In Which Year Was The Original Playstation Released In Europe

Playstation Launch Games In The Uk & Europe

Unboxing the Original PlayStation: PlayStation 20th Anniversary

1995 was a big year for gamers, it marked the transition from 16-Bit consoles, to the new CD-based 32-Bit consoles and 3D gaming. The Sony PlayStation had been long hyped, especially with it originally launching in Japan the year before in December, but finally, on the 29th September 1995, the Sony PlayStation launched in the UK and the rest of Europe.

The PlayStation is now quite rightly, considered a classic which changed the course of gaming, but did things always look as though it would become the behemoth it ultimately did?

Now as we know, a console is only as good as the games it offers, the PlayStation in Europe offered 9 games at launch.

  • 3D Lemmings Psygnosis
  • Rapid Reload Sony Computer Entertainment
  • Ridge Racer Namco
  • Wipeout Psygnosis

There is one thing I have noticed looking back at these launch titles that becomes a recurring theme, especially with early PlayStation games. Its the FMV intro! Almost a hangover from when we started to see CD-based media introduced, the increased storage of CDs meant FMV video intros were an easy way to impress.

Youll see as we go along how most of these launch games went down this road too.

Anyhow, we already know at least a couple of these is classics, but how did the other launch titles fare up? Lets take a look.

Playstation 3 In Europe Will Play Fewer Old Games

By Lucas van Grinsven, European Technology Correspondent

AMSTERDAM – The European version of PlayStation 3 will play fewer PlayStation 2 video games when it launches on March 23 compared with models launched earlier in Japan and America, Sony Corp 6758.T said on Friday.

The backwards compatibility is not going to be as good as the U.S. and Japan models, a Sony spokesman said.

PlayStation 3 was first launched in Japan and North America in November and the model that will be introduced in Europe will be designed differently.

Software will take over some of the functionality that was originally taken care of by dedicated chips, which means far fewer PlayStation 2 games can be played on a European PS3 compared with the Japanese and American PS3 models which play 98 percent of old games.

Sony is managing expectations by saying now that the new console will play fewer of the old games, and thats a good thing, said analyst Alex Kwiatowski at British market research group Vertical Market Technologies.

Kwiatowski said gamers with a PS2 would have to hold onto their device to play their current collection.

The PS3s graphics and sound capabilities are much improved over the PS2.

Formation Of Sony Computer Entertainment

At Sony Music Entertainment, Kutaragi worked closely with Shigeo Maruyama, the CEO of Sony Music, and with Akira Sato to form Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. on November 16, 1993. A building block of SCEI was its initial partnership with Sony Music which helped SCEI attract creative talent to the company as well as assist SCEI in manufacturing, marketing and producing discs, something that Sony Music had been doing with Music Discs. The final two key members of SCEI were Terry Tokunaka, the President of SCEI from Sony’s headquarters, and Olaf Olafsson. Olafsson was CEO and president of New York-based Sony Interactive Entertainment which was the parent company for the 1994-founded Sony Computer Entertainment of America .

The PlayStation project, SCEI’s first official project, was finally given the green light by Sony executives in 1993 after a few years of development. Also in 1993, Phil Harrison, who later became President of SCE Worldwide Studios, was recruited into SCEI to attract developers and publishers to produce games for their new PlayStation platform.

Sony Playstation: The First 20 Years

20 years after the original PlayStation was concieved, we look at the timeline

Following on from this morning’s news that Phil Harrison, Sony’s Head of Worldwide Studios, is set to move on to pastures new later this month, TechRadar decided it would be timely to take a look back at 20 years of PlayStation – one of the most iconic gaming devices ever made.

Emerging one generation after the Sega Megadrive and Nintendos SNES, PlayStation took gaming to a new level of performance and convenience and the brand has established itself as the most powerful in the history of gaming.

Nearly 300 million PlayStation-branded consoles have been bought worldwide, the most successful model being the PS2 which has contributed over 120 million sales on its own. However, success didnt come easily. Heres TechRadar’s 20-year timeline that plots the history and the development of the Sony PlayStation story.

