Xbox One or Playstation 4: Which is Better?

At this point, the argument between whether PlayStation or Xbox is better is two decades old. Here, at the end of this console generation, we can look back and judge what the PS4 and Xbox Ones strengths and weaknesses are, but to a certain degree, it comes down to personal preference.

  • Until Dawn
  • Yakuza series

Xbox, on the other hand, has had a lackluster exclusive lineup this generation. Halo only received one title for the Xbox One, and besides Gears of War and Forza, there arent many unique titles for Microsofts console to get excited for.

Reasons To Choose Xbox One Over Playstation 4

The Xbox One, Microsofts third generation home console, has proven quite profitable for the company. It is currently outpacing the Xbox 360 in terms of both hardware and software sales at this respective point in its lifecycle. With the Xbox 360 generally deemed a commercial success, it stands to reason that the Xbox One would be viewed in much the same way. Alas, with the PlayStation 4 dominating the market with a near 2:1 ratio thanks to some early PR victories , the Xbox brand has found itself playing second fiddle this generation. That is a shame because Microsoft has made major strides since the consoles disastrous first year on the market in making the Xbox One a viable competitor to the PS4. The Xbox One is a system that deserves attention and here are 10 reasons why it is worth a purchase, whether it be the standard Xbox One S model or the more powerful Xbox One X.

Ps4 Pro Vs Xbox One X: Value

How much more are you willing to pay for the Xbox One Xs power? Specifically, its a $100 question. The Xbox One X starts at $499 and includes a 1TB HDD. The PlayStation 4 Pro, though, is $399 and also has 1TB of internal storage. Both support external storage, so you can upgrade as you like.

So the big question in what youre paying for are the differences. The Xbox One X is smaller, plays 4K Blu-ray discs, and promises to run games at 60 fps and 4K. The PlayStation 4 Pro also plays games in 4K and has a VR headset that you can grab right now.

If you prefer the best exclusives, the PS4 certainly has the better game library. And at the moment, weve yet to be able to test exactly what the Xbox One X will do with old games and upcoming releases.

Winner: PlayStation 4 Pro. The PS4 Pro is $100 less, has the same amount of storage as the Xbox One X and can play games in 4K.

Xbox One Vs Playstation : Which Game Console Is Best

Xbox One Vs Playstation 4 Comparison (Which one is better ...

Its been two years since the Xbox One and PS4 debuted here in the U.S. In that time, theyve both earned their keep as the bearer of current-generation game consoles. Microsoft realized some months after release that it needed a $400, price-competitive version with the PS4 that lacked the Kinect camera, and has since remedied what was once a bit of a lopsided, apples-and-oranges comparison.

Since then, both the Xbox One and PS4 have sold pretty well, with the edge on Sonys side although Januarys $50 price cut for the Kinect-less Xbox One helped Microsoft catch up. Both companies have released various bundles that may throw the price advantage in one direction or the other depending on whether you want whats in a given bundle. That said, how do the two consoles directly compare with each other? If youre thinking about buying one of these two consolesor just want ammunition for bragging rightsheres what you need to know.

One note before we get started: Unlike all previous console generations, the PS4 and Xbox One are almost identical hardware-wise. With an x86 AMD APU at the heart of each, the Sony and Microsoft consoles are essentially PCs and their hardware specs, and thus relative performance, can be compared in the same way you would compare two x86-based laptops or ARM-based Android tablets. Xbox One S Vs Ps4 Pro Graphics

  • Xbox One S uses simplistic upscaling to generate 4K images.
  • PS4 Pro renders at higher resolution and uses more intelligent upscaling.

The headline graphical feature of both consoles is their 4K output, but how exactly each console achieves this is a little different.

With the Xbox One S its 4K output in games is generated by a process known as upscaling. The games themselves are rendered at a maximum resolution of 1080p and then stretched to have it fill the entirety of a 4K screen.

Since 4K is four times the resolution of Full HD this means that with the One S each one of the game’s pixels is being stretched across four of your television’s pixels, and the result is an image thats much less crisp and detailed than what 4K is truly capable of.

