Sony has always kept online play free unlike Microsoft. That all changed when it was announced at E3 you need a PlayStation Plus subscription on the PS4 for online play.
In a recent interview with Famitsu, Sony President Shuhei Yoshida says it was not possible to keep it free with the amount of investment the company theyre putting to resources.

The main pillar for the PS4 will be online play. Were developing many new ways to play and connect which requires a large investment of resources. Considering the cost, to try to keep such a service free and consequently lower the quality would be absurd. We decided that if thats the case, then it would be better to receive proper payment and continue to offer a good service.
He added in the fact that you dont need more than one PlayStation Plus account on one console to access the benefits of PS Plus. If you have more than one account on the PS4, only one of them needs to have a PS Plus subscription.