The PlayStation story

1988 In the year that the Olympic games were held in Seoul, South Korea, Sony was collaborating with Nintendo to develop a CD-ROM drive for the latters 16-bit Super Famicom , due for release in 1990. However, Nintendo and Sony fell out, with Ninty fearing that Sony might eventually become a threat as a gaming entity. So it decided to partner with Philips instead. Sony continued to work on what was to become the first PlayStation console, although the first model never made it onto the market.

A Quick Guide To The Sony Playstation 1 Video Game Console

The PlayStation 1 is Sonys original video game console that launched an iconic brand. Featuring hit games like Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil, and Metal Gear Solid, the original PlayStation was one of the first major consoles to begin pushing full 3D graphics in 1994. It was eventually discontinued in 2006, but you can find pre-owned PlayStations for sale on eBay.

Reasons to buy a used PlayStation 1 console

What are the main types of PlayStation 1 models?

Sony released two distinct types of PS1 consoles:

  • Original PlayStation hardware: The original PlayStation hardware can be identified by the larger and boxier design. The earlier version of this console came with a non-analog controller. Starting around 1997, Sony introduced the DualShock controller, which incorporated two analog stick and rumble technology. The original hardware has two controller ports for local multiplayer. If you want to expand the number of players, then you will need the four-player multitap peripheral.
  • PS One: The PS One is a smaller, lighter version of the original PlayStation hardware. First released in the summer of 2000, the console is fully compatible with the entire library of PlayStation 1 games, but peripheral compatibility is not guaranteed. The PS One comes with a DualShock standard out of the box. Like its predecessor, the PS One also has two controller ports.

Battle Arena Toshinden Sony Computer Entertainment

The PlayStations first fighting game, Battle Arena Toshinden arrived on launch day promising to be a Virtua Fighter beater, which had been wowing gamers on the Sega Saturn.

Battle Arena Toshinden is a 3D weapons-based fighting game, which has 8 main playable characters. Much like with Virtua Fighter, the 3D environment allows players to move around the fighting area, avoiding attacks using the shoulder buttons to rotate the level around.

The fighting mechanics are fairly primitive by todays standards, but given this new generation of games succeeded the likes of Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat, expectations were high, but unfortunately, Battle Arena Toshinden just lacks the fast-paced, combo approach mechanics that made its 2D predecessors so successful.

Battle Arena Toshinden along with Virtua Fighter, helped usher in the new realm of 3D fighters, which have now become a classic genre in itself, The game proved popular upon launch, but with the likes of Tekken that followed a couple of months later, it meant that Battle Arena Toshinden had already peaked.

Ive never been a huge 3D fighting game fan, but Battle Arena Toshinden would have ticked the box for a while on a new console, but its not aged particularly well.

Playstation 5 Price: Cheaper Digital Edition

PS1 to PS5 – The Evolution of PlayStation

There are two versions of the PlayStation 5: one with a disc drive and one without. It’s a strategy could well prove crucial for the next console generation it lets Sony keep at least one model more affordable while still offering a more fully-featured PS5.

Unlike the approach taken by Microsoft with the Xbox Series X and Series S, the full-fat, disc-playing PlayStation 5 and the more affordable, disc-less PlayStation 5 Digital Edition enjoy performance parity, with the optical drive the only difference between the two machines.

We predicted that the PS5 Digital Edition would dip below the magic £400 barrier, while the version with the disc drive might be more like £499 , and Sony has actually trumped our expectations in the UK at least.

Last year, the PS5 shed around 300g in weight. The updated version, which boasts a lighter heatsink, is available now in most parts of the world. If you want to check which version you have, the original PS5 serial model numbers are: CF1016A and CFI-1015B . The new PS5 numbers are: CFI-1116A and CFI-1100B .

In early 2022, rumours of a PS5 Pro began circulating online. A reliable video report by gaming analyst RedGamingTechsuggests that Sony is readying a more powerful version of the PS5 for a late 2023 or early-to-mid 2024 release. Let’s hope we can actually buy it.

Dawn Of The Home Console

In 1967, developers at Sanders Associates, Inc., led by Ralph Baer, invented a prototype multiplayer, multi-program video game system that could be played on a television. It was known as The Brown Box.

Baer, whos sometimes referred to as Father of Video Games, licensed his device to Magnavox, which sold the system to consumers as the Odyssey, the first video game home console, in 1972. Over the next few years, the primitive Odyssey console would commercially fizzle and die out.

