Select A Portable Storage Drive

If you have a portable HDD or SSD drive around your house, you may skip to the next step. Otherwise, were checking the requirements.

Thankfully, the PS4 doesnt ask for much. You can use almost any external storage drive, as long as it meets these specs:

• It must have SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps to 20Gbps. It means any USB 3.0, USB 3.1, or USB 3.2 drive will work. USB 2.0 or below wont work properly.
• The storage space can range from 250GB to 8TB of space.
• You can use single external storage on the PS4 at a time.
• You cant use the extended storage with a USB hub.

That said, external HDD drives are cheap and reliable. You can get 4TB extra storage for less than two AAA games. And the drive will last for years.

When using exFAT on a storage device, the PlayStation 4 cant use it as a true extension of its internal drive. This means that you cant install games or apps on it unless you reformat it with PS4s proprietary External Storage format. Theres no point in connecting an external USB drive formatted on your PS4 using Sonys proprietary and encrypted format to your PC. It will appear as RAW. Your computer wont know how to handle Sonys format. You can only format it as if it were a new drive to reuse it on your PC.

Any attempt at recovering data stored on an encrypted PS4 drive can only be performed through the options available when its directly connected to your PlayStation 4.

Transfer Data Via The Internet

The PS5 offers something called Data Transfer, which, as the name suggests, lets you transfer all data from your old console to your new one. This is done via an internet connection, and you can either complete the whole thing wirelessly or by using ethernet cables.
