Differences Ps4 Controller Vs Ps3 Controller

Before we bring any comparison, it is essential to note that the DualShock 4 controller is better than the PS3 controller.

It is miles ahead of the PS3 controller in almost every department. Also, the DualShock 4 is so much better to the extent that most gamers love it more than the Xbox One controller.

It is that good. Just take a look at PS4 and the PS3 controllers below side-by-side, and only by looking at them, you will identify how different they are.

The Analog Button: Ps4 Gives A Better Hold Than The Ps3 Controller

R3 On Ps3 Controller

The next difference between the PS4 and the PS3 controller that makes it better is the analog sticks. The DualShocks analog stick is concave. And has divots in the center while the rims are raised. It helps to keep your thumbs in place when you are using the analog button.

Besides, it differs from the DualShock3 controller, which has very uncomfortable concave analog nubs that let your thumb slide off the center quickly. It is something gamers have been struggling with for a while now. So, the PS4 controller has finally solved this problem.

Also, the PS4 controller analog buttons are spaced a bit wider apart, which makes the hold more comfortable, unlike the PS3 controller. These perks make the PS4 controller a better option than the PS3.

How To Connect Ps4 Controller To Ps3 Easily

If your PS3 controller is not working any more, you may just want to purchase a new controller rather than a new console. Your question now may be if PS4 controller is compatible with PS3 console, and how to connect a new controller to the previous console.

Sony had announced PS4 controller was compatible with PS3 console not long after PS4 was launched. But you had to connect with a USB cable. Now you can also connect wirelessly. In this article, Ill show you how to pair your PS4 controller to PS3 console wired and wirelessly.

NOTE

How Do You Connect A Ps4 Controller To A Ps3

Connecting a PlayStation 4 controller to a PlayStation 3 is as simple as connecting it with a wire.

This will provide you with full functionality for a majority of the PlayStation 3s expansive library of games.

However, its also possible to wirelessly connect the controller.

Youll still need a physical cable to wirelessly connect a DualShock 4 to a PlayStation 3, but once set up is complete, you can disconnect the cable and play wirelessly.

First, connect the controller to the console and power on both devices.

Next, open the settings menu and go to Accessory Settings.

Select Manage Bluetooth Devices and click Register New Device. Click on the Start Scanning option and immediately disconnect the DualShock 4 from the PlayStation 3.

Hold down the PS button near the controllers built-in speaker and the Share button at the same time.

When the light bar on the controller begins to flash, simply plug the controller back up.

Wireless Controller will appear on the screen.

Now you can use your DualShock 4 controller wirelessly with the PlayStation 3.

The entire process takes some trial-and-error and can become quite tedious when required every time you switch the controller from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 3.

How To Use A Ps4 Controller On Your Ps3

Even after so many years of use, I still love my Playstation 3. I cant imagine a life without it. As such, I get nervous thinking about the fact that native PS3 Controllers are no longer in production. What happens when my ever so slightly worn out two controllers give up? How will I play my favourite platform games?

Thankfully, Sony made it possible since software version 4.6 to use the newer Playstation 4 controllers on our Playstation 3 systems. Those are available in great numbers and colours, and from what I hear, they even have the same batteries inside as the PS3 controllers did.

Heres how to pair a PS4 controller on your PS3 console:

  • switch you the PS3 console using a regular PS3 controller
  • head over to Settings Accessory Settings
  • select Manage Bluetooth Devices
  • choose Register New Device
  • on your PS4 controller, press and hold the PS and Share buttons together for a couple of seconds, until the light starts to flash
  • select it from the list when your PS3 console finds the controller

And thats it! Now you can use your PS4 controller with your PS3 console. How cool is that? Now you can use a brand new controller on your old console, or play that multiplayer game youve never had a second controller for.

Connect Ps4 Controller To Ps3 Wirelessly

How to Use PS4 Controller on PS3 (WIRED AND WIRELESS)

If you prefer your controller to be wireless as explained above, then you can connect your PS4 controller to your console using Bluetooth.

Before you attempt to set this up, you need to make sure that the system software of your PS3 is up-to-date. As explained before if it is not recent, then it will not work. If your software version is not 4.6 or higher, it will not work.

To check your system software version, you go to Settings > System > Settings > System Software. It will show you the version of your software. However, the current version of Sony is 4.82, and it is better to get that, to avoid problems and be on the safe side.

After you are sure that your system is up to date, then you can follow the steps below to pair the controller to the console:

Step 1: Connect your DualShock 4 to the PS3 console using a USB cable. Make sure that you are using the right USB cable. Put the controller and the console on at the same time.

Step 2: Now, go to the XMB Menu. After that, select the Settings tab, after which you click on Accessory Settings and then choose Manage Bluetooth Devices.

Step 3: If you have not paired any Bluetooth device to your PS3 console in the past, you will see the message: The Bluetooth device has not been registered. Do you want to register it? In this situation, select Yes using the X button on your controller.

How Many Controllers Can You Connect To A Ps4

A great question regarding the PS4 is how many controllers can you connect to it? You may want to play a game with your friends or family but arent sure how many people can play at once.

Although some party games only require 1 controller to play, you might want to play some other couch co-op games like Borderlands 3 or Overcooked, so youll need some more controllers.

