Playstation 3’s Cell Processor
When it was released, PS3 was the most powerful videogame system ever designed. The heart of the PS3 is the Cell Processor. The PS3’s Cell is essentially seven microprocessors on one chip, allowing it to perform several operations at once. In order to provide the sharpest graphics of any game system, Sony turned to Nvidia to build its graphics card.
The Cell Processor, for all its sophistication, had its pluses and minuses. It was designed to support complex programming and, at the same time, to resist hacking. Unfortunately, the complexity of the system made it so different from typical CPU’s that developers became frustrated and, eventually, stopped trying to create PS3 games.
The game developers’ frustration is not terribly surprising, given the extraordinary details of the processor’s design. According to the HowStuffWorks website:
The “Processing Element” of the Cell is a 3.2-GHz PowerPC core equipped with 512 KB of L2 cache. The PowerPC core is a type of microprocessor similar to the one you would find running the Apple G5.
It’s a powerful processor on its own and could easily run a computer by itself but in the Cell, the PowerPC core is not the sole processor. Instead, it’s more of a managing processor. It delegates processing to the eight other processors on the chip, the Synergistic Processing Elements.
Why Was The Ps3 So Bad
The loading times and install times on the PlayStation 3 were hard to sit through. Growing pains were inevitable as the video game industry started to become an online platform as well, but the PS3 was incredibly slow for gamers used to popping a disc into their PS1 or PS2 and immediately starting up a game.
Is Ps3 Still Worth Buying
All-in-all, the PS3 was, and still, is a great console. If you have 50 to 70 bucks to spare and want to play great video games without investing a lot of money, the PS3 is a good option especially since owning a PS3 is the only way to play most PS3 games. Its not a risky investment, just go for it and have fun.

The launch software was also displayed, with WipeOut and Namco’s Tekken and Ridge Racer drawing the most praise. Sony also announced the unit would not be bundled with Ridge Racer, as was previously assumed.
Overall, Sony made a very formidable showing at E3. They had already proven themselves in Japan and were close on Sega’s heels. Over the course of the next year they would overtake Sega and conquer Japan as their own. Now they were poised to do the same in America.
History Of Playstation 3
The PlayStation 3 launched on November 11, 2006 in Japan and November 17, 2006 in North America. It was by far the most expensive console by Sony, releasing with a $499 price tag for the 20GB model and $599 for the 60GB model due to the new Blu-ray format. The system was highly criticized early on for its high price tag, Sixaxis controller and poorly developed multi-platform games.
The unique Cell architecture was a large hurdle for developers in the beginning, but over time they were able to unlock the full potential of the console. Despite its hardships early on, the PS3 would eventually become one of the highest selling consoles of the seventh generation, selling 87.4 million units.
The PS3 was Sonys first real attempt at online capabilities too. Even though the PS2 technically had online support through a Network Adaptor, the release of the PS3 took things a step further with things like the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home, and eventual PlayStation Plus subscription service.
PlayStation Home was fun while it lasted, allowing players to meet in virtual spaces using their own custom avatar. It was launched as an open beta in December of 2008, and eventually closed down in March of 2013. Each user was given a personal studio that users could furnish with free, paid, or won items. Users could explore Homes virtual spaces, from The Hub to various districts like Action District, Sportswalk, Pier Park, and Shopping Centre.

Was The Playstation 3 A Success
Yes. A colossal success. In its 11 year lifespan, the PlayStation 3 has sold an estimated 85 million units. throughout its life in direct competition with the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 ran a very close race. It would appear that the Xbox 360 might just pip the PS3 to the post in regards to unit figures, the PS3 was still considered by many to be the superior console.
We are not going to re-ignite the console wars here. A retrospective will probably adjudge both consoles to be as good as each other but in different ways. The 360 has arguably better exclusives, whereas the PS3 had the additional memory performance of blu-ray disks.

So will 2008 be the breakout year for the PS3? Probably not. The changing tastes of the market are not on Sonys side, and a twitchy economy doesnt help the company’s chances, either. Plus, one month of besting the Xbox 360 in a month where none of the systems sold more than 300,000 units doesn’t necessarily signal a turnaround.
Colin Sebastian, an analyst with Lazard Capital Markets, sees January as an aberration due to short Xbox 360 supplies following their successful holiday season.
“The added cost of Blu-ray to the PS3 hurt it. Consumers didn’t see it as a compelling value, says Sebastian.

Ps3 Launch Titles Ridge Racer 7
Riiiiidge Raaa oh stop. Anyway, while it was good to see Ridge Racer at the launch of every PlayStation console , it soon became apparent that the game had lost much of the series mojo.
Sure, while having native 1080p visuals thundering along at 60 frames per second was good and all, Ridge Racer 7s handling simply didnt feel as good as it used to and the soundtrack was pretty much garbage too. A shame.

If you thought that having two NBA titles at the launch of PS3 was one too many you would be right. Its just a shame nobody thought to tell Sony.
Launching alongside the far superior NBA 2K7, NBA 07 from Sony Computer Entertainment San Diego simply wasnt up to snuff, with arguably worse presentation and less satisfying gameplay. However, NBA 07 does have the shared honor of being one of the few launch titles to display in full 1080p resolution.
