Ps4 Vs Ps4 Pro Price Comparison

[4K HDR] Best HDR Games for PS4/Xbox One – The Digital Foundry Selection

The Pro offers some rather obvious advantages over the original PS4, but there are still several reasons to go for the latter, not least the lower price. Take a look at the list of current deals below, plucked from the web’s top retailers.

Of course, if you decide that a PS4 Pro is more up your alley, you’re in for a treat especially if you have a new 4K HDR television to play it on. You’ll find the lowest prices on Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro further down below.

Knowing the difference between the two PS4 models can make all the difference during sales, as you’ll be able to spot a genuine bargain much more easily.

Shadow Of The Tomb Raider

Rise of the Tomb Raider was a good-looking game on PS4 Pro but 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider is even better. In the final instalment of the reboot trilogy, PS4 Pro players have the choice to prioritize either resolution or framerate.

Choosing the former displays the game in eye-popping 4K at 30FPS while the latter drops the resolution to a 1080p so that you can get a smooth 60FPS. With its stunning set pieces and fast-moving action, there isn’t really a wrong choice when it comes to Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

How Does It Work

There are two parts of the HDR system: the TV and the source.

The first part, the TV, is actually the easier part. To be HDR-compatible, the TV should be able to produce more light than a normal TV in certain areas of the image. This is basically just like local dimming, but to an even greater extent.

Tied in with HDR is wide color gamut, or WCG. For years, TVs have been capable of a greater range of colors than what’s possible in Blu-ray or downloads/streaming. The problem is, you don’t really want the TV just creating those colors willy-nilly. It’s best left to the director to decide how they want the colors of their movie or TV show to look, not a TV whose color expanding process might have been designed in a few days 6,000 miles from Hollywood. More on this in a moment.

Of course, making TVs brighter and more colorful costs money, and some HDR TVs will deliver better picture quality than others. Just because a TV is HDR-compatible doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to outperform non-HDR TVs. The only thing the HDR label really means is that the TV will be able to display HDR movies and TV shows. It has nothing to do with how well it can show those images.

The content is the hard part. To truly look good, an HDR TV needs HDR content. Fortunately, the amount of HDR content is growing fast. The major 4K streaming services like Netflix and both have HDR content. As do many others.

Make Sure The Picture Looks Great

The difference between HDR and Standard on PS4 Pro ...

After youve set your HDR system up, you might have to troubleshoot the occasional performance issue that presents itself during gameplay. An example of such a problem could be a fuzzy or pixelated resolution.

Unfortunately, not all TVs are suited for HDR, even if it claims to be. A TV needs to be able to achieve high-contrast ratios and expanded color to display HDR properly. Suppose you experience lousy picture quality on your TV despite troubleshooting and adjusting your settings to their highest standard output quality. In that case, you will know that your TV doesnt have the required high contrast ratios or expanded color properties for HDR picture.

You can also try adjusting the picture quality in the games menu if released after firmware 4.0. If that doesnt help either, we suggest you disable HDR and play in standard mode. Choosing SDR mode should drastically improve the picture quality, and if it does, we recommend it as a go-to default option. Why Does Hdr Look Washed Out On Ps4

Enabling HDR can increase screen glare if there is too much natural light in the room. Try raising the screen brightness, and make the room darker if possible.

To calibrate the HDR settings on your PS4, go to Settings> Sound and Screen> Video Output Settings > Adjust HDR.

  • How do I turn off HDR on a PS4?

What About Cables And Connectors

You won’t need new cables for HDR… probably. Even if you do need new cables, they’re very inexpensive. Current High-Speed HDMI cables can carry HDR. Your source device and the TV must be both be HDR-compatible, regardless of what cables you use. If you use a receiver, that too must be HDR-compatible, to be able to pass the signals from the source to the TV.

If you’ve bought your gear in the last few years, it’s probably HDR-compatible. If you’re not sure, put the model number into with “HDR” after it and see what comes up.

The next generation of HDMI connection is called 2.1, and it adds a number of new features, including some improvements to how HDR is handled. It’s something to keep in mind for your next purchase, but it doesn’t make your current gear obsolete and will largely be backward compatible .

When Will Hdr Be Available

It’s available right now and has been for some time. In fact, if you’ve bought a new TV over the past few years there’s a good chance it’s a 4K TV with HDR built-in and is one of the UHD Alliance-certified TVs.

But how can you use it to watch HDR content? Well, if you own an Ultra HD Blu-ray player, are a member of either Amazon Prime, Netflix, Apple TV+ or Disney+ or just watch the occasional video on YouTube.

Those major streaming providers have also both pledged to bring the technology to new series going forward.

HDR has also been included as standard in the Ultra HD Blu-ray format. The amount of discs available, not to mention the number of players, is currently slim, but as more and more films get released in the format HDR is set to hit the mainstream very soon indeed.

If you’re streaming, you’ll need a broadband connection of at least 25Mbits to watch streamed HDR, although Netflix uses something called adaptive streaming that gives the advanced screen tech priority over resolution in the case of insufficient bandwidth.

Sky Q HDR was announced by Sky, along with Spotify integration and a lot more 4K UHD content, near the start of 2018. After some wait, all of those features have now arrived yes, including an upgraded Sky Q box for HDR.