The PlayStation 4 can support up to 4 controllers connected at the same time. Providing a game supports couch co-op of up to 4 players, this means you and 3 other people can play a video game at once.

In fact, when you have connected 4 controllers to your PS4 youll see that each of them has a different colored LED to signify which player you are:

  • Blue Player 1
  • Green Player 3
  • Pink Player 4

Using Bluetoothctl To Connect Your Ps3 Controller

    1. With the PS3 Controller now ready to be connected with our Raspberry Pi we can move onto actually pairing it with the Raspberry Pi.

To do this, we need to first start up the Bluetooth configuration tool by running the following command on the Raspberry Pi.

    sudo bluetoothctl

    2. Now that we have launched up the Bluetooth configuration tool, we need to switch the agent on and set it to utilize the default-agent. Just type in the following two commands to do this.

    agent ondefault-agent

    3. Once we have enabled the agent we now want to actually scan for new Bluetooth devices, running the following command will tell the tool to start scanning.

    scan on

You will notice immediately that any Bluetooth device in the area will start showing up in your command line.

Ignore these for now as we only want to pay attention to the PS3 controller itself.

    4. Now is the time to press down the PlayStation button on the controller, so it begins to talk to the Raspberry Pi. You should soon start to see entries appear in the command line.

    5. Once you see something like the following appear, make sure you copy down the MAC address that is displayed. It is the sequence of text that is separated with : symbols.

     Device B8:27:EB:A4:59:08 B8-27-EB-A4-59-08 Device B8:27:EB:A4:59:08 Connected: no Device B8:27:EB:A4:59:08 B8-27-EB-A4-59-08

    6. Now that you have a MAC address available copy it down, in our example, this is B8:27:EB:A4:59:08.

    connect YOUR_MAC_ADDRESS
    trust YOUR_MAC_ADDRESS
    quit

Using Sixad To Connect Your Ps3 Controller

    1. Before we get started with compiling and setting up SIXAD on our Raspberry Pi, we must first install a few packages that we require.

The essential packages here are libusb-dev and libbluetooth-dev as they contain the code that we need to compile the sixad software.

Libusb-dev contains code that allows us to interact with USB devices that are plugged into the computer through code.

Libbluetooth-dev provides the code required to be able to interact with the operating systems Bluetooth stack. In sixads case this is used to detect when a PS3 device is connected to the Raspberry Pi.

sudo apt install git libbluetooth-dev checkinstall libusb-devsudo apt install joystick pkg-config

    2. Now that we have all the packages that we could need lets go ahead and clone the SIXAD repository from Retropie, the reason we use Retropies fork is that it has a few improvements and is tested on the Raspberry Pi.

Run the following two lines on your Raspberry Pi to clone the GIT repository.

    cd ~git clone https://github.com/RetroPie/sixad.git

    3. With the repository now cloned to our Raspberry Pi, we can now move onto actually compiling it. Compiling SIXAD is simple to do and just requires to run the following two commands.

The first command moves us into the folder, the second line runs the makefile and compiles the program.

    cd ~/sixadmake

    4. Now with the sixad software now compiled there are a couple more things to be done before we can use it.

    sudo mkdir -p /var/lib/sixad/profiles

Seeinglooking: Use Ps3 Controller On Ps4 Hack

Wireless seems to be the in-thing at the moment, and rightly so. Who wants loads of cables all over the place? Theyre just a tripping hazard!

Evidently Sony thought the same, so they made the PS4 controller wirelessly compatible with a PS3!

A few years ago a new update was sent out to improve the PS3s firmware. This so-called 4.60 update allowed for wireless connections between PS4 controllers and PS3 consoles! There was also a new update to the PS4 controller itself too the 1.72 update.

    A win for all!

Anyway, back to business. Heres how you connect your DualShock 4 wirelessly to a PS3:

Step 1: Plug in your PS4 controller to your PS3 using the USB cable and switch on your PS3

Step 2: Go to Accessory Settings and select this option

Step 3: Select Manage Bluetooth Devices

Step 4: Press Register a New Device

Step 5: Now the PS3 will start to scan for possible devices disconnect USB cable now

Step 6: As the PS3 scans for new devices hold down the PS and Share buttons on the PS4 controller

Step 7: When the light bar on the PS4 starts to flash the PS3 and PS4 controller have synced plug the USB cable back in

Step 8: Select Wireless Controller and unplug the USB cable. The process is complete

Okay, so the wireless route may seem a little bit more fiddly but in the end, youll get a wireless controller to play with! You really dont need to spend more than 10 minutes tops doing this too.

    sudo apt install libusb-dev

    3. With our required package now installed we can go ahead and download the sixpair code and make a folder for it.

    mkdir ~/sixpaircd ~/sixpairwget http://www.pabr.org/sixlinux/sixpair.c

    4. Now with the sixpair code downloaded to our Raspberry Pi, we need to compile it, to do this we can just run the following command.

This command will tell the GCC compiler to compile the code.

    gcc -o sixpair sixpair.c -lusb

    5. With Sixpair now compiled on our Raspberry Pi, we need to plug our PS3 Controller into the Raspberry Pi using the USB mini cable.

    6. Once the controller has been plugged in, we can run sixpair by running the command below.
