The PS5 has been out for almost two years now, and while stock issues have plagued the console ever since it launched in 2020, restocks have improved massively over the past few months. However, there is still more drama ahead as PlayStation announced in late August that it would be hiking up the price of its consoles.
While were used to seeing consoles gradually fall in price as they age, the PlayStation 5 is doing the opposite. Just as the PS5 stock shortage woes were coming to an end in the UK, PlayStation announced that it would be increasing the price of both the PS5 disc and digital edition consoles by £30, and we have already seen this price change applied to bundles, too.
The price change came into effect on 25 August, with PlayStations CEO Jim Ryan blaming the price increase on the challenging economic environment. Were seeing high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends, impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries, he wrote in a blog post.
Based on these challenging economic conditions, has made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price of PlayStation 5 in select markets, Ryan added.

After much waiting, Sony announced the price and release date of the PS5 on 16th September 2020.
The company set the price of the PS5 Digital Edition at £360 / $400 / AU$599, and the PS5 disc edition at £450 / $490 / AU$749. That came as a pleasant surprise to those who’d expected the PS5 to be priced higher than the rival Xbox Series X.
In August 2022, Sony raised the price in certain territories, the UK and Australia among them. British buyers will now pay £479.99 for the standard PS5, and £389.99 for the PS5 Digital Edition without a Blu-ray disc drive. Australian gamers will now pay AU$799.95 and AU$649.95 respectively.
Prices are also going up in Europe, Japan, China, Mexico and Canada, but the US price remains unchanged.

The PlayStation 5 was released 22 months ago and yet, stores are still plagued with stock shortages. Heres why and when you can expect the gaming console to be widely available.
Were all about the ~new~ in todays society. Whenever the latest iPhone is released, people flock to the Apple store to line up and buy it. Likewise, watch nerds camped out for days earlier this year just to get their hands on an OMEGA x Swatch watch.
And gaming consoles are no different. In fact, when the PlayStation 5 was released, absolute chaos ensued. Retailers around the world were swamped with gamers who had to fight over the limited stock of PS5s.
It may surprise you to learn that its been almost two whole years since the PS5 was released. Thats right, the aforementioned chaos was making headlines back in November 2020. And yet, the PS5 is as elusive now as it was then.
With most products, two years after its release, youll be able to walk into any store and itll be in stock. To use the iPhone as an example again, the iPhone 12 was released around the same time as the PS5, in October 2020. And now, most if not all stores that sell phones have ample stock of the iPhone 12 readily available for purchase.

So, Sony’s saying that PS5 production could ease up by the second half of 2021. That’s splendid news!
However, one party that suggests that PS5 supply won’t meet demand is, ironically, Sony.
Whilst simultaneously ramping up PS5 production and hoping to satisfy some demand, Sony has also admitted that PS5 demand will outstrip supply throughout 2021, with an unnamed source saying:
“I dont think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldnt be able to catch up with demand.”
So, on one hand, Sony is saying that the balance of PS5 supply and demand “could return to normality” whilst also saying that its “supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand” in 2021 and potentially 2022. Strange.

I genuinely think this chip shortage is complete BS and just a market manipulation tactic to escalate the hype of the product and increase the true value of the consoles under our noses. Next gen consoles are forbidden fruit and most suckers will cough up the extra money at over 200% increase because they are sheep. Xbox is just as guilty of it for their series X yet for some reason the series S has no issues in supply? Because the series S is not nearly up to par with the series X or the ps5? Its really not much of an upgrade from the last gen, One X save for some minor increase in frame rate, and it is advertised as the after thought, is not desirable compared to the X. BUT STILL, there has never been a supply issue for the S despite the high likelihood that the Xbox fans who either refuse to give scalpers their money, or cant afford it, when given enough time, will cave in and still get the lesser model. Begrudgingly, as they stare at the sold out button for the series X.

The big question now is whether the PS5 will become readily available some time in 2022. Re-stocks are expected between now and the end of the year, but theyre likely to be sporadic, so youll still have to be alert if you hope to buy a console for the next few months.

