PS5 How much space do I have left on my console #PS5 #SpaceLeft #Size #Help

The PS5s dimensions, weight, are substantial and confirm the fact that the PS5 is the biggest console in modern history.

The PS5 weighs in a 4.5kg and measures at 390mm x 104mm x 260mm. Meanwhile, the PS5 Digital Edition measures at 390mm x 92mm x 260mm, weighing in at 3.9kg. This is quite big when you compare it to the Xbox Series X size, which is just 301mm x 151mm x 151mm.

Ps5 Ssd: Can You Expand Ps5’s Storage Space With External Hard Drives

Firstly, if you already have an external USB hard drive, PS5 will support the use of this hardware. It’s worth noting, however, that you’ll only be able to play backwards compatible PS4 games off a traditional USB hard drive, as native PS5 software will need to be installed on the PlayStation 5’s SSD.

Fortunately, you’ll be able to purchase and install additional SSD cards called NVMe drives. You’ll need to ensure the one you purchase will work with your PS5, and it could be an expensive option, but it will at least retain the increased speed of the built-in drive. Is 825 Gb Enough For Ps5

So you want to get a PS5 or are curious about getting one but wondering if 825GB is enough for the PS5? I dont blame you, thats not even 1TB of memory and games files are just getting bigger and bigger. Dont worry, I will answer any questions you have.

PS5 825GB space is enough for roughly 10 PS5 games as the reserves around 20% of its internal SSD for the PS5 operation system leaving around 664GB for usable storage, Demon Souls takes 66GB of space. To get more space you must purchase an expandable PS5 SSDfor $115 for 500GB of space.

A lot of people think next-generation games files will be smaller because of better optimization methods, but look at Spidermans ultimate edition on PS5 taking up 1/7 of all the PS5 memory! I will explain why the PS5 has 825GB and how many games the PS5 can hold.

PS5 SSD: How Much Storage Space Does It Have?

Sony has only confirmed that the PS5 will not natively play PS1, PS2 and PS3 games. That said, we wouldnt be surprised however if Sony merely relied on PS Now to play PS3, PS2 and PS1 titles in much the same way that it does now.

For much more information on this, please check out our PS1, PS2 and PS3 compatibility article where we go into much more detail about how those older games might still end up on PS5.

If You Want To Delete Everything On The External Hard Drive At Once

1. Once again, open the Settings app, select Storage, and then USB Extended Storage.

2. Click the three dots next to the Safely Remove from PS5 option.

3. Select Format as exFAT.

This will erase everything on the drive, and return it to factory default settings. This means that if you want to use it with your PS5 again, you’ll have to set it up from scratch.

This is also the method you’ll use if you want to totally unpair the external hard drive from your PS5 and use it with another device.

Requirement Specifications For Internal Ssd Expansion Cards

Sony has revealed the specifications that hard drives will need to match or exceed in order to work with the PlayStation 5. It’s important to note that the company is still hedging its bets. The official post states:

We cannot guarantee that all M.2 SSD devices meeting the described specifications will work with your console exact same performance .

With that in mind, here are the base requirements that your NVMe M.2 PCIe Gen 4 SSD will require:

  • Be an M.2 drive type of either 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110.
  • So that’s a length of 30, 42, 60, 80 or 110mm.
  • And a width of 22mm .
  • Be PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD.
  • Having a read speed in excess of 5500MB/s isn’t required but is recommended.
  • Have a heatsink built in or be capable of having a heatsink added.
  • Be 250GB to 4TB in capacity.
  • Total size, including heatsink, can’t be more than 110mm x 25mm x 11.25mm .
  • Note: The heatsink cannot extend more than 8mm above the card, or more than 2.45mm below the card.
  • In regard to the heatsink, Sony pointed out that you should not attach an additional heatsink to an NVMe M.2 SSD that already has one. Plus, it had the following to say:

Using an M.2 SSD with your PS5 console requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure, such as a heatsink. You can attach one to your M.2 SSD yourself, either in a single-sided format, or double-sided format.

Why Does The Ps5 Have So Little Storage

Nearly a year on from release, and it seems like the PS5 teething problems are starting to go away. There are more games out, more consoles available, and users are waiting for a PS5 SSD storage update. Until then, they have to make do with the 825 GB of hard drive storage currently installed in the console. As games are getting larger in size, space is running out faster so why does the PS5 have so little storage?

    Two: Gpu Graphics And Hardware

The PS5 will include totally new hardware.

    • 10.28 TFLOPS, 36 CUs at 2.23GHz with variable frequency
    • A custom RDNA 2 architecture
    • PS4 by comparison launched with 1.84 TFLOPS, 18 CUs at 800MHz.

This is where we hit the largest difference between Xbox Series X and PS5, so lets address the elephant in the room: yes, Xboxs GPU can push more teraflops . In this regard, it has the victory in numbers, which is what a lot of people will point to.

Remember, though, that teraflops are a single metric about a single part of the system. I say this often, but remember how games looked at the beginning of the generation, compared to how they look now. Its a friendly reminder that, ultimately, games will be the deciding factor.

In his presentation, Mark Cerny emphasized this, offering an example where we pit a 36 CU GPU at 1GHz against a 48 CU GPU running at 750MHz. Both are 4.6 teraflops, but his argument was that the experience would not be the same.

