Leaks And Rumors Reveal Potential Price Points
We all saw the incredible reveal of the PS5 console and a bunch of games in June 2020, but what about the price? While we dont have a solid answer just yet, multiple sources have suggested what we also believe.
The first is a screenshot making the rounds of an Amazon listing, which suggests the PS5 standard will be 499 euros, and mostly like $499 USD. Take a look:

The screenshot has gone on to be discredited by Amazon, but the true source of the image has yet to be revealed. Even so, this same price point at $499 and $399 for the digital only version is something others are also sharing.
Namely is the Twitter account @IronManPS5 who recently rebranded as an Iron Man themed account. As part of an open letter expounding the nature of such accounts that leak information, they also snuck in a confirmation from their perspective that the new consoles will indeed be $399 and $499 for each version:

The person who wrote the note intentionally left out numbers because people would probably not read the whole thing. I did, and I found it to be poignant, even if Im part of the problem by taking away that price prediction they added in there.
Its something that both Sony and Microsoft will be watching each other over, to see who decides to announce first. In the meantime, we will continue to speculate until the details arise!
Spare Dualsense Controller: $69/59
Sonys DualSense controller is a rather special peripheral given its advanced haptics that can when implemented well deliver a more tactile and immersive gaming experience. . But you only get one DualSense controller in the PS5s box. While the controller is easily recharged via USB-C, it only lasts some four to six hours.
So you might want to have a spare controller handy for when your main one runs out of electrical juice mid-gaming session. Or if you have friends around and want to play some split-screen multiplayer when the coronavirus pandemic subsides. To do that you need to fork out an extra $69/£59, which isnt an unreasonable price for a pretty advanced controller. But a second DualSense means the cost of owning a PS5 creeps up yet again.

Ps5 Price: Compared To The Ps4
When the PS4 released in 2013, PlayStation held the price announcement until the Xbox One had taken the leap first. Once the Xbox One was set at $499 / £429 with a Kinect included in every package, Sony only had to cut the PlayStation Camera from its PS4 bundles to swoop in with a $100 cheaper price tag.
It’s for this competitive reason that Sony was likely holding off on its PS5 price reveal, waiting for Xbox to make the first move again or simply making sure Microsoft doesn’t return the favor in 2020.
So how does the PS5 price compare to that of its predecessors? The PS4 launched for $399 / £350 / AU$599, while the PS3 launched for an astonishing $599 / £425. It was always unlikely we’d see prices reach that high in the US again, though Sony is definitely pitching above the cost of the previous-gen console.
Tips For Buying The Ps5
Buying the PlayStation 5 has been a struggle since release, but retailers have been making a steady stream of consoles available. If you have a preferred store, you should look into setting stock alerts with their online tools.
Retailers with membership plans like Walmart, Best Buy, GameStop, , and the PlayStation Direct store sometimes offer subscribers email invitations, waitlist access, or restock alerts to purchase PS5 consoles when available. If you’re on the hunt for a PS5, you’ll have a better chance snagging one from the retailer of your choice if you sign up for their membership program.
Third-party stock-tracking websites like HotStock.io can tell you when a store last had the PlayStation 5 in stock and let you set alerts for multiple retailers. A reseller who made more than $40,000 reselling PS5 consoles in 2020 shared more specific tips on how to find the console online.
If you encounter issues while trying to check out with an online retailer, keep trying to refresh the product page to add the console and make sure the PS5 is available and in your cart. If possible, create an account with your preferred retailer and enter your payment and shipping information in advance to help the checkout process move quickly.

Remember The Ps5’s Backward Compatibility
As you probably know, the PS5 is backward-compatible with almost all PS4 games. This means that you can transfer your PS4 data to PS5 and enjoy the older titles, taking advantage of slightly faster load times.
However, this comes with some hurdles. The PS5’s SSD has a limited amount of storage spaceabout 667GB is usableso you don’t want to fill that up with PS4 games and run out of room for PS5 games. Lets say youve just got a PS5, then your main choice of exclusives are Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demons Souls, costing $49/£49 and $69/£69 respectively on the PlayStation Store.
As getting one game for the PS5 doesn’t really make sense, were going to assume youll want both to get yourself started on Sonys new console. That means youll need to part with $118/£118, which is a pretty hefty amount for two games, one of which is basically an expansion pack to a 2018 game as well as a being available on the PS4 and the other is a remake, albeit a grimly beautiful one, of a 2009 game. Fancy a third-party game, with next-gen graphics? Then you could opt for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which will still set you back $59/£59, though the game has been discounted for the holiday season. While you can wait for game sales, getting a suite of PS5 games to get started with isnt going to be cheap.

Michael Pachter Strikes Again
If youve been a long time reader here on PS5 Gamers, then you know we like to cover industry analyst Michael Pachters predictions as they are both relevant and interesting. Hes not always right, but he comes pretty close more often than not.
The latest news from him is a in June 2019 where he laid down some interesting predictions for Project Scarlett and PS5s price point:
The specs suggest $500 or so, but my bias is that Microsoft will announce $399 and Sony will follow suit.
I would love to see $399, but I find it hard to believe the new systems will go for that low. Its common knowledge that console manufacturers sell systems at a loss in the beginning. They reap the benefits later on when people buy accessories and games.
Even so, with the specs we are hearing about $399 would be a substantial loss. In Microsofts case, if the rumors are true about two consoles at launch , then we could have a base model for $399 and the enhanced for $499 or more, but nothing in the wind points to Sony have multiple consoles at launch.

The PS4 and PS4 Pro were renowned for their ability to kick up the system fans to obnoxious levels and output lots of heat, particularly on the earlier models, so those looking to pick up a PS5 will be relieved to hear that those problems have been eradicated.
We held our hand near the system during a long play session, and although the PlayStation 5 was clearly outputting hot air it was emitting far less than what the PS4 Pro would push out.
Very rarely in our testing did the fans reach an audibly loud level to the degree that the PS4 Pro did when running games like Horizon: Zero Dawn or God of War. However, that could simply be due to the fact that we haven’t seen any resource-heavy PS5 games yet. Sony has also promised that it plans to optimize the PS5’s fans using over-the-air updates, so the machine could get louder, or indeed quieter, when playing certain games later down the line.

Ps5 Bundles: What To Expect In The Future
We now have more of an idea about what the first PS5 bundles look like now stock is more regular. Currently, a lot of retailers still add piles of different PS5 games and accessories to bump up the price and deter scalpers from buying. This is useful on the one hand, but it does mean your initial investment to buy a PS5 is a lot more than it should be.
PS5 bundles do look a lot more varied nowadays, at least. Many bundles now come with recent releases and big PlayStation exclusives such as Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7. These are still full price, though. The only place we’ve seen a saving is at Argos in the UK, where you could save £20 off Horizon Forbidden West when bought alongside a PS5.
As the stock situation continues to improve and some killer titles get older, we may see more PS5 bundles with discounted extras such as games or accessories. Don’t expect to see these for a while yet, though the earliest we may see some is during this year’s Black Friday.
