A Rift Between Generations
Even though “Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart” won’t be on PlayStation 4, the well-received Ratchet & Clank from 2016, a remake of the series’ first entry, is still a worthy entry in the series. With an 85 on Metacritic, the game received praise for its refined presentation and mechanics in its evolution of the series. As Gaming Age‘s Matthew Pollesel said, “Insomniac knows what makes these games work, and they realized that they didn’t need to overhaul them from the ground up to make them work on a new system, too.”
Ultimately, the newest game’s exclusivity may also provide incentive for PS4 owners to finally make the jump to PS5. The “Ratchet & Clank” franchise isn’t alone in this endeavor. Only PS5 owners have access to games like the remake of “Demon’s Souls” and “Returnal.” As time goes on, as with all console cycles, this list will likely grow over time.
Will The Ratchet And Clank: Rift Apart Demo Be Playable On Ps5
Sony has NOT confirmed if there will be a Ratchet And Clank: Rift Apart demo on PS5, so perhaps we shouldn’t hold our breath for one.
Again, you could argue that putting out a free demo for Ratchet And Clank: Rift Apart wouldn’t be in Sony’s best interest. Surely the company would rather get players to buy the game before they try it?
Unless a Rift Apart demo is announced, we’ll just have to make do with Astro’s Playroom, a sequel to Astro Bot, which Sony is bundling in for free with every PS5 console bought. It’s a cute little game which will explain all the new features that the PS5 has, such as the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
It may not have the mass appeal of a Rift Apart demo, but Astro’s Playroom is a pretty cool thing for day-one adopters of the PS5 to enjoy!

The Likely Reason For Exclusivity
The short answer: No, “Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart” won’t get a PS4 release. The reason for the game’s exclusivity is unclear, though an official PlayStation Blog post does contain some indicators as to why it won’t be on PlayStation 4.
First, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart developer Insomniac Games’ creative director Marcus Smith explains within the post that the game “is a showpiece game and exclusive for your PlayStation 5 console,” suggesting the game is demanding from a technical perspective.
Secondly, Smith also describes some pre-order bonuses featuring technical details that wouldn’t be possible on the PlayStation 4. Specifically, pre-ordering the digital Standard or Deluxe Edition of the game will unlock some in-game content early on, including the Carbonox armor from Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando and Ratchet & Clank‘s retro-blaster. The former is said to be “updated with high-definition materials, lighting responses, and ray-traced reflections” while the latter has been “updated visually for the PS5 console.”
In short, it seems very likely that game is designed with PS5 specs in mind.

Will The Ratchet And Clank: Rift Apart Demo Come To Ps4
As of right now, Sony has NOT announced any plans to make the Ratchet And Clank: Rift Apart demo playable on PS4. And you could argue that it would be counterintuitive for Sony to do that.
After all, Rift Apart seems to be heading exclusively to PS5, and it will show off the SSD technology in the console. This cool tech will allow Ratchet and Clank to jump between worlds in an instant, which simply wouldn’t be possible on the PS4’s limited-by-comparison hardware.
And so, you could argue that a Ratchet And Clank: Rift Apart demo that runs on PS4 could not actually do justice to the full game on PS5.

Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart is not on PS4.
The game is not coming to PS4, meaning Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart will only be on PS5 when it launches on June 11th.
This was confirmed by Insomnic Games on Twitter in Novemeber 2020, and the game is also only listed for next-gen on the PSN store.
As for why its not coming to last-gen, Insomniac Games have said that the game would not have been possible without the PS5s faster loading times.
This is because the game is said to take full advantage of the PS5s screamingly fast SSD to build worlds and project players from one place to another in instantaneous speeds.

This is different to Horizon Forbidden West which didnt limit development thanks to being on PS4 while benefiting from visual improvements on PS5.

The answer if no, unfortunately. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has no co-op or multiplayer features whatsoever. … The bad news is that developer Insomniac Games has no plans to add multiplayer either. It was built from the ground up for PS5 as a single-player experience, and that’s how it’s likely to stay.
Sony Exclusives That Will Be On Ps4 And Ps5
Horizon Forbidden West is confirmed to be coming to both PS4 and PS5.
Sonys website has Horizon Forbidden West listed for both consoles, and the title is slated to come out in 2021.
However, know that a release this year isnt fully guaranteed. The game is targeted for the holiday season, but head of PlayStation Studios, Herman Hulst, has said this isnt quite certain yet.
As for why the game is coming out on last-gen also, the games director, Mathijs de Jonge, told Game Informer that a lot of the development occured on PS4.
He also told Hardware Zone that the PS4 development wasnt limiting in any way, and that the PS5 version simply benefits from better graphics as well as dualsense features and quicker loading times.
While Horizon Forbidden West is targeting the holiday season, God of War Ragnarok has been delayed to 2022.

- The adaptive trigger can be used to enable secondary fire with weapons. The Enforcer can fire one shot by half-pulling the trigger until you feel a bit of resistance, before then pulling it all the way to fire the second.
- This is a canonical continuation of Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus, but can be treated as a standalone game.
- There are more dimensional rift abilities that havent been shown.
- The fast-paced dimension hopping will be reserved for when you chase after Doctor Nefarious.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will launch exclusively on PS5 on June 11th, 2021. Having recently gone gold, fans can start pre-loading the game from June 4th.