When Will Ps5 Be Widely Available
Unfortunately, there isnt a straight forward answer to this. Sony hasnt confirmed outright when PS5 will be readily available again, with various issues preventing that from happening. The main problem is still the shortage in components used to manufacturer PS5 until this shortage can be rectified, production will continue to be affected.
The situation has also been exacerbated by scalpers, who have snapped up restocks before reselling at exorbitant prices.
Back in February 2021, Sony admitted that shortages will continue while pledging to do everything it can to ship PS5s as quickly as possible. Furthermore, AMD, who manufacturers the chips used in PS5, reckons shortages will continue as far as mid-2022.
The hardware behemoth previously corrected predicted that supply issues would continue into the first half of 2021.
Elsewhere, while Sonys Jim Ryan remained hopeful that the situation would improve later this year, the format holder remained realistic, saying the problem could extend into 2022.
Taking all of this into account and while there is no definitive answer its highly unlikely that PS5 will be readily available for the last few months of 2021. The situation is unlikely to improve until well into 2022 at this rate, as AMD predicts.
Right now, your best bet at getting your hands on PS5 is to watch out for the limited stock availability at retailers in the US and UK as they happen.
Ps5 Supply Won’t Recover Until 2022
Sony admits it can’t ramp up production of the PlayStation 5 quickly enough and the analysts we’ve talked to agree that the shortage won’t let up until 2022.
“I honestly don’t see this shortage getting better until next year,” Anshel Sag, Senior Analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy told TechRadar. “A big component of these console shortages is the fact that these consoles’ CPU and GPU are manufactured on the same process node as AMD’s rapidly growing CPU and GPU businesses for PCs.”
It’s not just Sony vying for these precious components either, according to Sag. “With Qualcomm and Apple taking up vast swaths of 5nm, there isn’t very much capacity left for vast jumps in demand even with process node optimizations.”
“Capacity isn’t easy to grow and the best thing that can happen to the industry is that PC demand cools off a bit now that everyone who needed a PC to work remotely has one. However, there still appears to be a lot of pent-up demand in the PC gaming segment which is still red hot and suffering from the worst GPU shortage I think I’ve ever seen in my 15-plus-year career.”

When Will Ps5 Production Meet Demand
Sony’s mixed messages aren’t really clarifying when PS5 production will meet demand. So, looking at what we know, let’s make an educated guess when PS5 production will finally meet demand.
Whilst Sony looks to produce many more PS5s over the summer, that doesn’t change the fact that there’s an ongoing global chip shortage that’s affecting the gaming industry, as well as other major industries, which isn’t likely to let up this year.
What this means is that, whilst Sony might produce more PS5s in the short-termperhaps satisfying holiday season, though it’s unlikely, to be honestthose stocks likely will dip back down to what we’re currently experiencing before too long. You should still expect to see small stock drops gone within seconds being the norm.

Besides this, console scalpers have been drying up what little PS5 stock there is. And, without the correct anti-scalping practices put in place, they’ll only be looking to further exploit the surge of PS5s.
Taking this all into account, we might see PS5 production satisfy demand by mid to late 2022. The global chip shortage could let up by then and, although the PS5 is a wildly sought-after console, as time goes on the demand will steadily fall, hopefully leaving stock readily available by that point.
The New Playstation 5 Model Specs And Price
Renka Schedule, , noted that Japanese websites are preparing to deploy the latest PS5 revision. Japanese authorities approved it in May. The next upgraded model will be known as the PS5 CFI-1200 series.
It is expected that Sony will include the rumored AMD 6nm chipset in the upcoming edition. And it makes the console more widely available. Even though the chipset is considerably different from the special 7nm AMD CPU already in the PS5, no significant performance improvements are predicted. Sony makes the change mainly for production.

Some agree that the 6nm chipset may be an additional cost, but it will also improve the consoles availability because this chipset is more widely available. Others believe the PlayStation 5 was barely revised and does not deserve a price increase.
