Ive been recently hammered with a high electricity bill, and decided to look into our houses appliances to detect which devices where to blame. This gave me a pretty detailed idea of how much electricity my PS4 uses. Below Im sharing my findings, the real cost of keeping your PS4 in standby mode, and what you can do about it.

To measure my PS4s electricity usage, I bought a tiny device called the Kill A Watt. Its a super easy to use device, in which I can plug any of my electric devices to check how much energy they use. I estimate that I will make back the money from that device within 6 months thanks to what I found and the savings Ill make. More expensive versions exist but I went with the best seller on Amazon.

Note: the following tests have been done with an original PS4 phat. Reportedly, the PS4 slim uses significantly less power, and so does the PS4 Pro used under the same conditions .

Heres what I found:

• In normal in menu use, the PS4 uses about 70 Watt
• In Game, the PS4 uses an average of 140 Watt
• When streaming a movie , my PS4 uses 90 Watt on average
• In standby mode, the PS4 uses a bit less than 10 Watt
• In standby mode with 2 controllers charging, the PS4 uses 11 Watt.

Thats for the PS4 itself. As a matter of comparison, Ive measured that my Android set top box uses about 10 Watt no matter what I do with it, my laptop uses about 70 Watt in activity, and my TV, a 2009 Plasma 40, uses an insane 240 Watt .

Tips To Reduce Power Draw & Increase Efficiency On The Switch

Now that we know the power consumption, we can simply use the average cost of electricity to work out the costs of running a Series X for an hour across the different modes.

The table below shows how much it costs to run an Xbox Series X for an hour in the US, Canada and the UK.

In the US, on average, it costs 2.7 cents per hour of gaming on the Xbox Series X. At maximum capacity, it costs over 4 cents per hour, while in standby mode it costs just close to of 1 cent.

On average, in Canada, it costs 3.2 cents per hour when gaming on the Series X. It costs closer to 5 cents per hour at max capacity and nearly ½ of 1 cent per hour on standby.

If you run your PS4 from your car battery while the engine is running then you will essentially be powering everything from your alternator and your car will become a mini generator. Your battery should be just fine.

If however, you want to use just the stored capacity in the battery, be aware that a car battery is a starter battery and not a deep-cycle battery. Heavily discharging it below 50% will shorten its lifespan considerably and youll only be able to do that about 10-20 times if youre lucky before your battery will die.
