How To Change Nat Type
You cant change NAT Type directly on PS4. Changing NAT Type requires altering some settings on your router. And these settings can be different depending on the make and model of the router you use. So you need to prepare a computer and the manual of your router before you begin.
The following are the detailed steps to change NAT Type:
1) On your computer, open a web browser, and then type in the address box the default gateway IP address . After that, press Enter on your keyboard.
2) Enter the username and password to access your router.
3) On your router settings, enable UPnP*.

4) There are two ways you can change your PS4 NAT Type. One is to put it to the DMZ, which can be a dangerous method. The other is to open up some forwarding ports. You can click one of the links to go to the method you want to choose.
a) To put your PS4 to the DMZ:

i. Find the DMZ setting on your router .
ii. Enable DMZ and enter the IP address of your PS4 youve just written down into the DMZ setting. Then save and apply your changes.

i. Go to the section on your router settings where you can forward ports.
ii. Add custom forwarding ports:

The biggest problem for most console gamers is NAT Type, which can restrict who you can play with online, leading to longer matchmaking sessions and making it more difficult to chat with friends in a group chat. If those problems sound familiar, its likely down to a Moderate or Strict NAT.
Thats the bad news, but the good news is that you can change your NAT type to Open on PS5 youll just have to dabble in the world of Port Forwarding to do so. Its a little complicated, but we talk you through the entire process right here.

What’s your internet plan? If it’s not already, please wire your PS4 to your gateway via Ethernet. Once the gateway is wired, please Reboot the Gateway and then run a NAT test on your console.
If your NAT’s not open after that, you may need to do some Port Forwarding. You will need to do some research to find out what ports need to be opened for your console.

I have Fiber, my PS4 isn’t showing up in the device list, and IP passthough is off.
What internet plan are you supposed to have though? Which device list are you referring to that it’s not showing up? IP Passthrough can be set up to bypass your firewall, but doing so will get rid of your security, so it’s not recommended unless you have a 3rd party router. And again, is your PS4 wired to the gateway via Ethernet? If it’s not, doing so is definitely recommended if you want an open NAT.

Next Gen Consoles Should Avoid Nat Issues
Thankfully, all these issues with NAT Types and connection issues should be a thing of the past once the next generation of gaming consoles has been fully phased in.
The upcoming PS5 and Xbox X consoles are set to be fully optimized for IPv6 connectivity instead of the older IPv4 protocol that current gen currently uses, and which is the source of so many of these NAT and connection issues.
The IPv6 protocol does not require the use of NAT, and so will not run into any NAT Type issues where gamers cant connect to lobbies or hear each other in parties because they are on different NAT Types.
Under IPv6, the new consoles should simply be able to connect to each other directly over the internet, with no NAT middleman protocol getting in the way and blocking connections. This should greatly reduce these connection problems between gamers.
Therefore, once you are on next gen, you shouldnt need to mess around with DMZ or other settings too much. These consoles should be optimized for the best possible connections right off the bat through IPv6.

Solution : Enabling Dmz Server
Since the problem is primarily related to connecting and discovering several devices on the internet, we tried using UPnP. If that doesnt work, we can try setting up a DMZ. DMZ is a logical or physical subnetwork that exposes a networks external-facing services to an untrusted network. This untrusted network is the internet. We will be using your PS4 as your DMZ host.
This will primarily help in correcting the network configurations on your router and aid in establishing good connections between consoles. There isnt that much of a security threat. Just carry on and see if this method works.
Tip: If you are using routers that have NAT Filtering option etc, you can also enable Open NAT Filtering.

What Is Nat And What Is Its Purpose
Network address translation is a method of remapping an IP address by modifying the information in a data packet’s header. Network packets are the packages of information that make up your traffic when it travels across a routing device.
NAT operates in the router and allows it to translate the private addresses of the entire network to a single public IP address. It turns the router into a mediator between your private network and the internet.
A NAT router could be compared to an office switchboard. Each department has its own number extension that is not visible to outsiders . Outgoing calls usually display the same public number . Like a secretary, the NAT can direct callers to specific callers to different departments using their ports while ensuring that those connections are legitimate.

Where Can I Find My Nat Type On Pc
If you want to find your NAT type on PC, you have to log into your routerâs settings. Your router has an IP address, which you need to type into your browser. It might look something like this: 192.168.0.1. After typing your login credentials, you will be able to access your routerâs settings and find your NAT type on PC.
Putting Your Ps4 To The Dmz:
- The first thing youll need to do is check your router manual to find your routers DMZ settings, that is if you dont already know where it is.
- Then enable DMZ and there should be a box for you to enter in the IP address you wrote down from the view connection status screen in your consoles settings. Make sure to save and apply settings before exiting out of your routers settings
- Check to see if your NAT type has now changed and if the connection has improved.

