Compared to the older headset the difference is night and day. For a start, theres real space to the sound, so when Sam is talking to you from 20m away it sounds as if he really is 20m away, and when youre out in the Scottish Highlands the whole thing sounds open and airy, unlike on the old headset where it might as well be a drawing room.

How Is The Microphone
The microphone of the PlayStation Gold Wireless Headset is, in a word, bad. From a frequency response perspective, its got a pretty significant dip in the bass range, which can make deeper voices sound pretty distorted. The over-emphasis in the high range makes sense, as it will make sibilant sounds come through more prominently.
However, the real issue with this microphone doesnt show up on the frequency response chart. Theres a pretty significant issue with clarity here, and it seems to largely stem from the fact that the mic is embedded in the left headphone, rather than attached to a wire. It sounds a little bit like youre talking into a tin can. Have a listen for yourself:

Battery Life And Connectivity
Sony doesnt quote a target number for the headsets battery life, but if we had to do an estimate based on the time weve used it, its probably around the 12- to 14-hour mark. We were able to play on and off for an eight-hour period, and we barely dove past the two-thirds mark according to the PS4.
Now, of course that might be different if youre using different audio levels and are constantly chatting to friends, but for the average user its fair to expect around a dozen hours before its time to plug back in.
Obviously one of the the headsets major selling points is its ability to go wireless but, should you decide to run it into a mobile device or your PlayStation VR, Sony includes a standard 3.5mm-to-3.5mm audio cable inside every box.
Inside youll also find a micro-USB cable, the wireless dongle and a soft cloth carrying pouch. The basic audio cable should allow you to plug it into any 3.5mm jack and draw out audio, and act as a headset for most mobile phones.

Looks and comfort.
A mix of brushed stainless steel and the same matte-black plastic the PS4 is made from, the Platinum really nails the high-end feel. Its clean lines, sturdy build and smart placement of discrete audio controls mean these could easily pass for a pair of normal over-ear headphones.
Youd be hard-pressed to find a pair that feels as comfortable to wear, with cosseting ear cushions that are soft enough that you rarely feel any pressure against the side of your head, even when wearing glasses, while a suspended headband relieves pressure on the top of your head. They fold away neatly, too, and come with their own carry pouch for easy storage and transportation.

Extending one of our other answers here, the great news is that almost anything that resembles a headset or pair of headphones can be used on PS5. So if you need to save up from scratch to get a premium set, then you can still be safe in the knowledge that your old wired set can do you a great service in the meantime.

The good news is that it does.
Set Battlefield 1 to surround headphones in the audio options menu and, while you dont get the effects that appear to become from above or below you, you do still get a very decent surround sound experience that does a great job of helping you pin down where effects are coming from, which not only makes the whole experience more cinematic, but can also give you a hefty advantage in competitive matches.
Once again, theres a spaciousness to the delivery and a crispness to each sound that makes it a clear improvement over the same game played while wearing the old headset. It makes the whole experience way more immersive, and therefore more exciting.
And if you are playing online youll be pleased to hear that the Platinum Wireless Headsets invisible microphones do a very decent job of picking up your voice. Theyll still pick just a little bit more outside audio than one of those little mics that sits millimetres from your mouth, but the built-in noise-cancelling does a great job of ensuring your compatriots arent forced to hear your better half doing the washing up.

Sony’s new Platinum Headset is the new upgrade to the excellent Wireless Headset 2.0 released three years ago, known as the ‘Gold’ headset in North America. The new offering is an accomplished piece of hardware based on more robust build materials, notably featuring higher quality 50mm speaker drivers, along with a unique 3D ‘object-based’ surround sound mode. But these enhancements come at a price – at around £130/$160, the new headset is over twice the price of the original, but the increase in quality is palpable.
Let’s start with what’s in the box. With the headset you get a wireless USB adapter, a micro-USB charging cable, a 3.5mm audio cable, and a carrying pouch. Setup from there is simple you plug that USB adapter into your PS4, switch the headset on from the left cup, and the two pair automatically. This adapter is key to using the headset wirelessly, and even works on PC with no hassle – once you plug the adapter in, all drivers install immediately. As another bonus, you can wire the headset to mobile phones using the audio cable. This switches the headphones off completely, avoiding any of use the inbuilt rechargeable battery, and disabling the buttons. It basically turns into a regular, passive pair of headphones, but audio quality still holds up very nicely.

Guns have weight melee attacks have true presence you can hear the rustling of grass around you and the crunching of boots on gravel. How Is The Battery Life
Sony doesnt make any claims about how long the battery for this headset is supposed to last, but in our testing we found it managed just over 8 hours and 8 minutes of continuous playback. You might find you get more than that, given that our test runs a little louder than many listen to headphones . However, if you play with surround sound on the whole time, you likely wont even see that 8-hour mark.

For those familiar with the SteelSeries Arctis 7P, the 7P+ will look basically identical. But sound quality is king for us, and so it proved again in our testing with the 7P+. The sound is clear, distinct, detailed, rich, and well-rounded – the lack of the bass is a slight complaint but that’s our only real complaint. To round out the experience, we’re still big fans of the excellent build that remains too: there’s a chic design, the build makes the headset strong and solid while retaining great comfort, and the ski-goggle headband is still as great as ever, as are the retractable microphone and onboard controls.
