Regardless of whether or not youre a dedicated Sony aficionado or just have a passing interest in PS-related swag, you have to admit that the PlayStation Empire has in fact, changed or affected the world at large in many ways. Most obviously, those closely connected to the world of gaming have seen the word PlayStation become synonymous with video gaming itself. By contrast, before the first PlayStation console was introduced, Nintendo was on top and the obvious example of what interactive entertainment stood for. When the original PSX came onto the scene however, all bets were off, it heralded the arrival of an entirely new era of gaming.

Sony Playstation Targets Living Rooms
Sony entered the video game market with a different strategy than Nintendo and Sega: It wanted to take over the living room.
Ironically, Sony had sought a deal with Nintendo to create a new Super Nintendo with a CD drive that would play games and music discs. When Nintendo spurned Sony, the electronics company opted to go it alone.
Ken Kutaragi, known as the father of the PlayStation, wanted to take video games from “a flat 2D environment” into “360-degree ‘space’,” he told USA TODAY in 2015. That goal to “develop and adopt state-of-the-art technology that is forward-looking for a gaming console” was meant to change the image of video games from that of toys to high-end entertainment.
The first PlayStation would play CDs, the PS2 played DVDs and the PlayStation 3, launched in 2006, played all of those discs and new high resolution movies on Blu-ray discs, a format developed by Sony along with other electronics companies, including Panasonic, Pioneer, LG and Samsung.
“Sony, given its background in consumer electronics and physical media distribution, was able to position the console as a DVD player early on, and a Blu-Ray player as well,” said P. J. McNealy, an analyst and consultant at Digital World Research.

Sony Enters The Arena
Sony’s first foray into the gaming market came in 1988, when it embarked on a deal with Nintendo to develop a CD-ROM drive for the Super NES, not scheduled to be released for another 18 months. This was Sony’s chance to finally get involved in the home videogame market. What better way to enter that arena than on the coat-tails of the world’s biggest gaming company?
Using the same Super Disc technology as the proposed SNES drive, Sony began development on what was to eventually become the PlayStaion. Initially called the Super Disc, it was supposed to be able to play both SNES cartridges and CD-ROMs, of which Sony was to be the “sole worldwide licenser,” as stated in the contract. Nintendo was now to be at the mercy of Sony, who could manufacture their own CDs, play SNES carts, and play Sony CDs. Needless to say, Nintendo began to get worried.
Playstation 3 Super Slim
The PlayStation 3 super slim, released in September 2012, marked the first time Sony made a second design revision to one of its mainline consoles.
Here, Sony removed the front slot-loading disc tray. In its place, the chassis was redesigned to incorporate a sliding lid that covered the optical drive, which had to be accessed from the top of the console. Not only was the console slimmer than the previous model, but at 4.3 pounds, it was also three pounds lighter.

Playstation: Tekken It To Nintendo
The first PlayStation was originally conceived as a result of a 1991 partnership between it and industry bigwig Nintendo. The house of Mario wanted to release a CD-based add-on console for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System at the time, and enlisted Sony to develop the machine.
Nintendo took Sony by surprise when it announced a partnership with Philips for an add-on instead at the 1991 CES expo. Sony wasnt keen to ditch all its work that went into the machine and therefore chose to launch a standalone PlayStation in 1994. The $299 price tag in the US also undercut Segas Saturn by a considerable $100, with Sony infamously announcing this price at E3 1995.
The PS1 was among the first wave of consoles capable of delivering 3D visuals, while also being arguably the first CD-based console to really gain widespread, global popularity. This differed from its arch rivals offering, the Nintendo 64, which still used cartridges. CDs had much slower loading times than cartridges but offered 700MB of data compared to the maximum of 64MB of storage seen on later N64 games. This allowed PS1 developers to cram tons of in-game content, plenty of hours of audio tracks/voice acting, and loads of video content into their games. In fact, it wasnt uncommon to see N64 ports of PS1 games like Tony Hawks Pro Skater lacking music tracks, more voice acting, and/or videos.

“Subscriptions will enable new offerings for consumers who might find spending $300-$500 on a console challenging given the economic environment,” McNealy said.

- Sony originally demonstrated the ability to use a PSP as a rearview mirror in an F1 racing game for the PS3, but this feature never made it into a commercial game.

Havent We Learned This Lesson
In 2011 in Japan , Sony released the most powerful handheld system on the market, the PlayStation Vita. Unfortunately, all of this power was wasted as the system was considered one of Sonys greatest failures. The system does have a small, passionate fan base and a lot of great games from third-party developers. However, the Vita had too many issues that kept it from taking off.
The Vita offered a superior gaming experience but the rise of smartphones and mobile gaming was a leading cause to this failure. Consumers just didnt need a handheld gaming device in a world where they had games at their fingertips in an instant. Nintendo didnt seem to mind the competition as their 3DS system did well despite the surge in smartphone purchases.
Price yet again became a downfall that Sony didnt see coming. The initial launch price of the PSVita was $250. Compared to a relatively cheaper 3DS, most gamers looking for a mobile experience decided to go in favor of Nintendo. Anyone else looking for a high definition gaming experience probably went with either a PS3 or XBOX 360, considering they were only $50 more. With a high starting price, the Vita continued to thin wallets by not being compatible with cheaper SD cards. With no built in hard drive and no other compatible memory solutions, consumers were forced to fork up almost $100 for extra storage.

Formation Of Sony Computer Entertainment
At Sony Music Entertainment, Kutaragi worked closely with Shigeo Maruyama, the CEO of Sony Music, and with Akira Sato to form Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. on November 16, 1993. A building block of SCEI was its initial partnership with Sony Music which helped SCEI attract creative talent to the company as well as assist SCEI in manufacturing, marketing and producing discs, something that Sony Music had been doing with Music Discs. The final two key members of SCEI were Terry Tokunaka, the President of SCEI from Sony’s headquarters, and Olaf Olafsson. Olafsson was CEO and president of New York-based Sony Interactive Entertainment which was the parent company for the 1994-founded Sony Computer Entertainment of America .
The PlayStation project, SCEI’s first official project, was finally given the green light by Sony executives in 1993 after a few years of development. Also in 1993, Phil Harrison, who later became President of SCE Worldwide Studios, was recruited into SCEI to attract developers and publishers to produce games for their new PlayStation platform.

History Of Playstation 2
The PlayStation 2 was announced in 1999 and released in Japan on March 4, 2000, in North America on October 26, 2000. While the PS2 had online support, it was severely limited when compared to Xbox Onlines service. You had to buy a PlayStation 2 Network Adaptor and use dial-up or broadband internet to connect to your game which ran on on third-party servers. Eventually, Sony released the PS2 Slim in 2004, which included networking ports on the console. Games like Burnout 3: Takedown, Call of Duty 3, Resident Evil Outbreak, Socom 2 U.S. Navy Seals, and Twisted Metal: Black Online were popular using the online capabilities of the time.

Playstation Portable: Taking On The King
Between the PS2 and PS3 launches, Sony decided to launch the first handheld in PlayStation history with the PlayStation Portable back in 2004. Unlike Nintendo and its conservative approach to handheld power, Sony took the brute-force approach with the PSP by offering a processor that was closer to the Dreamcast and PS2. This resulted in many ports of contemporary home console titles.
The PSP also delivered features like Sonys Memory Card Pro Duo format for storage, a built-in web browser, and a large LCD screen. Toss in multimedia playback functionality and Wi-Fi, and you had a feature-packed handheld for the time.
Sony used the so-called UMD format for games, which was essentially a mini-disc. The upside was this offered almost 2GB of storage space, but the downside was that loading times were absolutely horrible.
