Xbox Vs Playstation: What Are The Differences

At their core, the Xbox and PlayStation are gaming consoles. They allow you to play video games on your TV. They connect to the internet and can stream video apps like Netflix and Hulu. They have media centers and controllers that have changed little over the years.

But the fact that theyre both video game consoles doesnt mean theyre all that similar. From their initial debut, Xbox and PlayStation have been competing for your money with similar-but-different approaches to what a video game console should be.

Xbox and PlayStation are the two leading names in the world of gaming consoles. And while these consoles offer similar services, they do so in very different ways. The Sony PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Xbox One video game consoles offer significant improvements over and break compatibility with the previous generation consoles in their respective families: Sonys PlayStation 3 and Microsofts Xbox 360.

Playstation 5 Price Vs Xbox Series X Price

So, how does the PS5 compare to the Xbox Series X on price? Better than many expected, as it happens.

The Xbox Series X and the full-fat PS5 are identically priced, at £449 / $500 / AU$749.

Both consoles also have a disc drive-less, cheaper sibling: that’s the Xbox Series S and the PS5 Digital Edition. This is where things get really interesting, because the Xbox Series S costs only £250 / $299,/ AU$499, whereas the PS5 Digital Edition is £360 / $400 / AU$599.

That’s a big step up, but it’s worth pointing out that the Xbox Series S is less powerful than the Series X but the PS5 Digital Edition is identical to the standard PS5 except for the lack of a disc drive. In other words, the PS5 Digital Edition is more of a proper next-gen games console than the Xbox Series S.

Playstation 5 Price: Game Bundles

We’re already seeing retailers bundle the PS5 with the most popular titles, including FIFA 22, Marvels Spider-Man Miles Morales, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Call of Duty. Beyond games, we’re also seeing the PS5 bundled with other treats and temptations, such as the excellent Pulse 3D headset. Sony has also unveiled its next-generation VR2 headset for PS5.

Games aside, the PS5 doubles as an entertainment hub. Sony revealed it would come with Netflix, Disney Plus, Apple TV, Spotify, Twitch and YouTube from day one. In November 2021, BBC iPlayer arrived on PS5 in 4K HDR. The PS5 YouTube app has also been upgraded and can now play video in HDR10.

As we previously reported, the PS5 continues to lack both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos but here’s how to get the best picture and sound from your PS5. The company has also hinted at personalised 3D audio in the future.

Dualshock Sixaxis And Dualsense

Survey Among Devs Reveals Much Higher Interest in PS4 Than XB1, But PS ...

Released in 1998, the DualShock controller for the PlayStation succeeded its predecessor, the Dual Analog, and became the longest running series of controllers for the PlayStation brand. In addition to the inputs of the original, digital, controller , the DualShock featured two analog sticks in a similar fashion to the previous Dual Analog controller, which can also be depressed to activate the L3 and R3 buttons.

The DualShock series consists of four controllers: the DualShock which was the fourth controller released for the PlayStation the DualShock 2, the only standard controller released for the PlayStation 2, and the DualShock 3, the second and current controller released for the PlayStation 3, and the DualShock 4, which went through a massive redesign and is the default input of the PlayStation 4, and upon release was compatible with the PS3 originally only via USB and eventually with a firmware update, Bluetooth connectivity was enabled. The Sixaxis was the first official controller for the PlayStation 3, and is based on the same design as the DualShock series .

Initial Announcement And Content Acquisitions

Gates first publicly mentioned the Xbox in an interview in late 1999, stating that he wanted the system “to be the platform of choice for the best and most creative game developers in the world”. It was later announced officially by Gates in a keynote presentation at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose on March 10, 2000, showing off an early prototype build of the system and a series of demos showcasing its hardware. The presentation and the new system were well-received, impressing developers with both the hard drive and the Ethernet port and appealing to them with the notion of easy-to-use development tools.

