Were a little over a month away from the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X going on sale, but 2K Sports is giving us a peek at what next-gen basketball will really look like. In a follow-up to its sweaty Zion Williamson preview from this summer, a new two-minute trailer flies around some game action to show how players are rendered in more detail than ever, as well the games improved animation systems and physics.
One detail that stands out in our current era is that this is the only way youll see basketball played in crowded stadiums. According to 2K, the arena contains more than 150 unique AI-driven characters interacting seamlessly in the lower bowl alone. A shot following Luka Doncic as he walks onto the court shows spectators with as much detail and liveliness as were used to seeing in the games athletes. The game also includes a Rail Cam angle mimicking what weve seen from action in the bubble restart that pulls you in closer to the court than ever before.
What we dont know about yet is how the gameplay will change, but more information on that will come in the form of three Courtside Reports that cover core gameplay, new movement and the “Impact Engine,” as well as next-gen AI and major changes to the MyPLAYER Builder. In the following weeks the drip feed should reveal info about WNBA, MyCareer and improvements to the Neighborhood mode.

K Games Bundles Current
2K Games is monetizing cross-gen access by charging $100 for something that EA and CD Projekt RED give away for free.
Today 2K Games formally announced NBA 2K21 and confirmed the game will be $69.99 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles. In a bid to test the limits of the new generation and kick off an industry-wide price hike, the publisher is pricing next-gen optimizations at a premium while also clearly delineating current- and next-gen SKUs of the game.
The publisher is also charging extra for cross-generation access. Gamers who want to play NBA 2K21 on both current-gen and next-gen consoles have two options: buy each game separately, or purchase the $100 Mamba Forever Edition, which gives you a copy of the game on both platforms.
This is a stark contrast to other initiatives like EA’s Dual Entitlement program for FIFA 21 and Madden 21, which gives current-gen buyers free access to next-gen ports for a limited time, and also defies Microsoft’s Smart Delivery initiative.
Other developers like CD Projekt RED are giving away next-gen copies of their game away for free in perpetuity.
“NBA 2K21 Mamba Forever Edition will be available for $99.99 for both current and next-generation platforms. It includes dual-access where purchasing Mamba Forever Edition on either current or next-generation platforms provides a copy of the standard edition game on the other generation at no additional cost, within the same console family,” reads a press release.

To try and give myself a different experience with the game, I took the G League route and I didnt regret it. The story was actually pretty good! Best one in years, in my opinion. And it was great to see some of the older casts of 2k main characters return
One thing that has annoyed me to no end, though, is the fact that I have to be in Rookieville before I can go out and experience the city. You have to have a Rep level of Pro 1 before you escape Rookievilles clutches, which means you have to play park games. And, let me tell you, I hate Park games. I felt the storyline offered in the last-gen version of MyCareer was pretty tired and nothing we havent seen before, but next-gen 2K21 gives you options. You can opt to play a full four years in college and continually develop your player before hitting the league, should you choose to do so, but I highly recommend taking the G League path. 2K did a great job creating a fun G League storyline that honestly might be my favorite in the franchises history, while adding in some gameplay twists and goals to keep things interesting.

This week, 2K gave us our first look at NBA 2K21 on next-gen consoles. A gameplay video was released with footage captured on the PlayStation 5 and, wow, did it look stunning. The facial animations looked lifelike and the dribbling and shooting looked smooth and fluid. Lets just say, NBA 2K21 definitely made quite a leap from the curren-gen version to the next-gen version.
Which begs the question, if you purchased NBA 2K21 on the current-gen PlayStation 4, how do you upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version? Unfortunately, while some publishers are offering free upgrades between console generations, 2K is not doing so with NBA 2K21.
That means if you purchased the standard edition of NBA 2K21 on PS4 for $59.99, youll have to pay full price to upgrade to the PS5 version which, as we previously learned, will cost $69.99. Theres no simple $10 upgrade option where you pay the difference in each versions price.
That said, there was one option, the Mamba Forever Edition, that provides dual-access to both versions of NBA 2K21, allowing a seamless transition between consoles in the same family. However, this was priced at $99.99, so you were still paying quite a bit.

No, NBA 2K21 is not cross-platform compatible. This means that if you want to play against someone who has a different platform from your own, you won’t be able to. You will need to find another player with the same platform as yours.
However, if you are using Steam and have an Epic Games Store account, then this does not apply because these two systems are cross-platform. For example, if you are a PC player who uses Steam and your friend uses the Epic Games Store, then you can play with each other online.

The elimination of loading times is pretty mind-blowing. The game starts up incredibly quickly, and you can get from your PS5 home menu onto the court in no time at all. Everything is so quick, in fact, that I find myself annoyed whenever theres a timeout called in a MyCareer game and I have to wait a few seconds before advancing.
The feel of the PS5 controller is also incredible. The adaptive triggers and haptic feedback are something you just dont want to do without once youve tried it, and in my opinion will give multiplatform games on PS5 a considerable edge over the Series S|X versions if developers take advantage of the tech. I finally got the opportunity to play NBA 2K21 on both next-gen versions, and Ive come to a pretty decided conclusion: The PS5 offers the premier NBA 2K21 experience.
To put it plainly, it all comes down to the controller.
While the Xbox Series X is technically the most powerful next-gen console, NBA 2K21 isnt built to take advantage of the Xs areas of superiority. Perhaps future versions will help Microsoft flex its hardwares more developed CPU and GPU muscle, but the first iteration of NBA 2K on next-gen has the two consoles functioning on mostly an even playing field.

First, the feel of stick commands offer what Ive been describing as a cushioned firmness that has to be felt to be fully appreciated. It makes all of the dribble moves feel silky smooth.
The Xbox controllersat least the standard ones that come with both the Series X and Sare more clanky and dont give back the same feeling during most of the commands. Dont get me wrong. I loved the Xbox experience. Its what I based my review on with the next-gen version of the game.
However, after playing the game on PS5, Ive found a few things to appreciate that werent present with the Xbox Series S or X.

The publisher confirmed the release dates for the upcoming next-gen consoles on the NBA 2K21 Twitter account. The sports game will release alongside the Xbox Series X and S globally when the consoles are released on November 10. Similarly, it will be available on November 12 and 19 for the PS5, according to its regional launch dates.
