Why Is A Microsoft Account Needed To Play Minecraft Crossplay

Minecraft was developed by Mojang Studios and the original Java Edition was released in 2009. This was followed by Bedrock Edition in 2011 and this is the version of the game that is required for crossplay purposes. In 2014, the company was purchased by Microsoft via Microsoft Studios, which is now known as Xbox Game Studios.

Although Mojang is under Microsoft ownership, the company has continued to support a wide range of other systems aside from Xbox and Windows PCs. However, a Microsoft account has been required for several years for those using the Bedrock Edition. This helps to bring all player accounts in line with one another, which is useful for security.

Since Bedrock Edition is required for crossplay, this means the feature is only available if you have a Microsoft account. Until 2021, the Java Edition of the game continued to support Mojang accounts, but this is no longer the case. As a result, even the original Java Edition of the game which does not support crossplay requires a Microsoft account.

Once you’ve connected your Microsoft Account with Minecraft Dungeons, you’re ready to begin playing with friends from other platforms! Since this is all built on a Microsoft Account, playing with friends means knowing their gamertags, or their username with Microsoft and Xbox. You should’ve chosen a gamertag when you created your Microsoft Account for gaming . You can find your friends using their gamertags, and other players can find you by using yours.

To make things even easier, you can search for friends, create and join games, and even invite other players all from within Minecraft Dungeons.

If you’re starting a new game, you’ll see this Friends menu, which lets you toggle between an online and offline game lobby or toggle a private game . Add friends by searching for their gamertags, or join friends who are already in a lobby.

Once you’ve created a game lobby, you can invite friends who are online to join you. Keep in mind, this doesn’t always work, depending on where that friend is playing. Inviting works great to and from Xbox and Windows platforms, but Switch and PS4 can only send invites, not receive them. This means it can be a little trickier to set games up on Switch and PS4.

  • While full cross-play on PlayStation 4 existed previously with Fortnite and Rocket League, Minecraft cross-play is more notable since Microsoft both publishes the game and its own gaming platforms, unlike those other two games.

Key Background: The barriers between gamings three major console developers seem to be dissipating a bit with increasing instances of cross-play between major titles. Sony is even working with Microsoft on game streaming and AI solutions as cloud-based gaming becomes more mainstream. Its an intriguing wrinkle as Sony and Microsoft turn over to their new platforms, the PlayStation 5 and Project Scarlett, next year. Still, dont expect Microsoft to start launching its console-selling exclusives like Halo on PlayStation.

Big Number: Theres a reason games like Fortnite and Minecraft have been able to force Sonys hand. Theyre two of the biggest games in the world, and Minecraft is perhaps the bestselling game ever, with 176 million copies sold.

Multi-platform means that you need to buy the same game twice. This is not an option for people who don’t have enough money or prefer a different platform over another. Cross-platform just requires one set of Minecraft, and then it will work on all platforms.

Minecraft fans who play on PlayStation 4 can now team up with friends on platforms including Xbox One, Microsoft has announced.

A new update will let gamers play the popular block-building title together in shared worlds regardless of whether they are using PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows 10, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android or Gear VR.

PS4 gamers will also be able to access the Minecraft Marketplace, an official, online shop that sells new worlds, skins, mini-games and mash-up packs. Any purchases can be carried across platforms, so buying the Legacy Skin Pack on an Xbox will let gamers use it on a PS4, for example.

The new update applies to the unified Bedrock version of Minecraft and will install automatically and free of charge for PS4 players the next time they start the game. The free update will also never expire and all game purchases after today for PS4 will always be for this new version.

One of Minecrafts core missions is to connect players across devices and provide the best experience regardless of platform, says Helen Chiang, Studio Head of Minecraft. We continue to fulfil that mission here today by welcoming PS4 players to Minecraft on Bedrock and growing our cross-platform multiplayer community.

The news comes just days after Minecraft announced Realms Plus, a new monthly subscription service that lets gamers and up to 10 friends play online together in their own private server.
