Has Sony addressed why, in the PS4s final year, Sony hasnt slashed the price of the PS4 and released a PS4 Pro Slim to help push console sales? Wouldnt they be selling incredibly well at $199 and $299, respectively? The margins would still likely be damn good, especially in a PS4 Pro Slim.

One of the benefits of playing on PlayStation compared to, say, Nintendo Switch is that software prices fall fast. Or at least, they used to. Sonys exclusives hold their value to some extent, but it usually doesnt take more than a few months for the manufacturer to start chipping away at the prices in promotional events. So far, however, that hasnt proven true for PS5s first-party titles.
Launch titles like , Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and Demons Souls have yet to be discounted on the PS Store despite them now being six months old. Not even PS Plus subscribers have been able to save a few cents on these games in fact, price tracking websites like PSPrices display a flat line from launch through until today.
Contrast this to flagship PS4 exclusive The Last of Us: Part II, which has been available for longer but saw its price drop within three months. Its still generally holding its value, but has been available for as low as $29.99 recently which is half-price. Considering this is one of Sonys biggest and most important titles, youd expect it to have made similar adjustments to the likes of Demons Souls by now.

With games getting bigger and better all the time, its never been more important to have enough storage, particularly if youre planning on downloading more of your games. The Pro only comes with 1TB hard drive, which makes your decision for you, but the choice between a 500GB or 1TB Slim console is an important one.

The Ps4’s Expected Game Lifetime
The PlayStation 3 was released in 2006 and discontinued in 2016 in North America. It received cross-generation titles until the end of its life. For example, 2015’s Call of Duty: Black Ops III was the last Call of Duty title released for the system, though it was a watered-down version with no campaign mode.
This was similar for exclusive games. MLB The Show 16 was the final PS3 version of the yearly series published by Sony. Prior to this, 2014’s LittleBigPlanet 3 was the last major Sony-published title on the system.
The PS4 arrived in 2013, when the PS3 was seven years old. Since the PS5 launched in 2020, this puts the PS4 on the same timeline as the last generationâthough the existence of the PS4 Pro complicates this a bit.
Horizon Forbidden West will release on both PS5 and PS4 in February 2022 . In contrast, 2021’s Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, a major PlayStation exclusive, is PS5-only.
From these trends, we would expect the PS4 to receive cross-platform titles into 2023, at the latest. The PS4 Pro may receive a different treatment, but Sony hasn’t made a distinction between PS4 models for any releases since the PS5 came out.
Which Games Are Enhanced For Ps4 Pro
Alongside the PS4 Pros release a software update applicable to all PS4 consoles introduced whats known as Boost Mode. It ostensibly acts as a toggle that unlocks more power for select PS4 games increasing the processing speeds, shortening load times and offering smoother frame rates on a game-by-game basis. Certain PS4 games, however, have since been designed with PS4 Pro in mind and its these that can be played at true 4K. And while youll be hard-pressed actually to find a PS5 right now, the full-sized console will set you back $499.99. Sonys all-digital model is a bit more reasonable at $399.99, though just as hard to find.
If youre determined to save money, you can still get a great console with the PS4 Pro and a vast library of games to play. For $200 less, you could get a PS4 console with upgraded storage space and the same extensive library of games. Of course, Sonys older consoles are becoming just as hard to find as the PS5.
With that being said, a console is an investment. You dont pay hundreds of dollars for a new console to play one game on it and then be done. You buy a console to last you for years. So if you own a console for 3-5 years, or maybe even longer, will a $100-200 price difference matter that much to you?
If you can spend the extra money for a PS5, or you can wait until the PS5 drops in price in a year or two, thats the route I would go. The PS5 has such drastic hardware changes your games will run better, look better, and feel better on the PS5. To me, thats worth the extra $100-200 investment that, plus the PS5 exclusive games that will release after the PS4 and PS4 Pro are phased out.

If you want to play a lot of titles that are only available on PS4 and you don’t have another game console, then the PS4 is still a decent buy. The PS4 Pro is more future-proofed, but since its price is close to a PS5, we’d recommend sticking to a PS4 Slim if you do buy a PS4. Consider buying a second-hand model from a reputable seller to bring the cost down .
With a PS4, you can still enjoy cross-play with PS5 players in many games. Plus, you can take most of your games with you when you upgrade to a PS5 . But you’re mostly buying access to older titles with the PS4, as few new games will launch over the next year or two.
If you see yourself buying a PS5 in the next year, we’d recommend waiting for that instead. It doesn’t make much sense to spend $300 on a PS4 now, only to spend $500 on a PS5 shortly after. In the meantime, you might consider trying a few games using PS Now on your PC.
