How to transfer your games and saved data from PS4 to PS5

Did you know that you can transfer PS4 save data to PS5, carrying over all that amazing progress onto Sony’s newest console? Thanks to backward compatibility support, you can do just that! Unfortunately, making the transfer isn’t as easy as it could be, which is why we’ve put together this handy guide to help you out.

While the PS4 is a great all-rounder, offering a fantastic catalog of AAA games and an affordable price tag, there’s no denying that the PS5 has really dressed to impress. That’s thanks to its revolutionary controller and lightening-quick load times, not to mention the beautiful user interface. So, it comes as no surprise that some of you would be wanting to make the switch.

And, while you can absolutely transfer PS4 save data to PS5, there’s a few things that are worth being aware of. Some of the best PS4 games with a new-gen copy won’t let you transfer your data over to PS5, which is unfortunate. There’s also a lot of hoop jumping that will be going on if you don’t have PS Plus, so we recommend you subscribe to that as trust us, it’ll make things a lot easier.

There’s another snag too – if you bought a game on disc and you’ve gone on to see it, you’ll likely need to repurchase it or buy a digital copy as a number of PS5 games require that you boot up your existing PS4 copy first and download/upload the save file manually. An example of this would be which you need the disc itself to carry out the transfer migration process.

Play Ps4 Games Stored On An External Drive On Ps5

The PlayStation 5 supports external hard drives for playing PS4 games. As a result, if you have an external hard drive connected to your PS4, you can simply disconnect it from your PS4 and connect it to the PS5 to have immediate access to those titles.

Make sure you turn off your PS4 or tell the system to stop using the storage device before unplugging it. To do so, hold the PS Button on your controller to open the Quick Menu, then select Sound/Devices > Stop Using Extended Storage.

Since your games are already stored on the USB drive, you won’t have to reinstall anything to play them.

You Will Not Have To Start Over

Transferring PS4 data to PS5 will allow you to continue with your progress in all of your games.

Imagine if you are playing your retro game collection that spans almost every era. You have amassed a lot of games over a long period of time. However, you have been playing the same handful of games for quite some time now. This is where it will be important to know how to transfer data from PS4 to PS5 so that you can start new games once again.

How To Transfer Ps4 Data To Ps5

November 3, 2022 by Jacqueline Michelle

Some time ago, Sony announced a new console called the PlayStation 5. Since then, it has been discussed endlessly on the internet about just how to transfer data from your PS4 to your PS5.

This is especially interesting when considering that there is no official response from Sony yet with regard to the process of doing this. Most of what has been found on the internet are just theories and not definite information or steps for how this could be done.

This guide is for all those who want to know more about the possibility of how to transfer data from your PS4 to your brand new PS5.

Here are the steps that you need to follow in order to be able to transfer data from your PS4 to your PS5.

Do Ps4 Games Look Better On The Ps5

Horizon Zero Dawn and Killzone Shadow Fall PS4 Saves Transferable to ...

For the most part, yes. Thanks to boost mode, older games will see an improvement when loaded up on the new system, but it will not be the case for all of them – most is better than none, though.

Straight from the horse’s mouth, here is what Sony had to say about it: “Were expecting backwards compatible titles will run at a boosted frequency on PS5 so that they can benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions. Were currently evaluating games on a title-by-title basis to spot any issues that need adjustment from the original software developers.”

Plus, it’s worth noting that if you have a PS4 game stored on your PS5’s internal SSD, as opposed to an external hard drive you added yourself, you should see the benefit of faster loading times.

Do Ps1 Ps2 And Ps3 Games Work On The Ps5

While it is great that PS4 games will play on the PS5, there are still three generations’ worth of consoles prior to that which have a plethora of games on them, many of which are regarded as outright classics. For now, at least, most of those PS1, PS2 and PS3 games will not be playable on the next-gen machine.

Rumours abound that a solution to this issue is on the way, and while Sony has not said anything concrete, we would be surprised if this was not announced in the foreseeable future. There are rumblings for a retro gaming subscription service on PS5, which would certainly be welcomed by us.

As a quick aside, though, the PS2 Classics games that already came to the PS4 should all work on your PS5 – so that’s something! Just don’t expect all your old favourites to be there, and definitely don’t try putting a PS1, PS2 or PS3 disc in your PS5.

Here are a few ways to transfer your PS4 games and save data to your PS5.

Automatically Install Ps4 Games To An External Drive From Ps5

How to move your PS4 games and saves to the PS5

Another great feature of the PS5 is being able to automatically install any PS4 game from your PS5 onto your external drive. This ensures your PS5’s internal storage doesn’t get used up by PS4 games.

  • Navigate to Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage.
  • Select the Install PS4 Games to USB Extended Storage option.

Any PS4 games will then automatically be downloaded to your external drive, saving you more space on the internal drive for PS5 games. Once the games have been moved, you can find them in USB Extended Storage from the Storage menu.

Is It Safe To Use An External Hard Drive On Ps5

The answer is yes. Using an external drive for your PS5 is relatively safe for your device if you follow the correct steps when connecting. Do not remove the external HDD while your PS5 is running. This may lead to data corruption, forcing you to reformat your drive.

You will lose all your downloaded games. If these happen, you need not worry about your PS5. Things like these typically occur, but they will not affect your console.

How To Transfer Saved Games From Ps4 To Ps5

If you plan on moving or transferring saved games to your PS4, you can also make use of a USB storage device. Just make sure that you create a copy of your saved games before selling or giving your PS4 away.

NOTE:Keep in mind that if you preferred to move your saved data using the first method as detailed above, you wont need to use a USB storage device or an external USB hard drive to move game data.

If you dont have access to your PS4 anymore when your PS5 arrives, the only way to transfer saved data or game saves is via the PlayStation Plus cloud. This assumes, of course, that you uploaded your saved games to the cloud before you lost access to your PS4.

Also, dont forget that you need an active PlayStation Plus membership in order to upload your saved game data to the cloud.

If your PS5 is ready and you have everything covered, simply sign in to your PSN account and storage.

Move Your Ps4 Games To Ps5 With A Lan Cable To Shrink Transfer Times

Wi-fi transfer is a lot slower than a wired connection

If you’re picking up a PS5 in the next few days , chances are you’ll want to play some of your old games on your new hardware. If you’re working out how to transfer PS4 games to PS5 en masse, you’ll definitely want to consider using a LAN cable to get you playing as quickly as possible.

IGN UK ‘s Joe Skrebels says that when they went to transfer “several hundred gigabytes” of games, their initial approach was to use the console’s wi-fi transfer process. In total, however, that process would have taken more than a day, topping out at 27 hours. When Skrebels decided instead to use a LAN cable to transfer their games, that figure dropped to just three hours. For those of you doing the maths at home, that just a little over 10% of the time it would have taken over wi-fi, and for those with less reliable internet is probably the difference between enjoying your PS5 during launch week and having to wait until several days after release.

This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t use wi-fi transfer under any circumstances. If you’re only moving a few smaller games around and have a reliable connection, you probably won’t be wasting an entire day moving things around. As a general rule, however, it’s probably worth using a wired connection in almost every situation, particularly if you were already storing some of your PS4 games on an external hard drive.

When you hit Continue, youll be given a five-minute countdown. Youll have to press your PS4s power button for one second until it beeps before the countdown ends.
