What Sony Got Right
For all the complaints about the PlayStation Classic and its failure to live up to hype, Sony got a few things right. The original gray box was faithfully miniaturized and the two included analog stick-free controllers felt identical to the original, right down to the sturdy cables. Sony cleverly solved how to play games that originally shipped on multiple discs by using the Open button to simulate changing the discs, making games like Final Fantasy VII playable, and save states let you resume playing games right where you left them.
But on the whole, mistakes were made.
Bleemsync Tool To Download Games To Playstation Classic
We are going to use the BleemSync tool to add games on PlayStation Classic. Though many other tools are available, BleemSync is the most trusted tool to hack the PlayStation Classic.
Go to the ModMyClassic website to get the BleemSync tool.
On the webpage, scroll down and click on the BleemSync 1.2.0.
Download the file on your PC. A ZIP file will be downloaded.
Extract the ZIP to your flash drive named SONY.
Now, follow the instructions provided in the ZIP file. You need to create a folder named Games. In the Games folder, you need to create folders with names 1,2,3, etc.. The number denotes the games that you need to download on your PlayStation Classic.
Each of the folders needs to have a GameData folder with Game.ini file, .cfg file, cover art image, .bin, and .cue files. You will get these instructions in the downloaded file. Do all the things mentioned in the file.
When you have done all these things, run the BleemSync file on your PC. This will create a folder named System on your flash drive.
When the folder is created, quit the BleemSync application and eject the flash drive from your PC.
Add Games To Playstation Classic
Now, you have downloaded the gaming files that you want to add to PlayStation Classic. This is the final step, after this, you can play all the games list on your PlayStation Classic Console.
Turn off your PlayStation Classic console and remove all the external wire connections.
Plug in the flash drive into the 2nd port and power your console.
You will see an orange LED on your console. When you see that, click the Power button to turn on your console.
Now, the LED will circle through orange, green, and red. Wait for a while.
After that, the orange LED will alone appear. This means that the games are installed on your console.
Now, restart your PlayStation Classic console. All the games you added in the flash drive will be available on your console.
Note: This is not a guaranteed process. If you cant play any games that you are added with your flash drive, try again. If you face the same issue, abort the process and play the pre-loaded games list.

The Fix: Project Eris
As always, the fix for bad products has come from the hacker community. Hackers cracked the console within a week of the mini consoles release. Project Eris, an all-in-one software solution, created and maintained by the Mod My Classic team, is now considered the best hack and unlocks the true power of the PlayStation Classic.
I followed the steps to install Project Eris on my PlayStation Classic using Mod My Classics instructions here the whole project took an hour, though that might be longer if youre less experienced with tinkering. The project requires two inexpensive components that are easy to find online.
This isnt a tutorial so I wont go over every step, but I do want to share some of my findings. For example, you need a USB to transfer the initial data file, but not all flash drives are equal because some dont have enough power throughput. After scouring Reddit, I found this SanDisk Cruzer Glide 2.0 USB Flash Drive works fine. I also got an OTG cable, which connects to the back of the console. An OTG cable frees up the frontside USB ports and can power a faster flash drive. I stuck with the cheap Cruzer Glide 2.0, which has not given me issues. Though not necessary, I recommend getting 8bitdos PlayStation Classic wireless adapter to connect wireless controllers like the PS4S DualShock 4 gamepad. The adapter pairs almost instantly and adds joystick functionality with no additional setup.

Playstation Classic Review: The Design
The PlayStation Classic is suitably tiny and compact, as you’d expect from a retro console replica. It’s 5.8 x 1.3 x 4.1 inches, which is roughly 50% smaller than the original PlayStation. Its size showcases the original console’s unique design that placed the CD centrally and built around it, making the uniqueness of having a CD-based games console its defining feature.
The large Power button is in the same place, and is used for the same function. The button’s size and placement is mirrored by a Disc Swap button. On the original PlayStation this opened the disc drive’s lid, here it swaps out virtual discs so there’s a nice continuation of thought. Likewise the old Reset button is used to jump out of a game and back to the main menu.
The stars are the small PlayStation Controllers. In an old interview with Next Generation magazine from 1997 the PlayStation designer, Ken Kutaragi said: “We probably spent as much time on the joypad’s development as we did on the body of the machine”. You can tell, the controller is flexible and intuitive, whether you’re laying down, lounging, or holding it in odd ways. Of course we’ve moved on the DualSense but the DNA of modern gamepad design is here, if smaller.

Upon booting up the PlayStation Classic, you’re thrust into the home screen, which is reminiscent of the CD player on the original console. There’s a carousel with all of the games, as well as a virtual memory card that you can access. That works as you’d expect, but you can also create a suspend point anywhere in a game by hitting the reset button. I only wish the system let me create multiple suspend points — whenever you make a new one, you blow the last one away.
The most important part is the games, and that’s a bit of a mixed bag. Some titles, like Final Fantasy VII, are recreated well. As soon as I started it up, I couldn’t help but play until I defeated the first boss and struck a blow against the Shinra Corporation. Jumping Flash, which I never spent much time with before, was pretty fun and an intriguing window into early 3D platforming. And Metal Gear Solid still looks and sounds impressive, especially after slogging through the first stage of Syphon Filter .
But the emulation isn’t always consistent. Ridge Racer Type 4 has significant frame-rate dips and jitteriness that makes playing the game a huge headache. That’s a particular shame, since the original was a graphical milestone for the 32-bit era. There’s no longer any sense of speed, and I had a hard time steering without analog controls. I’m surprised Namco’s developers haven’t complained that Sony’s slipshod development turned one of the highlights of the PlayStation into an unplayable mess.

The PlayStation Classic is, in all honesty, a bit of a letdown.
While Sony certainly hoped it would be as phenomenal as Nintendos mini NES and SNES consoles, it leaves a lot to be desired. Sure its beautifully made and incredibly dinky and cool but, short of a couple of choice cuts, it features a lacking games lineup and performance issues.
Thankfully, that doesnt have to be the case anymore. A set of willing tinkerers have blown the PlayStation Classic wide open, revealing a tasty menu to help tweak and boost game settings and unlock support for a plethora of PlayStation games you can add to the device yourself.
Basically, its the same situation as if you hacked your SNES Classic Mini to add more games to it.

Playstation Classic Review: In The Box
The unboxing of the PlayStation Classic is lovely. There’s care taken by Sony to make experiencing the PlayStation replica from out of the box a moment to remember the busy main packaging reveals a clean white inner box, and inside the PlayStation Classic is framed by a thick white card holder. It’s lovely.
Below this aren two USB PlayStation Controller replicas, a HDMI lead and a USB-C lead. Like many other retro gaming miniature consoles the PlayStation Classic comes without a USB-C power adapter, which is a little irritating .
Setting up to play is easy and swift, and as simple as plugging in the leads and pushing the big Power button. The classic PlayStation logo appears on a white screen just as I remember it way back in 1998 when I got my first PlayStation. You’re ready to play.
Playstation Classic Hack: How To Access The Debug Menu
To gain access to the PlayStation Classic debug menu youll need to get your hands on a compatible USB keyboard. Unfortunately, not all keyboards will work and it seems like a trial-and-error approach is the only way to find out. So far, the only confirmed keyboards that work are the Corsair K70 and K95.
However, once you do have a compatible keyboard, tap the ESC key while your PlayStation Classic is loading a game and youll open up a debug menu to tweak all manner of settings.
