The Sony PlayStation 5 release date was November 12, 2020, in the US and a few other select markets. It arrived just a week later in several other major markets such as the UK.
The PS5 price is set at $499 for the regular edition or $399 for the Digital Edition. While the former is the same as the Xbox Series X, the all-digital Series S is actually cheaper than the PS5 Digital by $100. The PS5 Digital is more powerful than the Xbox Series S, but it is worth noting that the barrier of entry for next-gen gaming is cheaper if you opt for Microsofts ecosystem.

PS5 pre-orders launched September 17, though there were very limited quantities out of the gate. The new console sold out everywhere shortly after launch, with new stock coming in very irregularly. Game consoles represent huge investments for consumers. Between the games, the accessories, and the subscriptions, its no wonder people get angry when we bring up the concept of yet another console. Boy oh boy, though, do people get angry! If you try to bring up the subject on forums like Reddit, expect to get sufficiently ripped a new one, as it were.
People are protective of their investments, which results in kind of a hostile and hush-hush environment for people like us who dare to dream. Whats interesting though is the double standard that exists in the world of technology. Bear with me for a moment here, lets consider something:
- A new iPhone or Samsung Galaxy phone comes out each year and people rush to buy it, no questions asked.
- A new console is hinted at, but wont be out for several years, and people lose their minds
Whats the deal? I get that these two examples cater to different types of consumers, but seriously? The level of acceptance versus the level of hostility is just insane. Heres the problem though: technology outpaces consoles insanely fast. Anyone who is a PC gamer will know, just when you think you have the greatest rig, a new GPU or CPU comes out and suddenly youre obsolete again.
If games took the form of apps and streamed to your television from cloud servers, then Sony would have no need to release new consoles. Instead they would sell the games through these streaming boxes and possibly offer a subscription like PlayStation Now as well.

Ultimate Fishing Simulator 2
The game everyone has been waiting for, Ultimate Fishing Simulator 2, will release on PlayStation 5 in 2021. The sequel, which is developed by Polish studio MasterCode, promises a number of improvements over the original such as better graphics, a third-person camera, and “dynamic water and fish AI.”

In Android Authoritys PS5 review, our reviewer Sarah Chaney was overall very positive about the new console. Upgrades to the internals and the controller make it a worthy successor to the PS4. The ability to choose between enhanced graphics with real-time ray tracing and higher framerates offers an experience closer to PC than previous consoles.
Sarah also stressed how great the PS5 is for those new to console gaming. Combined with a subscription to PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus, youll instantly have a small collection of some of the best games from the PS4 era, along with a PS5 game each month.
Things are a bit more complicated for current PS4 owners. The improved loading times and upgraded graphics are great but not really worth the upgrade. Aside from Astros Playroom, which is more of a tech demo than a game, there were only three exclusive titles available at launch. Two of those were also available on the PS4.
But as of May 2022, weve seen plenty more high-profile exclusive titles hit the system. Horizon Forbidden West and Elden Ring made their debuts, and Ghostwire is fresh on shelves for gamers to test out.

Sony has made it official. The PlayStation 5 is coming at the end of 2020, according to a post Tuesday on the PlayStation Japan website. The US PlayStation site also has a post confirming the release window of the PS5 for the US as being the 2020 holiday season.
Details of the PS5 were made available to Wired Tuesday. The new PlayStation will not only be a graphical upgrade but also a rethinking of certain aspects of a console. Here’s everything we know so far about the PS5 so far.
For starters, Sony is changing how the PS5 will handle storage. The new solid-state drive will make games boot up faster and reduce loading times, and the console will handle games installation in a new way. Users will be able to install just a game’s multiplayer or single-player campaign instead of installing the whole game.
“Rather than treating games like a big block of data,” system architect Mark Cerny told Wired, “we’re allowing finer-grained access to the data.”
In April, Sony held a demo of the SSD in action in the new console versus the PlayStation 4 Pro. A video showed the PS5 booting a game several times faster and having no slowdown when traversing in an open-world game.
Sony also confirmed that PS5 dev kits are in the hands of developers who are working on new games for the console’s release.

At its launch in 2020, the PlayStation 5 wasn’t just one of the biggest game consoles ever made. It was also one of the heaviest, with the full-fledged Disc Drive Edition weighing in at 9.9 pounds and the Digital Edition hitting 8.6 lbs . Today, though, the eagle-eyed reporters at Press Start have noted the release of a new set of PS5 models that weigh about 13 percent less than their launch counterparts.
The new PS5 models first showed up on some Japanese retail sites over the weekend with a planned September 15 launch date. But Press Start reports that the new models are on shelves in many Australian retailers right now, including manuals listing their official weights at 8.6 lbs for the Disc Drive Edition and 7.5 lbs for the Digital Edition. No other changes are apparent in either the size of the system’s casing or the listed system specs, according to the report.

Lighter And More Expensive Than Ever
Those who follow the minutiae of game console hardware manufacturing might remember that this isn’t the first internal revision to the PS5 hardware. The CFI-11XX modelswhich also hit Australia first in August 2021 came in at 9.25 lbs and 7.9 lbs for their Disc and Digital Editions, respectively. That effectively splits the weight difference between the launch model and the newest model hitting Australia today.

Later testing showed last year’s weight reduction was due to a smaller, redesigned heat sink that seemed to improve the console’s heat dissipation. It’s not immediately clear what makes the newest models lighter, but supplier-sourced reports from earlier in the year suggest Sony was moving toward a new, 6 nm production process for the system’s AMD-made CPU. Besides potentially helping with manufacturing yields, that change could also have been part of an internal redesign that sports fewer weighty parts than in the past .
The Australian launch of the new PS5 model comes days after Sony raised the suggested retail price of the PS5 by up to 13 percent in many non-US regions, including Australia. Interestingly, the Japanese price increase is set to go into effect on September 15, the same day that Japanese retailers list for the launch of the new CFI-1200 model.
