It has been officially confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will not support PlayStation 3 games natively. This means that any retail or digitally downloaded games from the Playstation Network will not be playable on the new console due to the x86 architecture.

In a roundtable with journalists after the PlayStation 4 reveal, Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Worldwide Studios, elaborated further on the question of backwards compatibility.

In the IGN article linked above states:

“In a roundtable conversation with journalists, President of Sonys Worldwide Studios noted that PS3 games of both the retail and downloadable variety will not be compatible with PlayStation 4, at least not natively. In other words, your PS3 discs wont work in the new console nor will the games you downloaded.

Theres a catch, though: emulation. The PlayStation 3 doesnt read PlayStation 2 discs , but it can play PS2 games via the PlayStation Store in an emulated environment. Yoshida concedes that this is possible for PlayStation 4 supporting legacy PlayStation consoles as well. Indeed, the Gaikai presentation during PlayStation 4s reveal touched on this everything, everywhere mentality. But for now, downloaded PS3 games wont work unless, somehow, some games work on emulation. And the easiest thing, technically, would be to make PSone games work on PS4 with emulation. But were not talking about our emulation plans as yet.

What Happens When You Insert A Ps3 Disc In A Ps4

Your PS4 will do almost nothing if you attempt to insert a PS3 disc in it. The reason for this is actually quite simple: The PS3 and PS4 have different system architectures, therefore its almost impossible for them to be compatible with one another.

There is no direct way to play PS3 games on a PS4, as the PS4 lacks the necessary hardware to do so. In addition, Sony felt it wasnt worth developing an emulator to handle the older titles. Simply put, physical PS3 media will not work on PS4.

When a game is developed for a platform, certain hardware and software requirements are kept in mind. Unlike the PS3, which used a specialized CPU ” rel=”nofollow”> Cell) and necessitated the understanding of new technologies and hardware, the PS4 was much simpler as it was based on the x86 architecture . This meant developers could immediately begin taking advantage of the system.

Since the PS3s architecture was so challenging, many programmers were unwilling to work on the console at first. To be clear, the PlayStation 3 was way ahead of its time and in many ways, a more powerful console than the Xbox 360. However, Microsoft had the upper hand due to the relative simplicity of developing games for their console.

Sony appears to have learned from their past mistakes by adopting the more popular x86 architecture in its newest consoles nevertheless, they did so at the expense of backwards compatibility, which they were well aware of.

Backwards Compatibility In Consoles

Any console worth its salt will support backwards compatibility. Any manufacturer who goes through the trouble of implementing backwards compatibility to their console is showing they care about the legacy of older video games. Microsoft is a good example you can play the vast majority of Xbox 360 games on the newer Xbox Series X/S. Mind you, the Xbox 360 is not one, but two generations older.

Sony, on the other hand, appears to have been overly ambitious and short-sighted in the past. While the PS4 is not directly backward compatiblewith older-gen consoles, this wasnt always the case. The PlayStation 2 was able to run PS1 games in the past, and there are certain PlayStation 3 models that are backwards compatible with the PS2 as well.

Sony has a somewhat ill-famed stance on backwards compatibility. Ever since the the release of PS4, the company has completely neglected it because its not lucrative enough for them. When asked about the potential of backwards compatibility back in 2015, the now-CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, JimRyan is famously quoted saying this in an interview:

When weve dabbled with backwards compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much. That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games, and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?

Playstation Now Playstation Plus

As previously stated, Sony was well aware of the disadvantages of not including backward compatibility into their consoles, which resulted in the development of the PlayStation Now cloud-gaming service. PlayStation Now has over 700 games to stream from the entire PlayStation library, including popular games from the PS3. Since its a streaming service, not all your favorites might be available on here.

The real issue is that PS Now no longer exists. Sony rebranded its subscription services last year where they merged PlayStation Now with PlayStationPlus, keeping only the formers function alive but not its name. Now, in order to enjoy PS3 game streaming, you need to purchase PlayStationPlusPremium, which includes a ton of other benefits outside of PS Now.

The games can be downloaded and played directly from the servers using a real PS3 console, and the footage will be streamed as a video to your console. You cant download the game to your own console, since that would require dedicated backwards compatibility hardware, which the PS4 does not have.

PlayStation Premium is available for $17.99 per month, $49.99 per quarter, or $119.99 per year.

Can The Ps4 Play Ps3 Games

The short answer is that no, the PlayStation 4 is not backward-compatible with PlayStation 3 games. Inserting a PS3 disc into the PS4 will not work. And you cannot download digital versions of PS3 games from the PlayStation Store onto your PlayStation 4. This is the case with all editions of the PS4, including the slim PS4 and PS4 Pro.

The reason for this, like most backward compatibility situations, is that the PS3 and PS4 have different system architectures. PlayStation 4 consoles don’t have the hardware of the PS3, so they can’t run the older games natively. And Sony decided it wasn’t worthwhile to build a software emulator to handle the older titles, leaving the PS4 only able to play PS4 games. The PS4 can’t play PS2 or original PlayStation discs, either.

Thankfully, there are other ways to play PS3 titles on your PS4, even without native backward compatibility.

How To Tell The Difference Between Ps3 Models

Each model of the PS3 was unique in its own way, which makes it easy to distinguish between them all. All you need to do is learn what to look for.

The original fat PS3 has a glossy metallic finish with PlayStation 3 printed across the top of the console, along with four USB ports on the front. The PS3 Slim has a matte finish, and PS3 is engraved on the top this time. The PS3 Super Slim has a sliding disc cover instead of a mechanical disc drive.

As the names imply, each model is also slimmer than its predecessor. The PS3 Slim and Super Slim arent backward compatible with PS2 games, so make sure you dont buy either of these if thats what you want. The only other option to make any PS3 backward compatible with PS2 games is to mod or jailbreak it, which can work but is also risky.

You can also buy remastered collections such as Spyro Reignited Trilogy, and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. Games like these two are available in a physical form so if you prefer to use discs, you can do so and put them in your PS4 console like a regular PS4 game. With new remastered games coming out regularly, it’s worth researching whether your old favorite is available this way.

Is Ps3 Ps2 And Ps1 Backward Compatibility Finally Happening

A new PlayStation patent suggests the PS5, and possibly the PS4, are finally getting PS3, PS2, and PS1 backward compatibility. Unlike the Xbox Series X — which plays many Xbox 360 and original Xbox games — the PS5 only plays PS4 games, and of course PS5 games as well. It isn’t backward compatible with PS3, PS2, or PS1 games. The unique architecture of the PS3 gives Sony an excuse when it comes to the third-generation PlayStation console, but it’s unclear why the PS2 and PS1 are excluded. That said, it sounds like much of this, if not all of this, may finally remedy itself.

A new patent from Sony Interactive Entertainment has surfaced online. And who’s behind the patent? Mark Cerny, the mastermind behind PlayStation hardware. And what is the patent for? Well, it’s titled “Backward Compatibility Through Use of Spoof Clock and Fine Grain Frequency.” In short, PlayStation is working on backward compatibility tech, presumably to unlock legacy PlayStation consoles on the PS5, and maybe the PS4.

There’s nothing about the patent that suggests it has anything to do with enabling backward compatibility support for PS3 games or PS2 games or PS1 games, but that’s of course where everyone’s mind immediately goes to.

New @cerny patent sure@sounds like hes nailed BC for older #PlayStation consoles