Like the Xbox One S, the PS4 Pro is also not always capable of displaying native 4K content some games, such as Skyrim, will hit those heady pixel heights – but more often it too will be a case of upscaling on Sony’s machine. At least with the PS4 Pro however, it is slightly cleverer with how it fakes it.

Each game handles its upscaling slightly differently, but a general theme so far has been that games will render at a resolution thats between Full HD and 4K and then use a more advanced upscaling method called checkerboard rendering to fill its 4K pixels.

The PS4 Pro has given itself a big boost with the addition of its aptly named ‘Boost Mode’ in its 4.5 firmware update.

Ps4 Pro Vs Xbox One X: Entertainment

The Xbox Ones roots as an entertainment device were controversial when it launched but still give it a huge lead in this round. The Xbox One X’s HDMI-in port lets gamers route their cable boxes through their Xbox to watch live TV on their console.

The Xbox One X also has a ton of entertainment apps, including a number from individual TV and web channels, such as CBS, AMC and Seeso. For music, you can stream from DLNA-enabled devices or put your tunes into the Groove Music app.

The PS4 has a lesser range of entertainment apps, but it does share a number with Xbox, including Netflix and Hulu. The ace up its sleeve is that it offers Spotify, which the Xbox One X doesnt include. The PS4 Pro once also offered PlayStation Vue, a streaming television package, but that has since been discontinued.

Both systems can stream in 4K from apps such as Netflix, but only the Xbox One X has a 4K Blu-ray drive to get 4K off of a disc.

Winner: Xbox One X. Microsoft’s system has a better variety of apps. It also has a 4K Blu-ray drive, which the PS4 Pro lacks.

Xbox One X Vs Playstation 4 Pro: Ports

WHATS BETTER XBOX ONE OR playstation 4

The Xbox One and Xbox One S had plenty of ports, and the One X continues that tradition. Besides its power port, it offers three USB 3.0 , HDMI-in and out ports, IR out, S/PDIF and an Ethernet jack. As with the Xbox One S, there isn’t any direct input for Kinect. On the Xbox One S, it required an adapter, and that’s the case here as well.

The PS4 Pro has a pair of USB 3.0 ports on the front and another on the back. The back of the console is also where you’ll find the HDMI-out port, optical out port, Ethernet jack, auxiliary port and power port.

Winner: Xbox One X. While otherwise similar, the Xbox One X’s HDMI-out and HDMI-in ports let you use it to pass your cable box’s signal through your Xbox so you can watch TV on your game console.

Ps4 Vs Xbox One: Subscription Price

The price of the console is one thing, but the subscription price can often be a deal breaker. If you’re the kind of person that doesn’t really like multiplayer games, nor free games, then there’s no real need for you to subscribe to either Sony’s or Microsoft’s subscription services.

But if you’re like me, and crave playing with my friends whenever I get the time, then signing up to PS Plus or Xbox Live is a must. Below, we’ve made a handy table that’ll show you the price of each subscription service.

Subscription Services
Xbox Live Gold $9.99
Xbox Live Gold $24.99
Xbox Live Gold $59.99
PS Plus $59.99

Fortunately, there’s no difference when it comes to the subscription services of the Xbox One and the PS4. It once again, boils down to which console you regard with the most trust, or which console has the most exclusive games that you want to play. Which leads to our next category…

Xbox One Vs Ps: Bottom Line

With all the above said and done, Sonys PS4 is our overall favorite console. But only just. It pips Microsofts console to the post, thanks to its larger range of killer exclusive games, from the likes of God of War, The Last of Us 2, Uncharted 4 and Bloodborne. It also has a huge range of third-party games, a pleasingly intuative user interface, and a controller that is more innovative than the Xbox Wireless Controller, even if its perhaps not quite as good in everyday gaming use.

But we cant push the Xbox One aside completely, as thanks to exclusives like Halo, Gears 5, and Forza Horizon 4, Microsofts gaming machine is still an excellent console, though wed recommend getting the Xbox One X if youre going to an Xbox One machine. Its also worth remembering that the Xbox One S and One X can both play 4K Blu-rays, unlike the PS4. And Xbox Game Pass offers a huge library of games to play for some $10 a month arguably the Xbox One wins on sheer value for money.

