PlayStation Now, Sonys cloud-based subscription service that streams PS2, PS3, and PS4 titles, faces massive changes and a possible merger with PlayStation plus subscription. These changes have been rumored for months now, suggesting a new subscription service that will replace PlayStation Now the PlayStation Spartacus. This new project should challenge Microsofts Xbox Game Pass subscription, which is currently the best gaming subscription service offered by a major console gaming platform.

According to ComicBook, PlayStation Now is being replaced by Spartacus , which supposedly combines Now and PlayStation Plus subscriptions into a single subscription service. The news was sparked by many reports by PS Now subscribers that have revealed that their subscription is showing up as another PS Plus subscription. Of course, this could be an error, but considering just how widespread the issue is, it could indicate that Spartacus rumors are coming true.

Thats really the big question, isnt it? Lets say your favorite games are already on PlayStation Now and youre ready to play. How is the experience?

In short: it depends. If you have solid home internet accessSony recommends 5Mbps at leastthats consistent and doesnt bog down when everyone in the house is using it, then in theory you should have a fairly good experience with PlayStation Now.

That said, Im not sure I agree with 5Mbps.

Lets use my home internet for example. I have AT& T U-Verse and the fastest speed they offer here is 50Mbps. Normally, that would be fine, but its summer and the kids are out of school, which means theyre watching entirely too much YouTube. So guess what I have to do every time I want to stream something on PlayStation Now? Tell them all to stop watching YouTube. Otherwise, they hog all the bandwidth and the experience is absolutely terrible. One night I had to replay the same part of Red Dead Redemption five times because the connection kept crapping out on me. It was infuriating, and there was no clear reason as to why it was happeningI was the only person streaming and had the PS4 set as the , which shouldve given it the most bandwidth.

Alas, it was awful, and I ultimate ended up turning it off lest I break the DualShock 4. Those things arent cheap.

Gamers in the United Kingdom will no longer have the option to buy a subscription to PlayStation Now at U.K. retailers. By Friday, January 21, retailers in the country will have to pull PS Now cards from their shelves. This is according to messaging that is going out to stores like Game this week.

Heres how the message from Game leadership reads:

Stores have until the close of day Wednesday 19, January to remove all POS and ESD cards from all customer-facing areas and update their digital bays in line with this weeks upcoming commercial update .

PlayStation Now is Sonys cloud-streaming and game-subscription service. It hosts hundreds of games, but it currently stands apart from Sonys other gaming subscription, PlayStation Plus.

But a recent report out of Bloomberg claims that Sony has plans to merge PS Now into PS Plus. The idea would be to make everything PS Plus while offering different tiers. The move to end PS Now subscription cards is potentially a step on the path to that eventual merging.

Playstation Plus Vs Playstation Now Pricing

Both PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now follow the same pricing model.

If you pay monthly for either PS Plus or PS Now, itll cost you $9.99. If you pay every three months, youll pay $24.99, or about $8.33 per month. Or, you can pay $59.99 annually, which comes out to roughly $5 a month.

Paying annually is the best way to go, whether you subscribe to PS Plus, PS Now, or both. It works out to be half the price of paying per month, which is really a steal for both services.

Since the pricing is the same, it comes down to which subscription service has more value for the price.

$10 Per Month Or $60 Per Year

To compete with Xbox Live Gold, Sony created PS Plus in 2010 for the PlayStation 3. The subscription allowed for online multiplayer, discounts in the PSN Store, cloud saves and monthly extra games. Initially, PS Plus free games included PS3 and PSP titles. Eventually, it included Sony’s other devices such as the PS Vita, PS4 and most recently, the PS5. Extra games included with the subscription are only available while a PS Plus subscription is active. Stop paying, and you lose access to those games.

There’s an extra bonus for PS5 owners. PS Plus subscribers who have managed to get a PS5 also have access to the PS Plus Collection, a library that includes some of the best PS4 games, such as God of War, Bloodborne and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

PS Plus is still needed for most online multiplayer, but it’s not required for free-to-play online games such as Fortnite, Call of Duty Warzone and Apex Legends. Microsoft recently moved free-to-play games like Fortnite out from behind the Xbox Live Gold paywall as well.

Even if you aren’t interested in online multiplayer, It’s still a subscription that can pay for itself multiple times over with the monthly bonus games. In 2021 alone, PS Plus subscribers received Control, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Battlefield V and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
