How then did the only known remaining prototype end up at Advanta Corporation? It turns out one of the board members of Advanta, Olaf Olaffson, was the former president of the Sony Electronic Publishing Corp, and instrumental in the creation of the Sony PlayStation console we know and love today. Olafsson had also worked at Sony at the time of the NIntendo partnership, and saw it come together and then completely fall apart.
At some point after the partnership with Nintendo collapsed and Sony decided to strike out on its own, but before the rest of the prototype consoles were packed up or destroyed, Olafsson got his hands on one. The circumstances are unknownit may have just been something he forgot to throw away, or it might have been a personal souvenir he kept as a reminder of Sony’s first foray into the world of video games . Whatever the circumstances, when Advanta Corporation went bankrupt, Olafsson left the one-of-a-kind prototype in his New York office and its contents were packed up and sent to a company storage facility in Pennsylvania with everything else. “There were also some plaques, some shoes, a tie,” Diebold told Engadget in 2015.
Built To Last Forever
When Nintendo launched the NES in 1983, they had no idea it would continue selling until 2003, 20 years later. Sure, it had it’s problems, like having to give the game cartridge a little cleaning before putting it into the console to play. Or having to shove a second game into the NES so it would let you play your game. But those are minor issues and you could fix them yourself.
Most people bought one NES and that was it. Then, in 1989, they upgraded to the Super Nintendo, which was the second longest selling console ever, 14 years. Those lasted just as long.
This is because Nintendo builds a product that will last forever if you take care of it. They would rather hear about how happy their consumers are that they only have to purchase one console than argue with all the upset users that hate hearing about the “ring of death”.
Sony Takes Its Revenge
Its at this point that the dogged resourcefulness of Kutaragi became apparent. The leader of the PlayStation project argued that the hard work already poured into the venture by Sony shouldnt be squandered, and that the company should soldier on without Nintendo.
He also claimed that working with aging 16-bit technology was a mistake the PlayStation should be based around a more powerful 32-bit processor and equipped with custom hardware that would allow for real-time rendering of 3D graphics similar to those seen in the latest arcade titles, like Virtua Fighter and Ridge Racer.
Sonys board, already tired from the years of fruitless bartering with Nintendo, were unimpressed by such ideas and Sony president Norio Ohga seemed reluctant to spend any more cash on this project.
But Kutaragi then delivered the hammer blow could a firm with such a proud history as Sony afford to allow Nintendo to get the upper hand after its shameful back-stabbing? The desire for revenge clearly hit a nerve with Ohga, as he gave Kutaragi leave to continue development on the PlayStation.

Nintendo Provides A One
When the latest Call of Duty video game was released, it sold on three different platforms. It was launched for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Most of the games that are sold for the PlayStation 4 are also available on the Xbox and PC, leaving very little room to talk to anyone about a unique experience.
However, Nintendo is the only video game company that PC users still can only play using the console. There is not a Nintendo game that is released for the latest Nintendo console and also the PC. That gives an entire community a chance to enjoy a unique experience through a Nintendo console.
Yamauchi Plots A Double
It was an arrangement that didnt satisfy Nintendo, a company that was famously aggressive when it came to extracting licensing fees from publishers who produced games for its consoles. These fees pulled in millions of dollars of revenue for Nintendo each year, and the notion of sharing this booty with Sony a company that had no experience of working in the gaming hardware sector clearly didnt sit well.
Sonys intentions were clear it wanted a route into the gaming market and if the union were a success, Nintendo would have effectively created a new rival at its own expense. As a result, the wily Yamauchi approached Dutch firm Philips and started secret negotiations on producing an entirely different CD-ROM attachment for the SNES all while Sony was charging forward with its own plans.Things came to a head at the 1991 Consumer Electronics Show. Sony proudly used its press conference to lift the lid on the Super Disc format, the SNES CD attachment and the jewel in the crown the stand-alone SNES PlayStation system with which it hoped to become a major player in gaming sector almost overnight.
The next day, Nintendo well and truly piddled on Sonys strawberries by revealing to the assembled throng that it had inked a new deal with Philips to produce a CD-ROM drive for the SNES.