Is Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Coming To Ps4
While 2016’s Ratchet & Clank found massive success on PS4, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was designed from the ground up to be a PS5 exclusive, and will not be coming to PS4.
Rift Apart takes full advantage of the PS5’s powerful SSD to render entire worlds in the blink of an eye, a feat of technical prowess not possible on the PS4’s HDD.
As Rift Apart concerns itself with multiple dimensions, and gameplay features Ratchet & Clank literally jumping through portals into wholly new world mid-combat, the experience on PS4 would be vastly different, and inferior.
Could you imagine needing to sit through a load screen, mid-combat, perhaps multiple times in specific encounters? It just wouldn’t work and wasn’t a part of Insomniac’s vision of the game.
While some other first-party titles announced for PS5 will also be releasing for the PS4, like Horizon: Forbidden West and the next God of War, Ratchet & Clank specifically takes advantage of the PS5 hardware in ways that the PS4 couldn’t hope to replicate.
While this may be disappointing news to some, Sony does have to find ways to entice players over to their next-generation console, don’t they?
Ratchet And Clank: Rift Apart On Ps5
In the wake of Sony announcing that key first-party titles are being developed to straddle the PS4 and PS5 console generations, the arrival of Insomniac’s Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is timely. It demonstrates the power and the potential of PlayStation 5 in a way that a cross-gen title would not be able to – and it showcases what the next generation of hardware can deliver when a first party developer can focus exclusively on it. Insomniac’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales was an exceptional PS4/PS5 effort – but Rift Apart highlights what’s possible when a generational leap in storage, CPU and GPU are expertly deployed. Oh, and 60fps with ray tracing? No problem.
We’ve all seen the trailers, right? Beyond the beautiful, dense visuals, the fast SSD allows seamless transitions between completely different worlds – a signature gameplay feature of the new game, while saturating the GPU with an astonishing level of detail. RDNA 2’s ray tracing features are also deployed, with beautiful high resolution reflection work. Well, the good news is that the final game is actually better than the trailers. In fact, we were surprised to see that the day one patch – which actually ‘dropped’ last Saturday – actually improved quality still further.

Hunt Down Those Collectibles
Dont waste hours scouring each map for hidden collectables. The Map-O-Matic, given as a reward for finishing the pirate gauntlet side quest automatically shows you all of these aforementioned items. Most of these will soft reset on your Challenge Mode run, and collecting them nets you extra bolts as a reward the second time.
Armor up
You dont need to actually equip armor sets to get their passive benefits, and collecting each additional piece of the set doubles the effects from 5% with one, to 10% with two, and 20% with all three.
To help make gains in Challenge Mode as productive as possible, seek out the Carbonox Advanced , Lombax Praetorian and Captain Starshield before starting the new run so they carry over and youre banking extra rewards from the start.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Gameplay
The action platformer will revolve around the titular heroes as they take on Doctor Nefarious and his evil plan of exploiting a catastrophic dimensional collapse, which has been caused by a malfunctioning Dimensionator. It is an artifact that can open up rifts into other dimensions.
Making full use of the PS5’s new SSD, Ratchet can zip through these rifts and seamlessly transfer from one dimension to another without any loading time. This time around, players will also get to play as Rivet, a female lombax from another dimension.
The Ratchet & Clank series is known for its hilariously over-the-top weapons, like the Pixelizer, and well-scripted storylines. While the gameplay may appear easy and childish, the game can get overwhelming if you simply rely on going in all guns blazing with no focus on strategy.

Will Ratchet And Clank: Rift Apart Be On Ps4
As mentioned, stock levels for the PS5 have not been as high as many would have hoped and while it was fully expected that the console would be fully available now in most places, that has turned out to not be the case and many could still be struggling to get their hands on one into 2022.
Ratchet and Clank being such a popular Sony franchise has led to many calling for the game to get a PS4 debut too so that those who have been unable to get the latest console can still play it. But with the game being marketed as a PS5 exclusive, that seemed unlikely and if you were hoping that was set to change then, unfortunately, we would not advise getting your hopes up.
It has been very clearly stated now that there are no plans for the game to get a PS4 release and that there have not been any discussions about that changing – so it’s PS5 or nothing if you want to play Rift Apart.
The exact reasoning for this has not been made clear but we imagine that, given the fact that this has been designed for the PS5 and is supposedly a game meant to show off the immense power that the console has, it simply would not run nearly well enough on the PS4 to make a release a possibility.

Rift Apart includes the series first-ever photo mode, and after Insomniacs great work with this option in the Spider-Man games its an excellent addition, especially given how beautiful these worlds are. I actually didnt spend a ton of time with it during my initial playthrough, but that was largely because I knew if I did I may never get around to actually playing. Rift Apart offers beautiful photo op after beautiful photo op, and the customization options including changing out armor pieces, adding in light sources, and other standard features makes it one of the most robust photo modes out there.
The art direction at large allows the impressive level of detail to remain surprising throughout, thanks to the variety of worlds youll explore. Yes, some interiors will share similar metallic, futuristic vibes, and gameplay-relevant surfaces like spots for your gravity boots to stick to will repeat so that theyre instantly recognizable no matter where you go. But every world has its own visual identity thats a treat to discover, offering different tones, geography, and ensembles of memorable characters.
