There does not seem to be anything wrong with PS Plus in particular, as at the time of this writing, the service is not down or anything like that. Its something on the update side thats having trouble recognizing peoples existing subscriptions. But do not try to like, re-sign up for PS Plus or anything like that as a fix, as thats overkill and may only make things worse and more convoluted. Maybe stay clear of PlayStation altogether until this is fully fixed, honestly.
When issues like this happen it reminds us of just how much we rely on online servers, even during say, a solo Elden Ring playthrough. Very few games will let you log in without a PS Plus or equivalent subscription, which results in big problems when something goes wrong on the tech side.

Something weird is going on with the latest PlayStation update which appears to be affecting PS4 and PS5 players trying to access online games. Many players are reporting that this newest update, which your console may try to install today, is telling players that they could not verify PlayStation Plus subscription for their accounts, meaning they cannot log into online-based games like Elden Ring, Call of Duty, Overwatch or others.
PlayStation is aware of this issue and has posted on social media that theyre investigating. In the meantime, there appear to be two main options:
1) Do not install the update. Its possible it already auto-installed, but some of the time you can choose whether or not a system update goes forward. So if you see that option, avoid installing it for now.
2) Ive heard that some people have found success by logging out of their account and logging back in, or hard restarting their systems. This may rectify whatever issue is being triggered by this new update. I heard this as an early fix, but now it may not work as the problem appears to be escalating.
If Sony has a more official statement or fix, I will post that, but for now, these two choices appear to be your best bet depending on if youve already experienced the error or not. I have seen this in the past, but it was usually something that resolved itself shortly, so I would not expect for this to be a long term problem for most players.
You Can Get A Free Trial
You can get a fourteen-day free trial of PlayStation Plus on the PlayStation Store. Some games, and the PlayStation 4 console itself, may also come with a printed PlayStation Plus trial code you can redeem on the Store.
When purchased from Sony, PS Plus costs $10 per month, $25 per three months , or $60 per year . If you know youll want PS Plus for a year, the yearly subscription is the best deal. However, you cant cancel it and get your money back if you change your mind after a few months. Thats the downside.
If you do opt for the free trial, be careful because it will automatically begin charging you for a monthly membership afterwards. You may want to cancel the subscription or switch to a yearly membership rather than pay $10 per month. You can also buy PS Plus time cards at retail stores, although theyll cost the same as a subscription through Sony unless you can find them on sale.

There is actually way to play PlayStation 3 games on the PlayStation 4kind of. Its through Sonys PlayStation Now service, which requires a separate monthly fee. This service actually plays the games on Sonys servers and streams them to you. It gives you access to a separate library of games.

Ps Plus Games Leaving The Service
Like any entertainment subscription, the PS Plus library changes over time and select PS4 or PS5 games will eventually expire. Once they leave the Extra/Premium catalog, you’ll no longer have access to them even if they were previously redeemed. This isn’t the case for monthly PS Plus Essential subscribers, though, and since those games follow a set pattern, this list doesn’t include those.
Instead, we’ve highlighted games planned to leave the catalog for Extra/Premium subscribers. Given the recent relaunch, no games have actually left the new PS Plus service yet, though we’ll keep those noted when this happens. Usually, we’re given advance notice by Sony about removals, meaning you’ll have plenty of time to play them before it happens.

Which Games Can I Play Online Without Ps Plus
Multiplayer games on PlayStation are divided into two different types: Premium games that you buy, and free-to-play games. The former can include titles such as Call of Duty: Vanguard, while the latter includes ongoing games such as Fortnite.
Only free-to-play games can be played online without PlayStation Plus. Thankfully, plenty of the most popular games today, like Genshin Impact, Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Warzone, the aforementioned Fortnite, and more, are all free-to-play. You can access these games so long as you have an internet connection.

Online Storage For Your Save Games
On the PlayStation 4, PS Plus also allows you to use online storage for your save games. Your PS4 automatically uploads your save games to Sonys servers, and you can download that save data on another consoleor the same console, if youve deleted the save games.
This ensures you always have a copy of your save games, even if your PlayStation 4 console dies and needs to be repaired or replaced. Youll find this feature on the Settings > Application Saved Data Management screen. The yellow plus signs next to the Saved Data in Online Storage and Auto-Upload options means these features require PlayStation Plus.
How Do Battlenet Friend Lists Work Now
Blizzard is rolling out a major Battle.net update as part of this switch. All of your friend lists from various regions have been merged into one global list.
That means PC players will no longer have to manually switch regions to play with friends on other continents or countries. So, if youre in the US, youll be able to group up with friends from Europe and Asia without any of you having to change your region.
Theres one exception to this change: China will remain a separate region.

How Do The Free Games Work
Every month, Sony offers several free games to PS Plus subscriberssometimes known as Instant Game Collection games. During the month these games are available, you can choose to buy them for free on the PlayStation 4. You can then download the game for free. You get to keep it, tooyou can download and play it a year from the day you purchase it, if youre a subscriber.
If you dont redeem the game while its free for a month, you dont get it for free. This means you wont get any of the previously free games when you subscribe to PlayStation Plus. It also means that, if you dont download your free games every month, youll miss some and wont get them for free. However, gamers who have been members of PS Plus for a long time may have a library full of hundreds of games they acquired for free.
You can only download and play these free games while you have an active PlayStation Plus subscription. If your subscription lapses, you wont be able to play the games. If you restart your subscription, youll regain access to all those free games you previously acquired and you can play them once again
You can view the current free games for PS Plus subscribers on Sonys website, and a list of games Sony has previously given away on Wikipedia. As of August 2017, youll see quite a few indie games and older big-budget games. Dont expect the latest big-budget games on their release date, although you may see them for free several years after their release dates.

Overwatch Doesnt Offer Cross
Before deciding between any of these platforms, you should consider where your friends are. If most of your friends play on PlayStation 4, that should heavily influence your decision on where to buy and play Overwatch. Its a much better game to play when youre grouped up with friends. You even get extra experience when youre grouped up, which can lead to faster Credits for more skins!
Because Overwatch doesnt support cross-play between the systems, you have to choose one. Blizzard has expressed interest in changing that restriction, but we might have to wait until Overwatch 2. Its quite a lot on the whole, and its not exactly all easy to follow. But after going hands-on with PS Plus Premium over the past few days, my big takeaway is that theres a fair amount to like albeit with some fairly big caveats.
What Will My Username Be
When youre playing games on console, teammates and opponents will see your Battle.net Battletag, not your Gamertag, PSN ID or Nintendo Account username. Your console username will still appear in some situations, including on top 500 leaderboards and friend lists.

As of April 21, 2021, players on Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X no longer need to have an active Xbox Live Gold membership to player Apex Legends, or any free-to-play game for that matter.

Overwatch On Playstation 4 And Xbox One
Overwatch is very similar on both current game consoles. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions both run at 30 frames per second and have the exact same features. The PlayStation 4 Pro and the Xbox One X both increase the frame rate to 60 although Microsofts console apparently dips below that a little more than its competition.
But generally, theyre the exact same game. Both consoles also require a subscription to play online, and since Overwatch is an online game, you to have PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live subscriptions to play. That will set you back $59.99 per year, though you can often find them discounted up to half off if youre patient.
If you really cant decide, go with whichever console has your favorite controller. Theres really no other difference.
