Ps5 In 202: Expect More Stock Shortages
Bad news for people still banking on PS5 restocks: Sony isnt expecting the hardware shortage to end in the first half of 2022.
Recently, Sony reduced its production target for April 2021 to March 2022 from 16 million to 15 million, and while the projection for the following fiscal year of 22.6 million is obviously better, manufacturing partners are reportedly worried that this is somewhat optimistic.
The most positive estimate comes from AMD, which produces the chipset for the PS5. Back in October, CEO Lisa Su said: I expect it to be from June-September of next year 2022 when, perhaps, it will be possible to go down to a video game store or a department store to buy a PlayStation 5 or an Xbox Series X without it being an impossible task.
The perhaps may be doing some heavy lifting there, as a lot of non-AMD components make up a PS5, but its something to hold on to if youre still on the hunt for hardware in 2022.

Sony Ps5 Setbacks Began With The Pandemic
Sony didn’t announce the PlayStation 5 for months during the first half of 2020 , allegedly delaying the initial reveal several times due to the pandemic. Rumors of a February launch event gave way to a supposedly scheduled March unveiling, turned into a April reveal that never was. We didn’t even see what it looked like until June.
Manufacturing and shipping timelines were stretched, and demand has outstripped supply it’s been seven years since a major Sony console launch. So Covid-19 has a lot to do with why you can’t find PS5 in stock today. Things didn’t get off to a running start for a product everyone wanted so badly.

The standard PS5 with its disc drive costs $499 / £449, while the PS5 Digital Edition is $399 / £359.
The standard PlayStation 5 price is on a par with the Xbox Series X, though, interestingly, the PS5 works out a little more expensive in certain countries.

The PS5 Digital Edition clocks in at $100 / £110 more than the Xbox Series S, but has a better spec list as it is essentially identical to the standard PS5, just without a 4K Blu-ray drive.

Ps5 In 202: Possible Revisions Ahead
Those who havent been able to get hold of a PS5 yet may wonder if theyre better holding out for a major hardware revision of some kind a Slim model, or even a souped up PS5 Pro edition.
Those hoping for such news may be interested in a report from May that suggested a revision to the hardware was coming in late 2022, possibly to deal with the ongoing chip shortages. The rumor is that Sony may switch from 7nm chips to 6nm ones, which could give the theoretical PS5 revision a bit of a performance bump.
But take that with a pinch of salt as, historically, it would be unprecedented. It took between three and six years for smaller versions of Sonys consoles to appear in the past, and the first Pro model console the PS4 Pro also took three years to show up.

Target PS5 restock dates have been hard to nail down. That’s because the retailer tends to drop inventory in certain regions. For instance, someone in Chicago could see PS5 inventory at their local store, whereas a New Yorker might not see any inventory whatsoever. In addition, Target tends to do early morning restocks that occur around 8 a.m. ET. That said, their last restock sold out in minutes.
Where To Buy Ps: Avoid The Ps5 Scalpers
Unfortunately, one of the main reasons for the shortage of PS5 consoles is due to scalpers. These opportunistic people have been using bots to scan retailers for PS5 stock when it becomes available and buy as many of the consoles as they can in one go.
Once they have the highly-desirable console, they will then sell them for extortionate prices, often for thousands of dollars. Business Insider reported one reseller managed to get hold of 200 PS5 consoles and managed to sell them for more than $40,000.
While this isnt illegal, its not exactly the most morally sound thing to do. But at least its not as bad as some people whove been pretending to sell PS5 consoles on eBay by simply posting photos of the console and scamming people to bid for them when there was no PS5 on offer.
It might seem absurd to buy a PS5 for over $1,000, especially as its launch game lineup isnt particularly profound. But with the coronavirus pandemic seeing more people staying at home, some PlayStation fans are clearly desperate to get their hands on a new console to keep them entertained.
We advise you avoid buying from such resellers, fake or otherwise. At $499 the PS5 is still quite an expensive console and it currently doesn’t have a huge library of games. So if you can wait until later this year, youre likely to have a lot more PS5 games to choose from and Sony should have more consoles available.
