Step 2. Open the front corners and front edge of your game console by unclipping the top cover.

Step 3. After removing the top parts, you will see two exposing metal plates. Next, remove the screws and open the parts, then lift the battery pack.

Step 4. After done removing all the screws, you can continue by cleaning large outer vents of your PS4 Slim using a small brush as well as compressed air.

Step 5. Now, you need to clean the heatsink. Using the same brush, you can start by deep cleaning the heatsink. You can also use compressed air to help you clean it.

Step 6. Next, you can clean the fan and the blades. For these parts, you can rub the alcohol thoroughly using a cotton swab.

Step 7. Assemble all the parts of the PS4 Slim back to their place, and your PS4 Slim is now clean!

Use A Can Of Compressed Air

A can of compressed air will be very helpful in the cleaning process. Before using it, bear in mind that you need to take extra precautions with it. You need to hold it upright to lessen the possibility of releasing moisture inside the can. Hold the nozzle at least five to six inches from the part that you want to clean. Then blow the compressed air around areas that you would like to clean. Continue blowing for short bursts and gently go through the remaining surfaces of your console.

Is It Safe To Use A Vacuum To Clean Your Ps4

It does not matter what type of PS4 you havethe regular, the Slim, or the Proyou should regularly keep it clean. If your console is incredibly loud or is overheating when you are trying to play your games, it most likely means the fan and the heat sink are working harder than they should be due to grime buildup.

The heat sink is the element in the console that is meant to cool the heat produced inside the PS4s interior. If the heat sink does not work properly:

  • The consoles fan will need to work extra hard to try to keep the console cool
  • The heat sink can stop working if the fan stops working
  • The PS4 can shut down for good if both cooling elements stop working

You can vacuum the interior of a PS4 so that the fan and heat sink work properly. This can prevent the console from overheating during gameplay. Preventing dust from getting inside the console is key, so carefully opening the device and then using a vacuum to clean out dust and dirt will help maintain its performance.

Preventing your PS4 from overheating is as simple as keeping it clean. Otherwise, you will end up having to replace the heatsink and fan, which can be expensive over time. Using a vacuum to intermittently clean the device can help avoid these overheating problems as long you use a vacuum properly and carefully.

Play In Cool Surroundings

Knowing that your console already heats up on its own, playing in hot surroundings wont do it any favors. So, whenever possible, use your PS4 in temperatures lower than 73°F , because anything higher than 82°F will cause it to retain heat and get noisy as a result.

If controlling the temperature of your surroundings is off the table, consider investing in a cooling stand. Something like the OIVO Regular would be a great choice, especially if youre looking for an all-in-one vertical stand that can charge your controllers and cool down your console. It comes with a multifunctional design, so you can use it with all the PS4 consoles .

But while all that is great, what youll really appreciate is that it can reduce console noise by up to 50 decibels.

Clean It With Compressed Air

Ps4 fan cleaning

After performing all the techniques, the dust will still enter the Console through its vents. Without opening the Console, there is still a method to take away the dust. You must use a can of compressed air. Before you do this, you must ensure that the PS4 has been shut down and unplugged from the power source.

You must start the cleaning process by blowing air into the middle indentation of PS4 and all the USB ports. Make sure that you avoid those slots where the discs are inserted. After cleaning the Console with compressed air, do not forget to wipe it with a microfiber cloth.

Using compressed air will result in cleaning all the dust from the vents. It will eventually result in reducing the noise of the fan. But unfortunately, there is no way to clean all the dust from the Console.

You must repeat this method every 2-3 months. It will result in keeping your PS4 in best performance and without any issues.

How To Clean A Ps4 Ps4 Pro Or Ps4 Slim

Knowing how to clean a PS4 can come in handy if it stops working properly or if the fan is too loud. It’s good practice to clean your console before selling your PS4 or giving it away.

