Ps3 Games Appearing On Ps5 Is A Bug And Not Backwards Compatibility

By Md Armughanuddin

PlayStation fans are eagerly looking for more information about backward compatibility for PS3, PS2, and PS1 games, especially after recent rumors stating that Sony is working on a cloud-based subscription system.

While the PlayStation 5 made some significant breakthroughs with the hardware, fans were quite disappointed with one aspect of the console, and that is backward compatibility. Rumors had pretty much confirmed that we would be getting backward compatibility in the PS5, but it didnt turn out to be reality. However, recent developments made people believe that we might be seeing it soon enough.

Ps5 Backwards Compatibility With Ps3 Games Turns Out To Be Just A Bug

PS5 backwards compatibility only supports PS4 games as of the moment. That doesn’t count all of the PS3 and PS2 titles you can play on Sony’s new console via their streaming service, PS Now. But PlayStation 5 owners woke up surprised to see PS3 games on their consoles’ storefronts nonetheless.

Unfortunately, it was all a mere mistake. According to DualShockers, the PS3 games that recently appeared on the PlayStation Store’s PS5 storefront are caused by a bug.

A few popular titles from the seventh generation, like “Prince of Persia Sands of Time” and “Dead or Alive 5” allegedly appeared in the store. Players couldn’t buy the games at all, but they looked “believable” enough that it fueled wild speculations.

Twitter user Ryan Biniecki was quick to point out that while this may look promising, it’s a bug that’s actually affected Sony’s digital storefront multiple times before:

Before this spreads like wild fire, a few things to point out:- This visual bug has happened many times over the years.- It’s pulling the price from when PS Now let you pay to rent games individually. – Prince of Persia games used to be on PS Now, so no – they’re not new.

Ryan Biniecki

Originally, old games appearing on the store will have the PlayStation Now logo beside them. If you click on the title card, it will usually redirect you to a free trial page for PS Now, writes GamesRadar.

Sony has not commented on this news yet.

Why Is Backwards Compatibility Necessary

The cost of consoles, their games and peripherals is already high enough. You want to trust that if you invest your hard-earned money on a new console or platform, or even just a game itself, it wont be outdated in a few years. Backwards compatibility is vital since it ensures you wont have to throw out your old software or hardware to upgrade to a newer, more expensive device.

Backwards compatibility also helps to maintain the industrys antiques. Sure, titles can be remade or rebuilt, and emulators can be built to accommodate classic games, but nostalgia is lost in the process. Im not sure Id go out and buy a Tetris 2021 edition, but Id love to play the original from 1984.

Backwards Compatibility | PS5

No, unfortunately not. PS5 games are optimized specifically for the updated internal hardware of the PS5. So they wont be compatible with the PS4s internal hardware.

PS5 games will work seamlessly with the increased SSD speed, ray tracing, and 4K resolution that comes along with the PS5. All of that technological goodness means that the PS5 games will look great on the PS5 console, but just cant function with the hardware components of the PS4.

Ps3 Games Have Started Appearing On The Ps5 Store

Several last-gen games have been spotted, amid backwards compatibility reports

Jordan Middler

PlayStation 3 games have started appearing on the PlayStation 5s store, amidst suggestion that Sony could unveil further backwards compatibility support for the console.

When viewing a PS3 game on the PS5 store, the listing should direct the player towards the PlayStation Now version of the game, however, Dead Or Alive 5 displays a price, £7.99.

Other users on social media have reported seeing similar listings for PS3s Bejeweled and Prince of Persia games The Forgotten Sands and The Two Thrones, each with their own purchase prices.

At the time of publishing, users have been unable to purchase a PS3 game from the PS5 store. The listings could be in error but interestingly, Dead Or Alive 5 on the PS3 isnt available on PlayStation Now in Europe.

The listings have appeared following the discovery of a patent, filed by PS5 system architect titled, backward compatibility through the use of spoof clock and fine grain frequency control.

This has naturally led many to speculate that Sony has finally developed a solution for older titles and could soon expand PS5s backwards compatibility support.

It also arrives following a Bloomberg report from December, which claimed that an Xbox Game Pass competitor service is being prepared by PlayStation.

When did the PS3 become a retro console? 2018 thats when.

Sony closed off all services for the PS3 back in 2018, including the PS Store. That means that unless you have existing discs to slot into these consoles or downloaded games, then they dont do a right lot these days.

Services such as iPlayer and All4 here in the U.K no longer work, though access to YouTube still works at the time of writing.

Now, I know what youre thinking what about that epic Call of Duty multiplayer rematch you and your pen-pal never got around to having? Dont worry the Multiplayer servers are still open, though we dont know for how much longer.

Sky Go, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Youtube they were all there at the touch of a rechargeable controller button.

In other words, a lazy persons dream console!

I actually use my PS3 more for playing Blu-ray discs these days as opposed to games. When Sony announced that the console would be capable of playing 3D films as well as DVDs, my mind was well and truly blown.

Ok, so I never owned a 3DTV, but if I did happen to come across one, then my trusty PS3 was ready!

