What The Heck Is Upnp
UPnP or Universal Plug N Play feature on a Router lets your device seamlessly connect to your network without any further configuration. It opens the necessary ports for you and closes it when no longer used.
So this would be very helpful feature especially when you have several Consoles within your LAN or Home Network, accessing the Internet all at the same time.
That being said, UPnP would not always work especially with crappy Router brands and hardwares. But Linux-based and BSD-based software Routers is best for serving UPnP functionalities. If you want to try one of these Software Routers, then or try flashing your Router with DD-WRT, OpenWRT or Tomato.
How to enable UPnP? Enabling this on a DD-WRT Router, you need to go to NAT / QoS Tab. Then UPnP > Tick Enable radio box for UPnP Service, then tick Enable for Clear port forwards on startup, and finally click Save button.
Reboot the router by going to Administration tab, then Management and Reboot router on the bottom of the page.

Nat Type Strict Vs Nat Type 3
Both the NAT Type Strict and NAT Type 3 are bad or undesirable connections, and you would not want to use either option because both connection types mean that your device cannot accept incoming connections. In other words, you can connect to others, and chat or play with other players, but you cannot host.

If you are sitting at Type 2 or Type 1, then you may not have to change it, and your connection issues could be from elsewhere. If youre currently sitting at Type 2, and youve eliminated all other possibilities for why your connection is spotty or disconnecting frequently, then go ahead and change your NAT type. That being said, anyone sitting at Type 1 or 2, changing your NAT type may not be the thing that fixes your issues, so only proceed if you strongly feel like this will fix any issues youre currently facing.

If you have tried literally all these steps and you still cant get off NAT Type 2 or 3, and your ISP cant help, then its more a case of taking other steps to make sure you have the best possible connection between your games console and your router through other means, to give yourself the best chance of gaming smoothly at least some of the time.
Here are some other ways you can give yourself the best connection for online gaming aside from trying port forwarding/DMZ:
1. Use Wired Connections This is perhaps the most crucial factor for online gaming always use a wired connection whenever possible for online gaming, and stay away from using Wi-Fi, especially at distance from the router.
If you cant run a long cable directly to your router, than a powerline adapter is an excellent next best alternative that will give you a good low ping connection even a long way from the router.

3. Use Quality of Service This is another big one if you are gaming on busy or congested home networks. Configuring QoS if available on your router can help deal with any connection issues you may be getting when lots of other people are trying to stream, browse or download on the same connection.

The upcoming PS5 and Xbox X consoles are set to be fully optimized for IPv6 connectivity instead of the older IPv4 protocol that current gen currently uses, and which is the source of so many of these NAT and connection issues.
The IPv6 protocol does not require the use of NAT, and so will not run into any NAT Type issues where gamers cant connect to lobbies or hear each other in parties because they are on different NAT Types.
Under IPv6, the new consoles should simply be able to connect to each other directly over the internet, with no NAT middleman protocol getting in the way and blocking connections. This should greatly reduce these connection problems between gamers.
Therefore, once you are on next gen, you shouldnt need to mess around with DMZ or other settings too much. These consoles should be optimized for the best possible connections right off the bat through IPv6.

Using Dmz Settings To Get Open Nat
OK, so weve explained how Open NAT or NAT Type 1 is the best for PS4 gamers, but whats the easiest way to get on this NAT Type?
The best way to do this is to implement some kind of port forwarding on the PS4, and there are several ways of doing this see our article which covers the different methods of port forwarding.
However, the easiest way of doing this is to simply place your PS4 into the DMZ section of your router, which should automatically forward all ports to your console.
We already covered the quickfire steps for doing this above; lets however go through the steps in full detail for those new to this kind of thing:

Make sure you save the settings, and reboot the router to allow the settings to take effect.

How To Enable Open Nat On Ps4/xbox/pc
The name for an unrestricted NAT when it comes to gaming varies between platforms, but they achieve the same level of NAT openness. Heres a quick rundown:
- Type 1, Type 2, Type 2 PlayStation
- Open, Moderate, Strict Xbox/PC
It turns out that its extremely difficult to get Type 1 on PlayStation, so Type 2 is what Sony recommends and what well be aiming for. For Xbox/PC, achieving an Open NAT is easy.
There are three ways to achieve Type 2/Open NAT. You can manually allow ports, put the console in DMZ mode, or enable UPnP in the router. Demilitarized allows the device to bypass the firewall and talk directly to the internet. For security reasons, we do not recommend enabling UPnP. It allows applications to use the ports without manual intervention. But it also presents a security risk because your device is exposed to external networks.
For example, if UPnP is enabled, malware can use the ports that it wants to communicate with the internet, allowing an attacker to exploit your system and by extension, other devices on the network.

Nat Type Open Vs Nat Type 1
NAT Type Open and NAT Type 1 are not just different in terms of labels but also in functionality. Sony clearly mentions that you need to connect the device directly to the internet to get a NAT Type 1 connection. But in Microsofts case, you do not get any such instructions. On the contrary, Microsofts NAT Type Open can work in both states: with and without a router.
Another distinction is that you can get your Xbox Series X to report a NAT Type Open connection through forwarding ports, setting up DMZ, and making sure that your router is UPnP compliant. But you cannot do the same with your PlayStation 5 because Sony often tends to keep you on NAT Type 2 instead of NAT Type 1 even if you forward ports or set up DMZ.