The images below are of the PS4 Slim model, but you can follow these instructions to clean any PlayStation 4 console:

  • Make sure your PS4 is turned off and everything is unplugged.

  • Use the compressed air to clean out the USB ports on the front of the console, the ports on the back, and the vents along the device’s side. Gently use a toothbrush or cotton swabs to remove any remaining debris.

Hold the can of compressed air upright and six inches away from the console to prevent moisture from getting into the internal components of your PS4.

  • To remove the outer casing, gently lift under the top cover of the PS4 from the console’s front. Clean off any dust inside the casing with a cloth.

Opening your PS4 will void the warranty. If you purchased your PS4 within the last year, contact Sony PlayStation customer support to report problems with your console.

To open an original PS4 model, you must remove the warranty stickers on the back of the console and use a T8 or T9 Torx screwdriver to remove the screws.

  • Put your finger on the center of the fan to hold it in place, then apply compressed air in short spurts to blow dust out of the fan.

Do not let the fan spin while blowing air on it. A rotating fan can cause an electrical short.

  • Remove The Back Stickers And Screws

Now that you’ve got your PS4 ready to work, turn it around so the back is facing you, then flip it upside-down. You’ll see three stickers along the “top” that you must remove.

Note that if you have the slightly revised model of the original PS4, you’ll only see one sticker and screw here in the middle.

The middle one has a special warranty sticker that damages itself when you remove it. The other two are a bit thicker and might require a bit of extra work to peel off. Use your knife or another pointed tool to peel back a corner of the stickers, then they should come off easily. Be careful not to scratch your system while you remove them.

Set them aside if you want to re-apply them later, or throw them out if you don’t care. Once you’ve removed the stickers, use your TR9 screwdriver to remove the screws underneath. They’re short, so they shouldn’t require much effort. Take care not to strip them, and set them aside in a safe place.

How To Clean The Ps4 Slim And Ps4 Pro

To clean the fan on the PS4 Slim, you don’t need to remove the warranty sticker. It’s much easier to remove the cover, too. All you have to do is pull up on the left and right corners on the front of your system. Pull on the middle, then slide the cover back and it will come right off.

From here, you’ll be able to see the fan even though it’s obstructed by a cover. If your fan doesn’t look too dirty , you can spray some canned air into it and probably call it a day. Remember to use a cotton swab to prevent the fan from spinning.

For full cleaning, you’ll need to remove several screws from the cover and the power supply plate. Since we focused on the original PS4 here, please see the video below for PS4 Slim-specific instructions.

The PS4 Pro is similar, but it’s even simpler. Simply pull up on the front left and right corners to loosen the cover, then slide it back. You can see the fan as soon as you remove this, making basic cleaning quite easy.

Unfortunately, the heat sink is buried deep in the PS4 Pro, and accessing it requires disassembling almost the entire console. Thus, you should stick to just cleaning the fan if you have a PS4 Pro. Check the below video for more details.

  • What Causes The Loud Noises

The fan is a decent size, its diameter is about 85 and the job of this centrifugal fan is basically just like any other fan that is to cool down the console as it starts heating up. Heating up of the console occurs when you have been gaming for several hours in a row. This also depends on the type of game you are playing. If you are playing a game that has heavy graphics, you can expect to hear some loud whirring noise a little early than if you are playing a game with normal range graphics.

It is not dust resistant. Sure, you might use the disc tray and keep it dust free, unless you are a Gen Z and just buy digital copies of your games. Plus, since you can turn the PS4 on and off through the controller, you might not touch the console itself much. That means dust can collect quite easily.

Besides the dust that covers your ps4s outer casing, dust gets inside too, and you can rarely tell something is wrong with your console before your ps4 fan starts making more noise than usual. Ignoring and doing nothing about the problem will only make the problem worse. The dust will continue to pile up on the accumulated dust that is already in and around the fan. This means that the fan has to strain even harder to work and thus makes it louder and noisier.