What Is Forward Compatibility

The capacity of existing hardware to operate software and peripherals intended for the following generation of technology is referred to as forward compatibility.

Because it permits Xbox Series X titles to operate on the Xbox One, the Xbox Series Xs Smart Delivery feature, for example, is technically forwards compatibility.

However, because forward compatibility is less of a moral concern for purchasers and a significant loss of cash for console and game manufacturers, you wont see much of it around. When it does occur, its more of a commercial for next-gen consoles, with the message Heres what youre losing out on.

New games are usually designed expressly for new consoles and platforms in order to persuade gamers to buy new consoles in order to play the games.

Playstation May Have Just Accidentally Confirmed Ps3 Backward Compatibility On Ps5

PlayStation — or, more specifically, PSN — may have just confirmed that PS3 backward compatibility is coming to the PS5. And of course, if PS3 backward compatibility is coming to the PS5, PS2 and PS1 backward compatibility may be coming as well. Earlier this week, we relayed word of an updated patent from PlayStation that suggested all of this. Now, there seems to be more evidence, and it again comes the way of PlayStation itself.

Over on Twitter, Jordan Middler relays word that the prices of Dead or Alive PS3 games are showing up on the PS5’s PlayStation Store. Normally, they don’t do this, and they shouldn’t do this, because they aren’t available to buy. Yet, they are. Now, this could be an error, but if it’s an error, it comes at an inopportune time for Sony given all the speculation about PS3, PS2, and PS1 backward compatibility on PS5 there is currently.

This is also occurring the same week that PlayStation has begun to alert UK retailers to pull PlayStation Now cards from shelves, which, according to a few reports, is to prepare the way of a new PlayStation subscription service codenamed Spartacus. How does this have anything to do with backward compatibility on PS5? Well, the current intel on the subscription service claims it will not only combine PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus, but allow subscribers to play PS3, PS2, and PS1 games via backward compatibility.

Backward Compatibility On Ps5

Filed back in November 2020 and only recently made public, the patent explains a “method and apparatus for awarding trophies.” Not just for any game, but specifically for “emulated” games. As seen on Reddit , many have taken this as a way for Sony to award trophies for backwards compatible games, from the PS1 all the way to the PS4. While it’s not specified what games are being emulated, it certainly hints that PlayStation gamers may finally get what they’ve been craving. If the patent is indeed hinting at the possibility of backward compatibility, it could mean Sony is taking its time in bringing the feature by adding trophies to the older titles. While trophies add a new layer of challenge to games, some Reddit members have written that it would be disappointing if PlayStation trophies were holding the anticipated feature back. While PS Now does offer a selection of titles from past generations, from Infamous to The Last of Us, it hasn’t nearly taken off as well due to lag and streaming issues. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass blows it out of the water. The PS Store does offer a handful of PS2 titles, like Jak and Daxter, but there are still thousands more out there. However, if you do crave playing some adored retro titles, there is a way to turn an Xbox Series X|S into a retro emulator.

How Much Does A Ps2 Backwards Compatible Ps3 Cost

PS2 Backwards Compatible PS3 consoles can cost anywhere between $41 and $520 depending on condition and whether they ship with any accessories.

Ive said it before and Ive said it again the original fat edition is still considered to be the best PS3 of the bunch.

Sure, it might swallow the occasional disc and be a bit temperamental, but these consoles still tend to go for the big bucks because they are backwards compatible.

Plus they were the first console to feature an HDMI port. That might not sound like a big deal right now, but it was practically futuristic back in the day!

Boxed, used consoles still tend to sell for around the $350 mark, even in 2021. Sealed consoles that have never seen the light of day can sell for $1,500 and upwards.

People really take this backwards compatability thing seriously!

Dead Or Alive 5 Isn’t Currently Available On Playstation Now

PS5 backward compatibility will support almost all of

Your PlayStation 5 might soon be able to run PlayStation 3 games at least, thats what several new PS3 title listings on the PS5 store could indicate.

PS3 game listings on the PS5 store typically feature a PS Now badge and redirect you to PlayStation Now. However, new PS3 title listings that include Dead Or Alive 5, Bejeweled 3 and Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands feature an accompanying price tag, indicating that the games are downloadable and playable directly on the current-gen console.

The listings could also be tied to Sonys rumoured Xbox Game Pass-like subscription service codenamed Spartacus.

Spartacus is rumoured to feature three tiers: the first will offer a standard PlayStation Plus subscription, the second reportedly gives access to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 titles and the third features a library of PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP games, game streaming and demos.

Looks like PS3 games are popping up on the PS5 Store

GameRiot

According to VGC, attempts to purchase and download the PS3 games were unsuccessful. Others suggest that the PS3 title listings are just a visual bug that has also occurred in the past thats pulling the price from when you could rent titles individually from PS Now.

Whats surprising is these PS3 games can be added directly to your wishlist. With this in mind, if the pricing is just a visual bug, the titles wouldnt typically save to your wishlist. Further, Dead Or Alive 5 isnt available on PlayStation Now.
