One of the cool things that a PlayStation 4 does is constantly record your gameplay, although it only saves it when asked. However, all of that recording places a strain on the console and if you never use that feature, it would make sense to turn it off, right?
Unfortunately, I come with bad news: Sony doesnt let you switch it off.
But, what you can do is reduce the recording activity, which may help. Let me explain.
Sony is rather vague around how the gameplay recording is performed, but my best theory is that long stretches of footage such as the default length of 15 minutes would need to be saved to hard disk, increasing wear on the disk drive. However, if you crimp the recording to the minimum of 30 seconds, its possible that short recording can be stored in memory, meaning the hard disk isnt taxed unnecessarily.
Here, then, is how to set the PlayStation 4 recorder to the minimum possible duration:

Make Sure You Stop Your Ps5 From Automatically Recording Trophies

One of the features thats not openly advertised, but happens automatically, is how your PS5 treats the collection of trophies. As per usual, youll get a notification on screen every time you earn any trophy. Thats pretty standard for all PlayStation consoles in the modern age, so no surprises there.
However, whats a little less ideal is the fact that the console is set to automatically record the last 15 seconds of gameplay along with a screenshot every single time. But even if Sony doesnt openly tell you about this before quietly eating up precious space on your NVMe drive, you can turn it off pretty easily.
To find the option, youll want to head to Settings, then Captures and Broadcasts. From there youll have three options: Captures, Broadcasts and Trophies.
Scroll down to Trophies and youll see these three options on the right hand side:
If youre having troubles reading those buttons, just note that a filled in white circle means the buttons enabled. Scroll down to Save Trophy Videos and hit the X button. The circle should then move to the left, and the third option in the menu will disappear entirely.
Plenty of time to catch that perfect moment, but this way youre the one deciding when to eat up that precious hard drive space.
Save Video Last 15 Minutes
You are not out of luck when something spectacular happens in a game, and you want to capture it, but before you click on the Share button to start a video. Your PS4 always captures the video, and it just doesnt save it unless you say so.
In the PS4 video cache, the past 15 minutes of your gameplay session have always been kept. So, if youve just had a challenging boss battle or just pulled a nice headshot off, you may still save the footage from the cache.
Heres the thing: Do not double-press the Share button if you want to save the previous 15 minutes of your gaming! From the time you press the button, a new video recording will commence. You will delete the cached video by starting a new recording.

Just hit the Share button once to enter the Share option to preserve the past 15 minutes of the gameplay film. Select Save Video Clip from there or click on the Square button.
You can save the film in the Capture Gallery, where you can relax or share it. You may also utilize the Share menu to share the video clip directly on social media. It will also be saved in the Capture Gallery and taken next to the social media interface.

Save The Last 15 Minutes Of Video
When something great happens in a game and you want to record it, but you didnt previously hit the button to start a video, you arent out of luck. Your PS4 is always recording video — it just doesnt save that video unless you tell it to. The last 15 minutes of your gameplay session is always saved in the PS4s video cache. So if you just got through a tough boss fight or pulled off a sweet headshot, you can still save the video from the cache.
Heres the thing: If you want to save the last 15 minutes of your gameplay, do not double-press the button! Thatll start a new video recording from the moment you push the button onward. Starting a new recording will delete the cached video.
Step 1: To save the last 15 minutes of gameplay footage, simply press the button once to access the Share menu.
Step 2: From there, select Save Video Clip, or hit the Square button. That will save the video to the Capture Gallery, where you can mess with it at your leisure or share it.
Step 3: You can also use the menu to immediately share the video clip on social media, which will also save it to the Capture Gallery, but will take you to the social media interface next.
How To Set Up Recording
Several steps need to be followed to get excellent footage though. First, you have to adjust the video settings from the Sharing and Broadcast option in the background. It is vital to set things up first before recording so that you get the desired outcome.
If you hold the share button, you will be able to see a bunch of settings. Set these things up so that you do not have to do this each time for a different video. Also, it is essential to adjust the size of the video clip. You can set it up to 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, and so on.
You will want to choose the one you think is appropriate to share. You cannot manually adjust it after the recording. This is why it is so important that you do this before you try and record anything. Your saved data will then be stored in the Capture Gallery folder from where you can see these.