Fix : Turn Your Ps4 Console To Vertical

Commonly, we place our PS4 console horizontally. If you turn it to vertical, it could probably eliminate some heat and noise of your console. So please give it a shot to see if your PS4 can be cooler and more quiet.

If unfortunately, after the two quick fixes above, your PS4 still keeps loud, lets move on to the clean-out solution. As we mentioned above, your loud PS4 fan is probably caused by the full-of dust itself. So you need to clean out your PS4 fan in order to quiet it.

    Purchase A Ps4 Dust Cover

    PS4 Slim Fan Cleaning

After cleaning my ps4, the first preventive measure I undertook to ensure that I wont ever have to deal with a dusty gaming console was to purchase a dust cover.

One of the dust covers I recommend is Playstation 4 Dust Cover by Foamy Lizard Store.

The cover will protect your gadget from different things such as:

    • Scratches
    • UV
    • Pet fur

Its specifically designed to fit a ps4 console in the horizontal position, as well as a vertical ps4 position as well.

Just make sure to take off the cover when gaming and put it back on when the PlayStation is not in use.

Set Up Your Cleaning Area Before Attempting To Vacuum The Ps4

Before you begin vacuuming your PS4, you will want to set up the area. You want to make sure you are vacuuming your PS4 in an open area away from clutter. In addition, you should back up all of your PS4 data to external memory just in case something catastrophic were to happen during the vacuuming process.

    • Fully shut down and unplug your PS4 from its power source
    • Place your PS4 in a clean and cool area
    • Elevate your PS4 on a hard surface above the floor and away from the wall
    • Wipe off the exterior to ensure no dust or dirt goes inside the PS4 when you open the casing.

When elevating your PS4 for cleaning, you should put it on a hard surface like a desk or entertainment center. These are ideal spots for vacuuming. Clear off the area so the vacuum can suck in more dust. It will work better when the PS4 is not surrounded by clutter. Never clean your PS4 on the carpet.

How To Clean A Ps4 Controller

If your controller is behaving finicky, make sure it is properly synced with the PS4. If you’re still having problems, try cleaning it.

Disconnect any cables and blow compressed air over the controller. Be sure to get the crevices around the buttons, analog sticks, and ports, then wipe down the controller’s face with a dry microfiber cloth. Use a damp cloth if necessary, but be careful to avoid the charger ports or headphone jack. Allow the controller to dry before plugging anything into the ports.

If cleaning the controller doesn’t fix your problems, try resetting your PS4 controller.

What Causes A Ps4 Fan To Get So Loud

As mentioned earlier, the problem with your PS4 is not from some random interior component. Instead, its the centrifugal fan thats causing all the noise.

The fan is about 85 diameters, so its a decent size. The job of the centrifugal fan is to cool down the console as it starts heating up. This can occur when you use the console for several hours at a clip. If youre playing a graphics-heavy game, you can also expect to hear that worrisome loud whirring sound.

As handy as the centrifugal fan is, its not impervious to dust buildup. If youve owned your PS4 for more than a few months, then dust is going to accumulate on the console. Sure, you may use the disc tray and keep that free of dust, unless youre ultra-modern and just buy digital copies of your games. Since you can turn the PS4 on and off via the controller, you might not touch the console itself much. That means dust can accumulate quite easily.

Theres more than just the dust that coats your PS4s outer casing. Dust gets inside, too, unbeknownst to you. In fact, you can rarely tell something is wrong before your PlayStations fan begins running more audibly than it once did.

Now that youre aware of the risks of a loudly-running PS4 fan, you have to do something about it before you cause possible irreparable damage to your console.

    • Make sure the console is not narrow. If you are too close to walls, it can impede the circulation of air.
    • Easier dust settles and the console will overheat faster. It doesn’t matter if your PS4 is standing upright or lying down.
    • Generally, you should try to keep the Area around your PlayStation 4 around dust-free as possible. This reduces the Chance that this is drawn in from the console.