Tweak Your Tv Settings

Next, you’ll want to double-check your TV’s picture settings, as they may not be ready for the PS5’s capabilities out of the box. In particular, many HDR TVs have a setting called “HDMI Deep Color,” “HDMI Enhanced,” or something similar, that you may need to turn on for HDR to work properly.

You’ll often find this in your TV’s Input Settings, but check your TV’s manual to see where exactly it is on your model.

Other TVs may have different settings that need to be tweakedsome owners of TCL TVs, for example, found they needed to set the PS4 Pro’s input to HDMI 2.0 Mode for things to work properly, and the PS5 may have similar quirks on some TV models.

I would also recommendthough this is completely optionalputting your TV in the Movie, Cinema, or Calibrated picture mode for best results. You may have to do this after starting an HDR game, as some TVs use different presets for SDR and HDR modes.

The Standard and Vivid modes that come with most TVs don’t use accurate colors, and thus won’t look as true-to-life in your games. Cinema mode may not look as punchy in comparison, but it’s actually the most accurate setting out of the box. Just give yourself time to get used to how it looks.

    Finding The Right Content

Finally, youll need to have the right content to play or watch.

There is a long list of HDR-enabled video games on the PS4, and more are being released all the time. Plus, there is a plethora of HDR video content you can access on Netflix, , and .

Heres a quick selection of some HDR-ready PS4 recommendations:

Ps4 Vs Ps4 Pro Optical Drive

    • Both systems have Blu-ray drives
    • Neither are capable of 4K Blu-ray playback

This is a particularly sore spot for Sony’s latest system. Despite initial speculation to the contrary, the PS4 Pro does not include an Ultra HD Blu-ray player it can play Full HD 1080p Blu-ray discs just the same as the original PS4.

Sony’s decision to omit a Ultra-HD Blu-ray drive from the system is puzzling, considering that Blu-ray support was one of the major boons of the PS3. Now, Sony might be saving that for another console down the road… but considering that Microsoft’s Xbox One S already has the high-end disc drive, it would’ve benefitted Sony to launch the Pro with one as well.

    Ps4 Vs Ps4 Pro Appearance

    • PS4 Pro is bigger, but not by much
    • Sleeker finish on top of the Pro console

As far as physical looks go, the most obvious difference between the original PS4 and the PS4 Pro is the addition of an extra layer on top of the console.

While the original PS4 has two layers separated by a gap for the disc drive and two USB ports, the PS4 Pro has three layers.

Thankfully this hasn’t lead to too much of an increase in its dimensions. The original PS4 measures 275.1 x 305.1 x 53.1 mm, while the Pro measures 295 x 327 x 55 mm. That means it’s slightly bigger, it’s 2 cm deeper and 2 cm wider, but interestingly it’s more or less the same height.

It’s also half a kilogram heavier, or just over a pound, though that shouldn’t bother you too much unless you’re lugging it from one room to the next.

    Ps4 Vs Ps4 Pro Connections

PS4 Pro (How To Fix HDR On Your TV Not Supported) 60FPS
    • PS4 Pro has an extra USB port
    • PS4 Pro also has an optical audio port
    • Original PS4 uses HDMI 1.4, Pro uses HDMI 2.0a

In terms of rear connectors, the PS4 Pro is nearly identical to the standard PS4, aside from the addition of an extra USB 3.0 port which should be pretty useful if you’re planning on hooking up a PlayStation VR, since the headset takes up a USB port when it’s plugged in.

An extra USB port is an excellent inclusion, since the PSVR brings back the Move Controllers which each need a USB port to charge. If you’re planning a jump into virtual reality, then the PS4 Pro might be the way to go.

Unlike the slimmer PS4 currently on sale, the PS4 Pro does include an optical audio output on its rear, just like the original launch PS4 from 2013.

The final difference between the ports on the back of the console is the HDMI port. While the standard PS4 has an HDMI 1.4 port, the PS4 Pro has an HDMI 2.0 port to allow it to output at 4K resolutions .

It’s important to note that you don’t need to upgrade your HDMI cable to take advantage of 4K, despite what Sony is claiming on its official FAQ. Any HDMI cable that can handle 1080p can do 4K just fine.

Hdr Standards Another Cause For Confusion

All HDR screens are able to display what’s called HDR10, which has the same specification as the UHD Premium standard. It’s compulsory on all Ultra HD Blu-rays, plus it appears on HDR dramas streamed by Netflix and Amazon.

But there’s another reason to be careful about which brand of HDR screen you buy and it’s all down to the fact that there are several varieties of HDR being used by content creators.

Dolby has an HDR10 rival called Dolby Vision, which has increased color depth and “up to” 10,000 nits peak brightness . It also offers a feature known as ‘dynamic tone mapping’ which adjusts the brightness and contrast of scenes depending on how bright or dark they need to be. This dynamic mastering process is all done when the film is being edited, which means all you need to do is sit back and enjoy the fruits of someone else’s hard labor.

Only screens and players equipped with Dolby Vision decoding will be able to show Dolby Vision’s ‘improved’ version of HDR. All of LG’s OLED sets support it, as does Sony’s flagship A1E OLED .

But Dolby Vision isn’t the only player in the field of advanced HDR.

There’s Advanced HDR by Technicolor, a nascent HDR format from the people who brought you colored cartoons Hybrid Log Gamma, which is the standard designed to work with broadcast television and finally, HDR10+, a new standard that builds some of the benefits of Dolby Vision into an open-standard akin to HDR10.
