PS4 may have been replaced numerically by the PS5, but for the next few years at least you can expect Sonys flagship home consoles to stand side-by-side. While the PS4 is entering its eighth year on the market, its gigantic install base and enormous software library makes it a very relevant purchase in 2021 and potentially beyond.
The system software is still fully functional, and its a cost-effective console with some very low-priced titles. Even more importantly, buying in now is not a problem, as the PS5 is fully backwards compatible and many new games offer free PS4 to PS5 upgrades. This means that when you are, eventually, ready to upgrade, youll be able to bring much of your software with you.
Cross-platform play in major franchises like Call of Duty means that you wont be isolated, and you can even form parties with your friends regardless of which console theyre playing on. Wed steer you away from the PS4 Pro at this point, as the PS5 is a much better option considering the price differential. But if youre still playing on a 1080p television and looking for a cost-effective games console in 2021, the PS4 is an outstanding option.
Ps4 Stock: Availability And Prices
Much like the PS5, it’s hard to come by a PS4 or PS4 Pro right now. Everyone has been buying them up, so you’ll find that many retailers are out of stock, selling used products, or have them priced ridiculously high. If it’s out of stock, some places like Walmart allow you to set up stock alerts to notify when more become available. Others like Amazon sell from third-party sellers, and you’ll need to carefully check their reviews to make sure they’re legitimate. Another option is buying a used or refurbished PS4 Pro from stores like GameStop. As always, be careful when you’re purchasing used products and read up on a retailer’s return policies along with any warranties you receive.
We wouldn’t recommend paying more than $400 or $450 for a PS4 Pro at the moment, and you should only spend around $300 for a regular PS4 if you find one. They simply aren’t worth the increased prices from people trying to capitalize on the market.

Should You Buy A Ps4 In 2021
Looking at all these considerations, is the PS4 worth buying right now? It depends on your situation.
If you want to play a lot of titles that are available on PS4 and don’t have another game console, then the PS4 is still a good buy. The PS4 Pro is more future-proofed, but since its price is close to a PS5, we’d recommend sticking to a PS4 Slim. If you do buy a PS4, consider buying a second-hand model from a reputable seller to bring the cost down.
With a PS4, you can still enjoy cross-play with PS5 players in many games. Plus, you can take most of your games with you when you upgrade to a PS5 .
If you see yourself buying a PS5 in the next year, we’d recommend waiting for that instead. It doesn’t make much sense to spend $300 on a PS4 now, only to spend $500 on a PS5 shortly after. In the meantime, you might consider trying a few games using PS Now on your PC.

If you’re not interested in PlayStation exclusives at all, consider a Nintendo Switch instead. That system is four years old, but it offers a lot for $300. You get a system that you can play at home or on the go with a wide variety of first-party Nintendo titles, plus third-party ports and indie games.
The Switch will likely receive support for longer than the PS4 just keep in mind that it’s not as powerful. As a result, cross-platform games like Doom Eternal and Overwatch are not as smooth on Switch.

That means that, officially, youre still looking at a price point of around £259.99/$299.99 for a brand new unit. From 2017, every PlayStation 4 game has been Pro-enabled. That means these titles, identifiable by a “PS4 Pro Enhanced” badge on the box, will play in 3840 x 2160 and HDR on 4K TVs and could get smoother frame rates on 1080p sets. Sony has patched several older fan favorites, like The Last of Us, Uncharted 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of Mordor, and Infamous: First Light to work in 4K too.
While PS5 titles will not look their best on the older console, some will still be available on the PS4 Pro, with a few offering transferrable save games should you decide to upgrade.
