The PS5s dimensions, weight, are substantial and confirm the fact that the PS5 is the biggest console in modern history.
The PS5 weighs in a 4.5kg and measures at 390mm x 104mm x 260mm. Meanwhile, the PS5 Digital Edition measures at 390mm x 92mm x 260mm, weighing in at 3.9kg. This is quite big when you compare it to the Xbox Series X size, which is just 301mm x 151mm x 151mm.
Ps5 Ssd: Can You Expand Ps5’s Storage Space With External Hard Drives
Firstly, if you already have an external USB hard drive, PS5 will support the use of this hardware. It’s worth noting, however, that you’ll only be able to play backwards compatible PS4 games off a traditional USB hard drive, as native PS5 software will need to be installed on the PlayStation 5’s SSD.
Fortunately, you’ll be able to purchase and install additional SSD cards called NVMe drives. You’ll need to ensure the one you purchase will work with your PS5, and it could be an expensive option, but it will at least retain the increased speed of the built-in drive. Sony has only confirmed that the PS5 will not natively play PS1, PS2 and PS3 games. That said, we wouldnt be surprised however if Sony merely relied on PS Now to play PS3, PS2 and PS1 titles in much the same way that it does now.

If You Want To Delete Everything On The External Hard Drive At Once
1. Once again, open the Settings app, select Storage, and then USB Extended Storage.
2. Click the three dots next to the Safely Remove from PS5 option.
3. Select Format as exFAT.
This will erase everything on the drive, and return it to factory default settings. This means that if you want to use it with your PS5 again, you’ll have to set it up from scratch.
This is also the method you’ll use if you want to totally unpair the external hard drive from your PS5 and use it with another device.
Requirement Specifications For Internal Ssd Expansion Cards
Sony has revealed the specifications that hard drives will need to match or exceed in order to work with the PlayStation 5. It’s important to note that the company is still hedging its bets. The official post states:
We cannot guarantee that all M.2 SSD devices meeting the described specifications will work with your console exact same performance .
With that in mind, here are the base requirements that your NVMe M.2 PCIe Gen 4 SSD will require:
- Be an M.2 drive type of either 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110.
- So that’s a length of 30, 42, 60, 80 or 110mm.
- And a width of 22mm .
In regard to the heatsink, Sony pointed out that you should not attach an additional heatsink to an NVMe M.2 SSD that already has one. Plus, it had the following to say:
Using an M.2 SSD with your PS5 console requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure, such as a heatsink. You can attach one to your M.2 SSD yourself, either in a single-sided format, or double-sided format.

This is where we hit the largest difference between Xbox Series X and PS5, so lets address the elephant in the room: yes, Xboxs GPU can push more teraflops . In this regard, it has the victory in numbers, which is what a lot of people will point to.

Is There Room To Expand Ps5 Storage
Like the PS4’s support of external hard drives, the PS5 also has room to expand. The PS5 is going in a different direction by offering a slot for a NVMe drive, which will need to fit the M.2 drive slot offered and also meet Sony’s speed requirements for validation. But it means we get room to expand without having to pay for a specific brand name add-on.
How much can we expand? Sony hasn’t confirmed what limitations it’ll place on the speed and size of the additional drive.

…Sony’s solution is proprietary, 825GB is most optimal match for the 12-channel interface and there are other advantages too. In short, Sony had more freedom to adapt its design: ‘We can look at the available NAND flash parts and construct something with optimal price performance. Someone constructing an M.2 drive presumably does not have that freedom, it would be difficult to market and sell if it were not one of those standard sizes,’ Mark Cerny says.

Here’s how to boost your PS5 storage with an M.2 SSD. It only took me a few minutes to get 4TB of extra storage space.
There’s a new option for expanding your PlayStation 5 storage, and it’s really quick and easy to set up.
One of the biggest gripes about the otherwise awesome PlayStation 5 has been that modern games are so big, there’s just not enough storage to hold more than a handful at a time. The last clocks in at around 185 gigabytes, and even fresh out of the box, a PS5 only has about 700GB of free space.
The first answer was to hook up an external solid-state drive — a cheap and easy solution, with a catch. You can play PS4 games directly from the external SSD, but not PS5 games. You can only store them there to free up space on the internal drive.

But now a new beta version of the PS5 OS allows you to use the previously hibernating extra M.2 hard drive slot inside the PS5. You can join the beta program with a few clicks right here. It just took me a few minutes to get signed up.

First, you need to open up the PS5 case, undo some screws and properly install the drive. Second, the most popular compatible drives are mostly sold out and hard to find right now.
