Despite that pessimism, Sony forecast to sell at least 14.8 million consoles last financial year, after selling 7.8 million between the November launch and 31 March 2021. That pace will keep PS5 sales on track with the PS4, which has now sold more than 115.9 million units.
Its also worth noting that its been reported that there is less stock for the PS5 Digital Edition than the regular PS5, with the ratio apparently as high at 80:20 at some stores. That means you should be prepared to pay more for the standard console if you can afford it, as you might have a better chance of securing one.

Which Version Should You Buy
To date, Sony has released 2 different versions of the PlayStation 5: the standard model and an all-digital option that lacks an optical disc drive. The digital version is $150 cheaper but you won’t be able to play physical games or Blu-ray/DVD movies. Instead, all media needs to be streamed or downloaded through an Internet connection.
With the exception of the disc slot, the 2 versions are identical beneath the hood. If you rarely use physical media, then the all-digital version might be worth considering to save some money. However, if you like watching Blu-ray movies and don’t want to clutter your home entertainment unit with a DVD player, go for the standard edition.
In the second half of 2021, Sony released a revised version of both consoles. The chassis and components are identical with the exception of a smaller heatsink. This results in a physically lighter console at the expense of temperature. It reportedly runs hotter than the original version, although this shouldn’t affect the overall reliability. Gamestop Confirms New Playstation 5 In
GameStop has confirmed that it will have a PlayStation 5 restock in stores very soon. GameStop is the biggest gaming-focused retailer out there and although it has had some woes in recent years resulting in significant layoffs, its remaining presence ensures it will be the best place to get physical games. Not only does the retailer offer used games and allow customers to trade in games they no longer want, but it has been one of the only ways to get a PlayStation 5 in-store. Most retailers have opted to just shift all of its stock to online orders, largely because they fly off the shelf immediately, but GameStop has gotten larger stocks and has been able to justify selling them in-store.

During Black Friday 2021 there were discounts in the UK and the US on 12-month PlayStation Plus subscription codes, but unfortunately we won’t be seeing them again because, back in June, Sony announced the updating of the service to a three-tier system to rival Xbox’s Game Pass service.
What was PlayStation Plus is now PlayStation Plus Essential, which costs $/£6.99 a month and gives you two monthly downloadable games, online multiplayer access, cloud storage for saved games, and extra discounts. The other tiers are PlayStation Plus Extra, which is $/£10.99 a month and also gives you access to a catalogue of 400 downloadable first- and third-party PS4 and PS5 games, and there is PlayStation Plus Premium for $/£13.49 a month, giving you a further 340 additional games and PS3 games that are available to stream, with classic PS1, PS2 and PSP games that can be streamed or downloaded.
With these new tiers, the old PlayStation Plus subscription cards have stopped being produced by Sony and have stopped being sold by retailers, so we won’t be seeing them with any discounts this year. Instead, your best way to get a discounted PlayStation Plus membership this year is to purchase a PlayStation store gift card and use that balance to buy the service.

John Lewis & Partners restocks the console very infrequently, usually once every six to eight weeks. Restocks dont tend to last very long, but they do always seem to drop between 7am and 8am in the morning. Restocks have been lasting longer since the retailer started bundling the console with other accessories and games, bumping up the price.
The retailer only appears to get a couple of thousand consoles or less each time new stock comes in, so were not expecting anything big the next time theres a drop of the standalone console. When it happens, we recommend checking out via the app people have seen more success through this method.
Where To Buy Ps5 In The Us
For the US, we see consoles about once a month at major retailers but it still sells out in a matter of minutes at the likes of Amazon and Walmart – both of which just held a restock.
Still, here are the US stores that carry PS5 and Digital Edition consoles regularly. We update this list as soon as we get news of an upcoming restock with the announced time and date so you can be best prepared to bag a console.
PlayStation Direct: PS5 | PS5 Digital Edition
Sony’s official PlayStation Direct store is usually the first place to sell consoles during each restock cycle. In order to buy one, though, you need to register your details and receive an exclusive email invite to each restock event. These usually take place about once a month. A public sale often goes live if any consoles are still available after the invite phase.

Best Buy Ps5 Restock Date
Best Buy used to offer PS5 restocks on Friday afternoons, but the retailer has been known to restock on Thursdays and even on Mondays. In other words, it no longer follows a set pattern. A few things to keep in mind: Best Buy’s drops always occur during the afternoon hours and they always offer the consoles at list price: $499 for the PS5 and $399 for the PS5 Digital.
Playstation 5 Stock Shortage
Sony had planned on the production of 5 million PlayStation 5 games consoles by the end of March 2021. But as the popularity of gaming exploded during the pandemic, Sony doubled PlayStation production to meet 10 million units by the same date.
Sadly, it wasn’t enough. In May 2021, the company warned analysts that PlayStation 5 shortages would continue until 2022: “I dont think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldnt be able to catch up with demand,” said Hiroki Totoki, Sony’s Chief Financial Officer.
On 12th November 2021 the PS5’s first birthday Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Jim Ryan addressed historic demand for the PS5 in a PlayStation.Blog post. Ryan admitted that “inventory constraints remain a source of frustration for our customers” and said that Sony is “laser-focussed” on shipping as many console units as possible.
It all sounds very positive but the truth is, the company expects to produce one million fewer consoles 15 million, rather than 16 million in the financial year ending March 2022.
With the emergence of the Omicron COVID-19 variant, it seems that chip shortages are set to continue this year and possibly beyond.
In early 2022, Sony decided to keep manufacturing PS4 consoles. The company intends to make an extra one million PS4 machines to compensate for the lack of PS5 stock. It’s certainly one way to tackle the problem.