With the Xbox Series X and PS5 now here, pitting the Xbox One vs the PS5 might seem a little moot. But its worth remembering that both consoles offer backwards compatibility, so any games you get for them now will be playable on their newer counterparts. So in effect, you’ll be building your game library ready for a generational upgrade.

Disc Drives And Storage

The Xbox One S, Xbox One X, PS4 Pro and PS4 have physical disc drives, with the Xbox One consoles also able to play 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays. Sony, even as a founding member of the Blu-ray Disc Association, decided against adding a 4K Blu-ray deck to either PS4. They are still able to play conventional 1080p Blu-rays, but not Ultra HD discs.

The Nintendo Switch can do neither. The Japanese firm opted to dispense with discs altogether, with games coming on cartridge instead, much like the 3DS and Nintendo consoles of yore.

Games are also available via download stores, but considering how stingy Nintendo has been with on-board storage, you’ll have to invest in a microSD card to store more than a couple at a time.

The Xbox One S was originally available in a 500GB size, although the 1TB version is the standard model you’ll find in stores these days. The Xbox One X also sports a 1TB drive.

The latest PS4 is available in 500GB and 1TB sizes, while the PS4 Pro is a 1TB console. All Xbox and PlayStation machines have the ability to increase the storage through third-party hard drives – via external USB 3.0 HDDs. In addition, all PS4 models can be expanded through swapping the internal 3.5-inch internal drives.

The Switch, on the other hand, comes with 32GB of built-in storage. Big-name games, especially those from Nintendo itself, often take up at least half of that.

Which Sold More: The Xbox One Or Ps4

PS4 vs Xbox One: Which Console is better?

It is a timeless debate: what console is superior? The Xbox or the PlayStation? Gamers have been arguing since the release of Microsoft’s Xbox, back in November 2001. It cannot be denied the Xbox changed how companies approached home consoles. The use of PC technology really helped mold the gaming landscape.

The PlayStation quickly became a staple in the gaming industry. Sony released its first major console with so many exclusive titles. Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, and Ape Escape all became fan favorite games. The PlayStation was known for its prized titles, but Sony quickly adapted its hardware to match Microsoft’s Xbox.

Both companies and systems went through multiple evolutions. The Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 were built with some of the highest quality hardware that the gaming industry has ever seen. Microsoft and Sony both continuously tried to outdo one another. The companies released enhanced and updated versions of their consoles on more than one occasion.

In the beginning, it seemed PlayStation would always be destined to chase after the Xbox and its superior hardware. How does that compare to today?

Xbox One Vs Ps: Hardware And Design

  • The PS4 has a slim version and a 4K PS4 Pro
  • The Xbox has the Xbox One S, Xbox One S All-Digital Edition and Xbox One X

Both the Xbox One and the PS4 have different versions that you can buy right now. The PS4 has two and the Xbox One has three. This is different than in the past, when each console existed on its own, and lasted an entire generation.

The Xbox One S improved on the design of the original Xbox One by cutting down a lot of the heft, and removing the gigantic power brick, making use of an internal power supply instead. It measures 11.6 x 8.9 x 2.5 inches, and unlike the previous version includes a 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray player it will even upscale 1080p games to 4K, as long as you have a TV that can support it.

However, if you prefer a more streamlined version of the Xbox One S then the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition may be more your cup of tea. The 1TB disc-less console looks and performs like its predecessor but lacks a disc drive so that means no Blu-ray or physical discs.

The Xbox One X might be heftier than the Xbox One S, but its still considerably smaller than the original Xbox One, coming in at 11.81 x 9.44 x 2.36 inches and weighing around 8.4 lbs . This is the high-powered version of the Xbox One, with native 4K gaming as well as a 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray player .

Xbox One S Vs Ps4 Pro Price

  • Xbox One S is the cheaper of the two consoles.

Although wed love for money to be no object when it comes to gaming, the reality is that for most people price is a significant factor in determining what to buy, and thats especially true around the holiday season.

In the price department, the Xbox One S has the advantage. At $349 , the console is just that little bit cheaper than the PS4 Pros $399 . However there are always offers to be had, particularly in this console generation, so be sure to keep an eye on our best