Microsoft began looking at a series of acquisitions and partnerships to secure content for the console at this time. In early 2000, Sega’s Dreamcast sales were diminishing, in part due to Electronic Arts‘ decision to bypass the console, and Sony’s PlayStation 2 was just going on sale in Japan. Gates was in talks with Sega’s late chairman Isao Okawa about the possibility of Xbox compatibility with Dreamcast games, but negotiations fell apart over whether the Dreamcast’s SegaNet online service should be implemented. Microsoft also looked to acquire Electronic Arts, Nintendo, Square Enix, and Midway without success. The company did achieve success in convincing developers at Bethesda Game Studios and Tecmo about the power of the Xbox over the PS2, lining up The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and Dead or Alive 3 as Xbox console-exclusives.

Xbox One Vs Ps: Still Worth Getting

Given that tracking down PS5 restock or Xbox Series X restock is stupidly tough, at the time of writing, one of the easier ways to get a ‘new’ console is to op for one from the previous generation.

Both the Xbox One and PS4 are still worthy consoles offering gaming at 1080p, though the Xbox One X can hit up to 4K. Furthermore, with a mature library of games, you won’t be short on things to play as you wait for the new Microsoft and Sony consoles to become easier to buy.

Where To Buy Ps5 Accessories

PS5 vs Xbox Series X – The Showdown

Getting hold of PS5 accessories is a whole lot easier than getting hold of a PS5 console. But many of the most popular accessories still flash in and out of stock during busy shopping periods . In other words, it’s best to grab stock while it’s available rather than wait until you secure your console.

Available to order from Sony Direct now, these official PS5 covers add a dash of colour to your console. Colours may vary from one country to another.

Ps5 Vs Xbox Series X: Specs

When it comes to specs, Sony and Microsoft have taken a similar approach, though there’s a few key differences to point out.

The PlayStation 5 is powered by a custom-built version of the third generation AMD Ryzen chipset, packing in eight cores with the company’s new Zen 2 architecture and Navi graphics. The CPU runs at 3.5GHz. The GPU offers 36 compute units running at 2.23GHz and offering 10.28TFLOPs. Those parts are paired with 16GB of GDDR6 with a bandwidth of 448GB/s. It means the PS5 can support features like ray tracing a performance-intensive lighting technique that has previously been reserved to expensive high-end PC GPUs, which we now know has been “built into the GPU hardware” for the PS5.

The PS5 also supports screen resolutions of up to 8K far higher than the standard 1080p HD of most peoples televisions, let alone that of the increasingly popular 4K. It also works at 120Hz refresh rates, allowing for super-smooth movement in games if you have an HDMI 2.1 compliant display. These are incredibly performance-intensive specs, so we wouldnt expect a game to hit these standards regularly , but the PS5 will at least make 4K/60fps a more common sight.

The PS5 also supports immersive, 3D audio when using a headset whilst playing. Sony delivers this audio through its new Tempest Engine, which can handle hundreds of sound sources for a more realistic audio environment. It’s a comparable experience to Dolby Atmos, if you’ve ever used the spatial audio format.

Formation Of Sony Computer Entertainment

At Sony Music Entertainment, Kutaragi worked closely with Shigeo Maruyama, the CEO of Sony Music, and with Akira Sato to form Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. on November 16, 1993. A building block of SCEI was its initial partnership with Sony Music which helped SCEI attract creative talent to the company as well as assist SCEI in manufacturing, marketing and producing discs, something that Sony Music had been doing with Music Discs. The final two key members of SCEI were Terry Tokunaka, the President of SCEI from Sony’s headquarters, and Olaf Olafsson. Olafsson was CEO and president of New York-based Sony Interactive Entertainment which was the parent company for the 1994-founded Sony Computer Entertainment of America .

The PlayStation project, SCEI’s first official project, was finally given the green light by Sony executives in 1993 after a few years of development. Also in 1993, Phil Harrison, who later became President of SCE Worldwide Studios, was recruited into SCEI to attract developers and publishers to produce games for their new PlayStation platform.

Playstation : Sonys Greatest Console

How do you follow up on the wildly successful PlayStation? Well, you release the $299 PlayStation 2, which managed to eclipse the original console in nearly every way. Released in 2000, Sony embraced the multimedia experience by offering support for DVDs. This was a big deal because the PS2 actually became one of the cheaper DVD players on the market at the time.

