Now that the PS5 and Xbox Series X are here, it’s clear that the new gaming systems have capabilities that demand more from TVs. From new connectivity standards to extremely high resolutions, even the best 4K TVs for gaming might come up short when you bring home one of the latest gaming consoles.
Support for 4K gaming is already significant, and itâll be a growing consideration for manufacturers. Back in 2020, Sony launched its first “Ready-for-PS5” TVs for gaming, and that range has continued to grow. Budget TV brand TCL also announced it was launching the first TV with THX-certified game mode in the same year, and that’s still a TV we recommend today, the TCL 6-Series Roku TV .
If you’re in the market for a TV to go with one of the newest consoles, there are three key features you’ll want to take into account: connectivity, frame rates and resolution.
Resolution: Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X will eventually be able to handle much higher resolutions, with the promise of games playable at 8K Ultra HD or 7680 Ã 4320 pixels in a future update. While we don’t recommend jumping to 8K just yet â and neither console offers 8K support at this time â there’s a case to be made for gamers who want to embrace the new higher resolution experience.
Frame rates: Both consoles offer 4K gaming at 120 Hz, doubling or even quadrupling the current frame rates you can get and producing smooth, judder-free gameplay as a result.

What Is Allm Or Game Mode
Game mode turns off most of the image-enhancing features of the TV, reducing input lag. We’ll discuss input lag below, but the specific feature to look for is called either Auto Low Latency Mode or Auto Game Mode. Different manufacturers call it one or the other, but the basic idea is the same. Sensing a signal from the console, the TV switches on game mode automatically. This means you don’t need to find your TV’s remote to enable game mode. Not a huge deal, but convenient. All the TVs listed above have, or will have, one or the other.
What To Look Forward To
We plan to test the Samsung QN90B, the new version of our current runner-up. This 4K TV features most of the companys advanced technologies, and its available in 43- to 98-inch sizes for a slightly more reasonable price than the companys premium 4K TV, the QN95B .

General Qualities That Translate Well For Gaming
Those specific gaming features are all well and good, but focusing on specs alone really isn’t wise: your new TV also needs a broad range of core skills. For example, it needs to have the punch and vibrancy to do justice to brighter, flashier games such as Astro’s Playroom, but also a natural balance that doesn’t oversaturate tonally subtler blockbusters such as Elden Ring.
Black depth is important for delivering drama, too, but you want to be able to see plenty of detail in shadows, so avoid a TV with a reputation for crushing dark detail and be sure to tweak the brightness/gamma setting for your game â most titles have a specific option for this.
HDR is a must, of course, as the PS4, PS5, Xbox One X, One S, Series S and Series X all output HDR, and you might want to look for one that supports Dolby Vision gaming as well as standard HDR10 if you’re an Xbox Series X owner. More obviously, it would be a mistake not to get a 4K screen, even if you don’t yet have a 4K console. The good news is that it’s now pretty hard to buy a TV that doesn’t have 4K and at least HDR10.
Sony Bravia X90j ‘perfect For Playstation 5’ Tv
The next TV on our list comes directly from Sony â the Bravia X90J. This model is one of several TVs launched by Sony in 2021 that fall under its “Perfect for PlayStation 5” campaign, designed specifically for use with the console.
It comes with HDR10, a very nice and low 8.5ms input lag, is available in a number of sizes, and offers 120fps support thanks to its two HDMI 2.1 ports . The downside compared to the more expensive choices above is that this TV has an LED screen, rather than the fancier OLED or QLED screens which offer a higher quality picture.
The X90J is the cheapest of the “Perfect for PlayStation 5” range, but with the likes of LG offering fantastic systems at more affordable prices than Sony’s most extravagant sets, we’d recommend sticking to this lower end of the scale if you’re after a Sony TV.

The Reality About 8k Gaming On The Ps5
Keep in mind that consoles are limited by both their size and price.
Yes. Its true. The PlayStation 5 is the largest PlayStation to date. Its much larger than its closest competition, the Xbox Series X. This has allowed Sony to outfit the PlayStation 5 with an effective cooling solution. However, this still doesnt make up for the mere fact that high-end graphics cards, many of which cost significantly more than a single PlayStation 5, struggle to display games at 8K resolution at reasonable refresh rates.
Even if it is true that Sony takes a loss for every PS5 unit sold Sony spends more money manufacturing the PlayStation 5 than how much they sell it for, but they make up for this loss with money from subscriptions and first-party titles, among others and the games are traditionally better optimized for consoles, the fact remains that consoles often use its highest resolution supported as a marketing tool.
What this means is that, while the PlayStation 5 might have the hardware for gaming at 8K resolution, it wont be a priority for developers and it shouldnt be a priority for gamers.
Sony might have done a lot of wonderful things over the years, but theyre not miracle workers.
At best, the Sony PlayStation 5 is a well-optimized mid-range gaming PC.

4K 120Hz: The PS5 is able to play certain games at 4K resolution at 120 frames per second, which makes things super-clear and responsive. In order to actually see this on your TV, though, your TV needs two things: it has to have a 4K screen capable of refreshing at 120Hz , and it has to have an HDMI 2.1 connector, because it’s too much data for older versions of HDMI to handle. VRR : This technology enables the PS5 to tell the TV when it should refresh and show a new frame, instead the refresh happening at set regular intervals. This means that games can vary their framerate slightly with their being any weird graphical glitches from the fact that they’re out of sync with the TV â which means games can be more flexible with including fancier graphics, or can run at higher framerates than usual. The BX looks stunning, especially when on a stand and the signature LG controller is a joy to use. Blacks are not quite as deep as the more expensive C1, and the menu can be a little jumpy sometimes as the processor is different to the flagship model in that range, but these are just minor gripes in what is surely one of the best value, and most underrated, TVs out there.

Straight out of the box, Sony’s PlayStation 5 comes with an HDMI 2.1 port at the back of the console and a matching cable.
Now, it’s important to note that you will be limited by your TV’s capabilities. If your TV doesn’t support 4K resolutions, for example, you won’t be able to play PS5 games in 4K, at any frame rate likely making do with HD. You’ll need an 8K TV for 8K gameplay, too, but there aren’t really any 8K PS5 games in sight , so that’s a problem for another day.
HDMI 2.1 cables still work in HDMI 2.0 ports, though, so you will be able to plug your PS5 in to a regular HDMI port and get a picture onscreen just not at its max capabilities.
Since the PS5 doesn’t support 1440p, the resolution of many gaming monitors and projectors, it seems likely that the graphics would instead default to 1080p, which means the PS5 won’t benefit massively from a 1440p resolution monitor or screen.