Yet, one of the Odysseys 28 games was the inspiration for Ataris Pong, the first arcade video game, which the company released in 1972. In 1975, Atari released a home version of Pong, which was as successful as its arcade counterpart.

Magnavox, along with Sanders Associates, would eventually sue Atari for copyright infringement. Atari settled and became an Odyssey licensee over the next 20 years, Magnavox went on to win more than $100 million in copyright lawsuits related to the Odyssey and its video game patents.

In 1977, Atari released the Atari 2600 , a home console that featured joysticks and interchangeable game cartridges that played multi-colored games, effectively kicking off the second generation of the video game consoles.

The video game industry had a few notable milestones in the late 1970s and early 1980s, including:

The Last Playstation Us/europe Release

Looks like the time has come.First, I can confirm the release of Madden 2005 — I’ve seen it in my local Toys R Us. And it’s amazing how good the game looks despite the age of the hardware by now…..Next week FIFA 2005 by EA Sports comes out in both the US and Europe, a few days apart.I’ve checked numerous sites and can’t find ANY other games planned for release in either the US or Europe. There’s still some planned PSX releases in Japan, but they look like re-releases, part of Koei’s Classic Gaming series or the PS One Book series. Nothing new, and nothing going past the end of the year. So, after about nine years, the long run of the PlayStation is over with.

The Playstation Was Released 25 Years Ago Today

On December 3rd, 1994, Sony released the very first PlayStation console in Japan for 39,800 yen . Nine months later, the home console launched in North America and Europe, followed by an Australian release in November. That, my friends, means today is the twenty-fifth birthday of the beloved Sony child. Sort of scary how fast time goes, huh?

Releasing into the fifth-generation of video game consoles, PlayStation entered in the running to top rivals, Nintendo 64, and the Sega Saturn. However, despite the vast popularity of all three contenders, Sony managed to steal the show and poach millions of players worldwide with their groundbreaking technology. Nine years later, Sony would go on to ship over 100 million units and become the first-ever computer entertainment platform to reach such heights. But, were probably getting a little ahead of ourselves here. So, let us take a step back to Christmas 1994 and walk through Sonys breakthrough success one baby step at a time.

Congratulations, Sony. Heres to the next twenty-five years of otherworldly gaming.

PS3

Ten years if it makes it just past December !Hmm…who’s to say this isn’t a temporary lull? I doubt anybody’s going to release a PlayStation game to get swallowed up by the Christmas season, though as you say you should see SOMETHING on the charts.1994 to 2004…take it back from 1984 to 1994. I’d say the difference in game systems from ’94 to ’04 has been much smaller than that from ’84 to ’94.

Jumping Flash Sony Computer Entertainment

J umping Flash is definitely the quirkiest game that the PlayStation launched with, and unsurprisingly starts with another rendered FMV intro!

You play as a robot rabbit searching for jet pods around 3D levels. The game is played in a first-person mode which sees you hop around at great heights to collect items in order to progress to the next level.

There are numerous enemies to avoid and shoot, but the main focus of the game is for you to position and time your jumps correctly, collecting all the jet pods before you run out of time.

Its a simple premise, but one that is very fun to play and received a sequel the following year which proved just as popular.

It was originally conceived as a tech demo in early 1994 but further developed into a full game. Its simplicity and quirkiness are what make this game still shine over 25 years after its launch.

Playstation 4 Will Launch Nov 15 In Us Nov 29 In Europe

Sony will release PlayStation 4 on Nov. 15 in the United States and Canada and in Europe and Latin American countries beginning Nov. 29, it said today at the Gamescom expo in Cologne, Germany.

The European countries currently scheduled to get PS4 before 2013 is out include Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Sony did not specify which of these countries would get it first. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama and Peru will also get PlayStation 4 on Nov. 29.

Curiously, Sony did not announce a release date for PlayStation 4 in its home country of Japan. In fact, it said that the new console would be coming to 32 countries this year, and the 32 countries it then listed in its press release following the Gamescom briefing does not include Japan.

At E3 Expo in June, Sony said that the PlayStation 4 will cost $399, 399 euros or 349 British pounds.

Sony and Microsoft have now both unveiled their currently planned lists of launch titles for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, which are listed below.