There was more to the PS2 than DVDs though, as the console also played host to some impressive internals. The so-called Emotion Engine CPU and Graphics Synthesizer GPU required plenty of finesse on the parts of developers as they were powerful but tricky to program.

It wasnt the most powerful console of the era though, as the Microsoft Xbox and Nintendo GameCube often enjoyed better-looking graphics. But studios that put in the time and effort were able to deliver gorgeous games like Gran Turismo 4, Metal Gear Solid 2, Shadow of the Colossus, and the God of War titles. In fact, we got our first taste of HD games during this era, albeit at 1080i like Gran Turismo 4 and Tourist Trophy.

The PS2 dominated its generation by a huge margin, while also offering a ton of games.

Another major feather in the PS2s cap was backward compatibility with PS1 games, which meant you didnt have to abandon your entire collection of older PlayStation games.

Playstation : A Rare Misstep

[REVEALED] When Did The Original Xbox Come Out?

Flush with success after the PS1 and PS2, Sony had all the confidence in the world when it revealed the PS3. Or was it arrogance? Judging by its infamous E3 2006 press conference, wed go with the latter.

The PS3 was filled to the brim with exotic and/or cutting-edge tech at launch, such as a purpose-built Cell processor, Nvidia RSX GPU, and a Blu-ray drive. And this was Sonys first console designed with HD from the get-go, supporting an HDMI output and 1080p resolution. The company even offered support for PS2 games by including the PS2s hardware in the new console.

All of this tech came at a price though, and the announcement of a $499 price tag for the base 20GB variant at E3 2006 drew gasps from the crowd in attendance. PlayStation godfather Ken Kutaragi would double down on the decision by insisting that people would want to work more hours in order to be able to buy the new console. Sheesh.

Unfortunately for Sony, the first year and a bit of release was a disappointment due to both the price and the somewhat barren game library. This period even saw the spawning of the PS3 has no games meme, owing to the drought of titles in the early going.

The PS3 got off to an awful start due to a high price and complex architecture. It didn’t help that executives like Ken Kutaragi seemed incredibly arrogant at the time.

An Xbox Console Retrospective

Before the original Xbox was released in 2001, many doubted Microsoft’s chances to compete in the video game console business. Up until that point, the company had been primarily a PC software vendor, and there hadn’t been room for four major consoles. It also had to compete against the PlayStation 2 and GameCube at the time. Despite the initial stiff competition and several pitfalls along the way, the Xbox brand has made significant strides over the past 15 years to become a household name in the hardware world and a significant pillar of Microsoft’s business. It has since sold well over 100 million consoles.

Let’s take a walk down memory lane as we chronologically look back at all of Microsoft’s consoles, hardware redesigns, and major peripherals.

Xbox One Vs Ps: Hardware

Power On: The Story of Xbox | Chapter 1: The Renegades

The PS4 Slim and Xbox One S are both impressively sleek, offering attractive designs that look great under a TV and can fit into a backpack without a problem. The newest PS4 has a slight edge in terms of sheer smallness, though it lacks an optical input for high-end gaming headsets.

Sony’s 4K-ready PS4 Pro has a chunkier, hamburger-like design, while the Xbox One X, which is even more powerful than the Pro, is somehow slimmer than the Xbox One S.

Both consoles start with 500GB of storage that you can easily expand by connecting one of the best external hard drives for PS4 and Xbox One. PS4 owners also have the option of opening up their consoles to swap in a new 2.5-inch or SATA drive.

Each controller has its perks the Xbox One pad has textured grips and can be customized via the Xbox Design Lab, while Sony’s DualShock 4 is highly ergonomic and has a touchpad and reactive lightbar. The PS4 controller is the only one that supports micro USB charging right out of the box Xbox One owners will need to rely on AA batteries or buy a $25 charging kit.

Thanks to the $299 PlayStation VR headset, PS4 is the only of the two consoles to currently support virtual reality. The PSVR’s game lineup has grown quite compelling over the years, too, headlined by such major titles as Tetris Effect, Resident Evil 7, Astro Bot: Rescue Mission and Moss.

There’s currently no equivalent for Xbox One, and it doesn’t look like Microsoft plans to bring VR to Xbox anytime soon.