What Does Nat Type Failed Mean
PlayStations NAT Type error message
NAT Type failed is Sonys default message for any networking error on the PlayStation 4. Typically, this means that your router was unable to perform NAT on your PlayStations outgoing connection.
To fix the NAT Type failed error message you can manually setup your PlayStations connection to the internet.
To do this, get your PS4 IP address by navigating to Settings > Network > View Connection Status.
Then obtain your networks IP address, default gateway, subnet mask, and DNS Server. This can be found by searching cmd in a Windows device and selecting command prompt. Then type in ipconfig/all to view the necessary network information.
If you prefer macOS go to System Preferences > Network. Select your active connection and click Advanced. Locate the TCP/IP button and the required information should appear.
On your PS4, select Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection and choose Custom. Input all the information you collected in the previous steps.
You will now be assigned a NAT Type.
How To Check Your Nat Type
This will vary depending on the manufacturer of your gaming console. On PC, the NAT Type changes on a game-by-game basis.
- On Xbox, navigate to Profile & System> Settings> General> Network Settings and look under the Current Network Status heading.
- On PlayStation, go to Settings> Network> View Connection Status and look at the bottom of the page.
- On Nintendo Switch, select System Settings> Internet> Test Connection .

Manually Set Your Ps4 Network Connection
Step 1: You may need to manually configure your PS4 network settings. To start, open the Settings menu of your PS4 and choose the Network option. On the next menu, choose View Connection Status. From there, make note of your IP Address and write it down if you need to. Youll need it for the next steps.

Step 2: On a Windows desktop or laptop, hit the Windows logo key + R and type CMD into the dialog box that opens.
Step 3: Type ipconfig/all into the Command Prompt menu. This should bring up several pieces of connection information, but what you need to write down are the IP Address, default gateway, DNS server, and subnet mask.
Step 4: Go back to your PS4 and open Settings. From there, navigate to Network and Set Up Internet Connection.
Step 5: Choose the type of internet connection that youre using .
Step 6: Select Custom on the following menu. You will then be prompted to enter all of the network information you got from your PC.
Step 7: Choose Do Not Use as your Proxy Server setting. Youll then need to wait for your selections to process. Once that happens, be sure to choose the Test Internet Connection option to make sure that youre properly connected to the internet.
How To Find The Nat Type On Ps4
If you are experiencing connectivity issues and you suspect that it may be a NAT issue, youll need to find out what your PS4 NAT type is. Below are the easy steps on how to find the NAT Type in your PS4 console.
From there, you should be able to find the NAT type of your PS4 at the bottom of the page. Then you can already make the necessary changes on the NAT type you want to use for your console by accessing the router settings using a web browser.
IMPORTANT: Keep in mind that changing the NAT type in your router requires making router changes which may not be readily available in your particular situation. If you cant figure out how to change your NAT type, contact your Internet Service Provider for help.

Why We Dont Recommend Using Dmz To Change Your Nat Type
You may see other NAT Type troubleshooting guides suggest putting your games console into a DMZ to open your NAT Type. This is a reckless solution which will expose your gaming device to the entire internet.
A DMZ refers to a Demilitarized Zone Network. This is a miniature network which acts as a middle-man between a local private network, such as your home router and devices, and a wider public network like the internet.
DMZs are typically used by organizations that want customers to access their website but dont want to expose their private network to the internet. The company website would be put into a DMZ allowing the customers to publicly access it, while ensuring the organizations servers remain private.
Putting your PC or games console into a DMZ will provide you with an Open NAT as it will open all your ports.
However, it will keep all of your ports open 24/7, leaving you extremely vulnerable to malware attacks such as ransomware and botnets. Moreover, despite the separation from your local network, a device in a DMZ can still communicate with devices in your LAN and therefore infect them.
What If Using Dmz Doesnt Work
Looking through the various forums on this, we did find some people who claimed to have already tried the DMZ method and found this didnt manage to get them onto Open NAT.
This is slightly strange as using DMZ should in theory open your console fully up to the internet and automatically place it on Open NAT. It is a pretty universal setting and should work in the same way across all routers.
However, here are some things to try if you find that using DMZ doesnt seem to deliver NAT Type 1 for your PS4:
- Make sure you check your NAT Type in the PS4 consoles connection settings screen and not an in game NAT Type checker, since some games will not correctly show the current NAT Type you are on even if you change it.
- If you are in some kind of unique network environment that isnt quite the same as a private residence, like a university campus or a military barracks, their networks can sometimes be configured in a certain way that it is difficult to get off NAT Type 2 or 3. Speak to your network administrator to try and sort something out.
- Contact your ISP to make sure they are not using security settings that prevent you getting off NAT Type 2 or 3. Also ask for a new router if your current one is old.
- Make sure you save all settings and reboot your router and PS4 once you configure DMZ to allow the settings to take full effect.