The Pricing War Between The Nintendo Ds And The Psp
When the PSP, PlayStation Portable, launched in North America in March of 2005, it was being sold for $249, which was about $100 more than the Nintendo DS. The large price tag for the portable device did not seem to matter when it launched and Sony claimed it sold 500,000 units in the first two days.
Those numbers were probably due to the many PlayStation gamers that were ready for a portable device and were willing to pay whatever they sold it for because within a couple months, that price tag ended up killing its’ momentum in 2006 as it almost 60% less units than the final two quarters of 2005.
The Console Wars Continue
Sony appears poised to maintain its dominance in consoles sold, predicts Piers Harding-Rolls, research director for games at Ampere Analysis.
Sony, he said, “remains in a good position for the new generation,” and will likely sell 8.5 million PS5s worldwide by the end of March, he estimates. Microsoft “will be more competitive,” selling 6.5 million Xbox Series S/X consoles.
The new consoles arrive at a good time, with the COVID-19 pandemic keeping many folks at home. Games are one of the few entertainment sectors expected to see growth this year, with a forecast compound annual growth rate of 6.4% from now to 2024, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers.
“Video games in the pandemic have continued to flourish,” said PwC principal CJ Bangah.
U.S. spending on games in 2020 is expected to hit a new record of $50 billion, fueled by $13.4 billion in spending during the holiday season, according to The NPD Group.
Despite the hype of new consoles, NPD’s Mat Piscatella expects the Nintendo Switch, which has sold more than 68 million units since its release in 2017, “to continue on its current trajectory as being one of the fastest-selling consoles in U.S. history.”

Long before television sets and video games, people had to find other ways to entertain themselves. The year was 1991. Ninja Turtles and Ring Pops were all the rage, and while the cool kids practiced their Running Man in stonewashed jeans, Sony and Nintendo were poised to make gaming history together. The companies had teamed up to build a console unlike any the world had ever seen. Then it all went wrong.
The story of the failed Nintendo PlayStation deal, which ended with Nintendo stabbing Sony in the back by refusing to make games for the console they conceived together, marks a critical turning point in the history of video games. It lead not only to Sony’s rise as a leading games developer, but also marked the beginning of one of the greatest rivalries in industry history.
“Nintendo and Sony started off as partners which is unbelievable today. That’s actually the roots of PlayStation,” said Tristan Donovan, author of Wondery’s latest Business Wars podcast series, which examines the feud. “It was a partnership between Nintendo and Sony, which went very, very wrong.”
“The thing that’s really special about Nintendo and Sony waging war in the 90s is that it was such a pivotal time in video games,” Donovan told Newsweek. “We went from 2D to 3D, from cartridges to cassette tapes to CDs. We also saw a shift in games being mainly for children to being for adults.”
This demographic shift could be considered one of the defining features of the Sony vs. Nintendo rivalry, and continues to play a major role in shaping the games we play today.
Introduced To The United States In 1995
The PlayStation was introduced to the United States at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles in May 1995. They pre-sold over 100,000 units by September’s US launch. Within a year, they had sold almost two million units in the United States and over seven million worldwide. They reached the milestone of 100 million units by the end of 2003.