For the technical people reading this, heres how Mark Cerny broke it down:

Performance is noticeably different, because teraflops is defined as the computational capability of the vector ALU. Thats just one part of the GPU, there are a lot of other units and those other units all run faster when the GPU frequency is higher. At 33 per cent higher frequency, rasterisation goes 33 per cent faster, processing the command buffer goes that much faster, the L1 and L2 caches have that much higher bandwidth, and so on,

    Four: Ps5 Wifi / Network

PS5 will ship with Wi-Fi 6 802.11 AX standard which is a big deal! WiFi 6 is a huge improvement and changes the whole game basically. It will be a network beast! WiFi 6 has better latency as compared to WiFi 5 and for gaming that is critical. The bandwidth of 802.11g adds about 50ms of latency while the bandwidth of 802.11n adds about 10ms of latency 802.11ac adds about 5ms of latency. Dont know what WiFi6 is? The CompetitionXbox Live and PlayStation Network are on equal standing this generation. With PlayStation Plus at an all time high, Microsoft has been trying to keep up with their Games with Gold program, but the titles are rarely better in both quality and value to what you get on PS+.

How much storage does the PS5 have?

Your PlayStation VR headset will work just fine on PS5. Even better still, like some PS4 games, a selection of PSVR games will be tweaked to run at higher resolution and boast more detail than the PS4 and PS4 Pro was capable of. Games that run on PSVR through PS5 can expect to benefit from:

    • 90 FPS output instead of the 60 FPS output you get on PS4 and PS4 Pro. This results in a much smoother experience.
    • Faster loading via the PS5 SSD.
    • Improved levels of detail in the environment and on character models.
    • Additional graphical effects.
    • 4K resolution that is down sampled to 1080p for improved image quality.

Its a little different to access Microsoft Teams on PS5 because the consoles web browser technically isnt advertised by Sony, and requires a bit of work to get it working!

  • Head to User and Accounts in Settings of your console
  • Select Link With Other Devices
  • Choose Twitter
  • Youll then access the web browser, but youll need to first select the small Twitter logo in the top left corner to get to the Twitter UI.
  • Log in and then youll have full access to web browsing on PS5.
  • Once this is done, simply follow the previous steps above to access Microsoft Teams on PS5.
  • Is There Room To Expand Ps5 Storage

Like the PS4’s support of external hard drives, the PS5 also has room to expand. The PS5 is going in a different direction by offering a slot for a NVMe drive, which will need to fit the M.2 drive slot offered and also meet Sony’s speed requirements for validation. But it means we get room to expand without having to pay for a specific brand name add-on.

How much can we expand? Sony hasn’t confirmed what limitations it’ll place on the speed and size of the additional drive.

Why Does The Ps5 Have An 825gb Ssd Rather Than 1tb

Eurogamer has a good breakdown of exactly what’s going on here:

…Sony’s solution is proprietary, 825GB is most optimal match for the 12-channel interface and there are other advantages too. In short, Sony had more freedom to adapt its design: ‘We can look at the available NAND flash parts and construct something with optimal price performance. Someone constructing an M.2 drive presumably does not have that freedom, it would be difficult to market and sell if it were not one of those standard sizes,’ Mark Cerny says.

But why only 16GB? Well, theres an interesting story behind that to say the least.

Ps5 Games Take Up A Ton Of Space Here’s How To Boost Your Playstation Storage

Here’s how to boost your PS5 storage with an M.2 SSD. It only took me a few minutes to get 4TB of extra storage space.

There’s a new option for expanding your PlayStation 5 storage, and it’s really quick and easy to set up.

One of the biggest gripes about the otherwise awesome PlayStation 5 has been that modern games are so big, there’s just not enough storage to hold more than a handful at a time. The last clocks in at around 185 gigabytes, and even fresh out of the box, a PS5 only has about 700GB of free space.

The first answer was to hook up an external solid-state drive — a cheap and easy solution, with a catch. You can play PS4 games directly from the external SSD, but not PS5 games. You can only store them there to free up space on the internal drive.

    Looking for Black Friday deals?

But now a new beta version of the PS5 OS allows you to use the previously hibernating extra M.2 hard drive slot inside the PS5. You can join the beta program with a few clicks right here. It just took me a few minutes to get signed up.

There are a couple of problems to overcome before you can start downloading all your games onto the new M.2 drive. First, you need to open up the PS5 case, undo some screws and properly install the drive. Second, the most popular compatible drives are mostly sold out and hard to find right now. You can keep an eye on in-stock M.2 drives and prices here.

Here’s how I got the new drive installed in a matter of minutes.

Ways To Expand Your Ps5 Storage With More Space

There are 3 ways you can expand your storage space so you can have more games available on demand when playing your PS5. But only 1 of them really delivers what you want.

  • There is a PCIe expansion bay in the PlayStation 5 that you can fill with a compatible PCIe Gen 4 M.2 NVMe SSD card from late August 2021.
  • You can plug in an external SSD hard drive.
  • Or you can plug in a portable HDD storage solution.
  • I’ll go into more detail on these options further down, but here’s a quick snapshot of the performance differences. A note about read speeds: Internal storage solutions plug straight into the console, but external solutions go through a USB cable. Now, USB 3.0 is capped at 625MB/s, with the latest USB 3.1 which is available on PS5 capped at 1.25GB/s. Something to keep in mind.

    No Yes

If you look at our list of install sizes for PS5 games, it will be immediately obvious how claustrophobic that 667GB feels. Many next-gen games, in particular popular blockbusters, are well over the 100GB mark each. We need more PS5 storage space.

If you caught our PS5 review, you’ll know there is plenty to love about the console. However, while the internal NVMe SSD facilitates many of its most enjoyable features, it was too expensive for Sony to include enough space on it to last gamers very long. So, how can you upgrade?
