Why Doesn’t The Ps5 Have Backwards Compatibility

Why PS4 Doesn’t Have Backwards Compatibility and Xbox One Does. – FULLY EXPLAINED

Unlike Sony, Microsoft offers backwards compatibility with the Xbox One for almost 500 Xbox 360 titles, and the more recent Xbox Series X&S can play games from every Xbox ever released. Even Sony’s PS5 offers backwards compatibility for the PlayStation 4 – though not for anything older. So why wasn’t it included in the PS4?

Sonys Jim Ryan said in a June 2017 interview that while backwards compatibility is much-requested by gamers, its not actually used very often.

“When we’ve dabbled with backwards compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much,” Ryan said, speaking to;Time. “That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games, and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?”

All Ps4 Games That May Exhibit Errors On Ps5

While the vast majority of PS4 games will work on PS5 without any errors, Sony has marked some games on the PlayStation Store with the following warning: “When playing on PS5, this game may exhibit errors or unexpected behaviour and some features available on PS4 may be absent.” It’s important to note that any PS4 games carrying this message will load and be playable on the PS5, but they may exhibit errors like minor graphical glitches or bugs. The full list of all PS4 games that may exhibit errors on PS5 is as follows:

  • A Summer with the Shiba Inu
  • Active Soccer 2 DX
  • WRC 8 FIA World Rally Championship
  • Zero Escape: The Nonary Games

Thus, if you subscribe to PlayStation Now, you can play certain PS3 titles on your PS4 by streaming. At the time of writing, there are around 370 PS3 games available on the service, though the exact number changes as titles are added and removed.

Ps2 To Ps4 No Backwards Compatibility

Part of the reason the PlayStation 2 had backwards compatibility is that it had most of the original PlayStation inside of it. The main processor from the PS1 was used in the PS2 as an input/output processor. The PS2 also had the PS1 sound chip built-in.

Not that it was easy to make backwards compatibility work in the PlayStation 2, according to an article on the subject by Tetsuya Iida and translated by Tom James. Sony wanted backwards compatibility as a unique selling point of the PlayStation 2 since most gaming consoles at the time couldnt play games from older systems.

And yes, the original release of the PlayStation 3 also featured backwards compatibility for PS1 and PS2 games. But later PS3 models lost that backwards compatibilitythey could only play PS1 games via software emulation and no longer supported PS2 games.

As for the PlayStation 4? By the time it rolled out, backwards compatibility with games from older systems in the series was a thing of the past.

So if you want to play PlayStation 2 games on a PlayStation 4, it wont be as easy as it was for PlayStation 2 owners to play PlayStation 1 games. But, its possible! You have optionsas long as youre willing to spend a little money reacquiring those older games.

As it stands, when played on PS5 Lara Crofts isometric offering leaves a lot to be desired, with bevvy of graphical glitches later on in the game.