Two Egos Dont Equal One Console
Artist impressions of the Sony-made CD-ROM attachment began appearing in magazines almost as soon as the SNES hit Japanese store shelves in late 1990. Its specs were impressive, and it would have placed the already potent 16-bit console leagues ahead of its closest rival, the Sega Mega Drive. However, Sony and Nintendos relationship was a rocky one almost from the beginning, with neither company wishing to cede dominance to the other.
On one hand there was Nintendo and its famously power-hungry boss Hiroshi Yamauchi the man who had little interest in video games beyond their potential to generate cash, and who had cannily changed the company from a humble toy maker to a global gaming behemoth.
On the other was Sony, one of Japans most famous corporations and a firm that had achieved international renown thanks to its excellent line of TVs, stereos and the iconic Walkman. Nintendo would benefit from Sonys expertise with CD-ROM technology, while Sony would gain a valuable foothold in an industry that had thus far largely ignored it. The trouble is, neither firm was flexible enough to make this arrangement work.
The initial deal was that Sony would manufacture a CD-ROM attachment that would bolt onto the bottom of the SNES system, just like the Sega Mega CD did with the Mega Drive. Sonys new CD-ROM standard Super Disc would be used for the games, and as a result, Sony could claim licensing fees from every publisher that produced software for the system.
They Compete On Their Own Terms
Nintendo has always marched to the beat of their own drum. They have always led by example and with the success of their most recent console, the Nintendo Switch, they continue to by the real innovators of the video gaming world.
For the last few years, it seemed as if Microsoft and Sony were trying to beat each other instead of focus on their consoles. Nintendo does not speed up release dates, add ridiculous last minute additions to their consoles, or play a pricing war with their competitor’s if it means that they will lose quality on their consoles.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc
Kutaragi developed games in a 3D polygon graphics format. Not everyone at Sony approved of the PlayStation project and it was shifted to Sony Music in 1992, which was a separate entity. They further spun off to form Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. in 1993.
The new company attracted developers and partners that included Electronic Arts and Namco, who were excited about the 3D-capable, CD-ROM based console. It was easier and cheaper to manufacture CD-ROMs compared with the cartridges used by Nintendo.

PlayStation is Sonys first game console released in 1994. It has included successor consoles and upgrades including the Net Yaroze. The PlayStation is the first video game console that got 102 million consoles sold all over the world.
This seventh generation game console was released in 2006. It competes with the Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii. The PS3 is the first console in the series to introduce the use of motion-sensing technology through its Six axis wireless controller. The PlayStation 3 has sold 80 million consoles worldwide. This was the first and last time Nintendo would get more sales then PlayStation.

What If Nintendo And Sony Went Through With Their Partnership
Its a question that I have thought about many times over. It isnt a heavily discussed topic, but it is certainly an intriguing one. What if Nintendo and Sony managed to partner up back in the 90s and actually moved forward in the gaming industry together?
Just for the sake of in case you didnt know, back in the early 1990s, Nintendo had tapped Sony to build a CD-Rom variant for the Super Nintendo console. Nintendo then backed out of the deal and went with the company Philips, to develop for them instead. From there, Sony further developed their CD-Rom and the PlayStation was born.
Sony has always been a very different company than Nintendo. From the moment the first PlayStation console dropped, Sony was offering content that was more mature for gamers. Nintendo was and still is considered the more family friendly console.
Sony carved a space for the PlayStation brand in the gaming industry and changed everything. Sega was seemingly pushed out of the console making space and became a third party developer after the Sega Dreamcast failed to make sales needed to keep the company a float.
While Sony and Microsoft battled it out for the market, Nintendo did manage to comeback with the Wii console and of course, dominated sales in regard to handheld devices. Since then, Sony has dominated the market with the PS4 and both Nintendo and Microsoft have managed to stay in the game No pun intended, but it is fitting.
Moving On From Nintendo
In May that year, Sony finally put a stop to negotiations, and whether or not it should retain the project was decided at a pivotal meeting chaired by Ohga on June 24. The great majority of those present opposed it, but Kutaragi nevertheless revealed that he’d been developing a proprietary CD-Rom-based system capable of rendering 3D graphics, specifically for playing video games not multimedia. When Ohga asked what sort of chip it would require, Kutaragi replied that it would need one million gate arrays, a number that made Ohga laugh: Sony’s production of the time could only achieve 100,000. But Kutaragi slyly countered with: “Are you going to sit back and accept what Nintendo did to us?” The reminder enraged Ohga all over again. “There’s no hope of making further progress with a Nintendo compatible 16-bit machine,” he said. “Let’s chart our own course.”
