At its core, Ratchet & Clank is a relatively familiar action-shooter. Insomniac does an incredible job at keeping things fresh with its pacing and the variety of interactions and goals. But its the presentation that does most of the lifting here.
Even after your 20th gunfight, you still wont believe what youre seeing on the screen. Rift Aparts visuals have a great deal of variety. Each location, weapon, and enemy looks distinct from the next. And enemies react differently depending on what youre shooting them with. Hit a goon on a flying motorbike with the Ricochet gun and watch them bounce around as the same bullet hits them over and over. In these moments, the animation stands out as the characters bend and warp like theyre in the latest CG animated hit.
And all of that is on top of the sheer density of the visuals. Even before the action starts, the world is eyepopping with its details. But then when you start shooting, everything explodes into particles and lovingly animated reactions.
So yes, the game is gorgeous. But more important, everything you do is more exciting and more fun because it looks so good. It is a feast for the eyes.
A New Level Of Control
You can see the power of the PlayStation 5 through Rift Aparts visuals, but the most impressive developments come from the DualSense controller.
When I move Ratchet forward and he steps down with his right foot, the right side of my controller makes the slightest rumble. The same thing happens with his left foot. As I sprint around the world, theres a small pitter-pat, pitter-pat, pitter-pat reverberating through my hands. When I break some boxes to collect bolts so I can buy new weapons, the controller rumbles, letting me feel the metal currency surge into Ratchets pockets. When Ratchet and Clank come across a nightclub in the course of their latest adventure, I can hear the dubstep music playing through my speakers, but I can also feel the beat of the music pulsing through my controller. These vibrations are often subtle, but grounding. They keep me focused on the game, helping me visualize what my character is doing even if my eyes wander somewhere else.
The triggers help me control every weapon I have. Sometimes, the adaptive triggers drastically change how I use my weapon, while other times a half-pull will just let me aim without pulling the left trigger, helping me land my shots on Dr. Nefarious baddies no matter what kind of situation Im in.
Zurkie’s Gastropub And Battleplex
Rivet and Clank arrive at Zurkie’s.
On the way to their destination, Clank laments the actions that lead him and Ratchet to end up in this situation and blames himself for his short-sightedness in showing off the Dimensionator in public. The two arrive at Zurkie’s Gastropub and Battleplex a refuelling depot and Zurkon family-run business floating in the debris of the planet Scarstu that had been destroyed years ago by the Emperor. Rivet and Clank go to the Gastropub and look for Zurkie the establishment’s owner and founder. Zurkie is a counterpart of Mr. Zurkon but is instead a pacifist with a stern violence restriction in his Gastropub.

Ratchet, along with his robot, Clank, will hop to other worlds and realities to defeat the enemy, Dr. Nefarious, who wants to destroy life.
Rift Apart is also a standalone title, which means players who didnt play Into The Nexus can still enjoy the upcoming title. According to Insomniac Studios, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart is an excellent title to start with the franchise. However, that upcoming game also bears some deep-connection with the previous games, which will be a delight for the old fans.

Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart is not on PS4.
The game is not coming to PS4, meaning Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart will only be on PS5 when it launches on June 11th.
This was confirmed by Insomnic Games on Twitter in Novemeber 2020, and the game is also only listed for next-gen on the PSN store.
As for why its not coming to last-gen, Insomniac Games have said that the game would not have been possible without the PS5s faster loading times.
This is because the game is said to take full advantage of the PS5s screamingly fast SSD to build worlds and project players from one place to another in instantaneous speeds.

These are small shortcomings, though. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a fantastic platformer. Its wild, creative, and mind-blowing.
Its dimensional jump feature is perfectly executed and adds so many extra layers to the platformer formula.
Gameplay is fun, explosive, and thrives on a crazy, upgradable arsenal. Despite the lack of strategic enemies, the acrobatic, colorful combat feels fantastic.
The performance is also stunning. The game flows seamlessly from beginning to end, a new feature in the genre.
Rift Apart pushes the platform genre forward despite its flaws. Moreover, it showcases the power of the PS5, a significant achievement for the Sony console family.
Overall, its an easy recommendation. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a top-tier game.

You only move across a very small part of the world and have very little ability to even move during this section this means the game has the whole time youre playing the section to load in the next section.
So imagine the game has two memory buffers. The first buffer holds the section youre currently playing in. While youre playing, it can load the next section into the second buffer. To transition between the buffers you can just have a very simple intermediate Void location permanently in memory to hide any swap-over glitches that might happen.
After explaining the method in more detail, Burton explains that its perfectly possible that the game could be using the SSD to do everything properly.
Im just explaining how other pretty simple techniques can be used to achieve exactly the same thing on older hardware, he states.

Will Ratchet And Clank: Rift Apart Be On Ps4
As mentioned, stock levels for the PS5 have not been as high as many would have hoped and while it was fully expected that the console would be fully available now in most places, that has turned out to not be the case and many could still be struggling to get their hands on one into 2022.
Ratchet and Clank being such a popular Sony franchise has led to many calling for the game to get a PS4 debut too so that those who have been unable to get the latest console can still play it. But with the game being marketed as a PS5 exclusive, that seemed unlikely and if you were hoping that was set to change then, unfortunately, we would not advise getting your hopes up.
It has been very clearly stated now that there are no plans for the game to get a PS4 release and that there have not been any discussions about that changing – so it’s PS5 or nothing if you want to play Rift Apart.
The exact reasoning for this has not been made clear but we imagine that, given the fact that this has been designed for the PS5 and is supposedly a game meant to show off the immense power that the console has, it simply would not run nearly well enough on the PS4 to make a release a possibility.
