Don't Miss

Use The Correct File System On Your Usb Drive

How To Format USB to Fat32 (PS4 Tutorial)

RELATED:What’s the Difference Between FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS?

So you have the right filesnow its time to get them to your PlayStation. To get started, plug a USB drive into your computer. The drive must be formatted with either the exFAT or FAT32 file system, as the PlayStation 4 cant read NTFS. If your drive is formatted with the NTFS file system, youll see an error after you connect it to the PlayStation 4. It just wont appear or be usable.

To double-check, right-click the drive in Windows and select Format. Format it to use the exFAT file system if its currently using NTFS. This will erase all files currently on the drive, so back up any files you care about before doing this.

  • Ensure the file path is exactly: USB storage > PS4 > UPDATE .

You Must Place Your Media Files In Folders

How to Watch Video on PS4 with a USB Flash Drive

Sony doesnt mention this anywhere, so we bumped into this problem ourselves. If you just have a video file and dump it into the root folder of your USB drive, the PlayStation 4 wont see it. Your files must be located inside a folder on the drive or your PS4 wont be able to use them.

Audio files must be located in a folder called Music on the drive for the PS4 to detect them correctly. Video files can be in any folder, but they need to be in a folder and not on the root of the drive. You could put them in a folder named Videos, or create separate folders for different types of videos. LIkewise, photos must also be stored in folders if you want to view them, but any folder name will do.

Format Ps4 Hard Drive By Connecting It To Pc Directly Through Cable

Step 1: Using a free/unused SATA data cable together with another free power cable Connect the PS4 hard drive to the motherboard of your PC

Step 2: Turn off your PC

Step 3: PC will recognize the hard drive, and youâll be able to format the hard drive the same way youâll format an internal hard drive.

    Why Format Ps4 Hard Drive

    FORMAT USB FOR PS4 space

Just like computers hard drive, formatting the internal hard drive of PS4 can be really useful in the following situations:

  • The performance of PS4 hard drive has degraded and the drive is no longer as fast as before. For this situation, to restore the hard drives performance to its original state, you must full-format it.
  • PS4 hard drive crashes or generates errors. Usually this happens due to the existence of bad sectors or the corruption of the hard drives file system. A full-format can totally fix both issues.
  • You want to reuse the stock hard drive of PS4 for a different purpose after replacing it with a new drive, or you want to sell it out or just dispose of it, and you want all stored data to be absolutely destroyed/erased. Although this can be done via PS4 system reset, a full-format is recommended here in order to reallocate the drives sectors and restore performance to factory specifications.
  • Theres an ambiguous conflict between games and applications that you cannot really detect. Although a format process can fix it properly, you better perform system reset instead to save time and efforts, as both will make the same result.
  • In all cases, performing a full-format to the hard drive once or twice a year can keep it running on its peak performance level until it totally gets out of action.

Format Your External Hdd Or Ssd On Your Ps4

If you want to use an external drive as extended storage on your PS4 then the format process couldnt be much simpler. This is because the PS4 uses its own encrypted file system when using a hard drive or SSD as extended storage.

All youve got to do is plug your drive into the console, head to the Settings menu, open Devices, and then USB Storage Devices. Pick the option to Format the drive as extended storage, and the console will take care of the whole process.

As ever, you do need to remember to use a USB 3.0 product with a capacity between 250GB and 8TB, otherwise the process wont work. But thats it.

If you want to use an external drive to store console backups the process is only a little more complex. This is because the PS4 doesnt encrypt and format the entire drive when making backups it leaves your hard disk or SSD free to be used for other tasks if youve got the space.

Youll need to make sure your hard disk, SSD or USB drive is formatted using the FAT32 or exFAT file systems the PS4 doesnt support the NTFS file system. We recommend exFAT, because it supports files that are over 4GB in size.

If you dont want to use your PS4 or if your drive is already plugged into another machine, then its also possible to format it using your Windows or Mac OS X machine.

    Usb File System For Ps4

    PS4 Can

Only FAT and exFAT formatted USB storage devices are supported on PS4. Your PS4 will not recognize your USB drive if it is NTFS formatted. If so, you need to convert it to a PS4 supported format.

    Tip:

If there are no important files, you can just go to Windows File Explorer to format the USB drive to exFAT. If there are some important files in the USB drive, you need to back up your USB drive before you format it.

There is another convenient method: you can use a professional partition manager to convert NTFS to FAT without data loss. You can try MiniTool Partition Wizard. You can find more useful information from this post: PS4 Can’t Read USB Flash Drive, How Can I Fix It? .

    Ps4 Extended Storage Standards

The external hard drive you want to use as an extended storage on PS4 must conform to the following standards:

    • Configured with USB 3.0 or Higher. Unlike the backup storage standard, PS4 system wont approve any external HDD as an extended storage unless it supports USB 3.0 connectivity.
    • Capacity Ranges from Minimum 250gb to Maximum 8tb. Note that theres a limit on the minimum storage capacity, unlike the backup storage standard.
    • No Hub Connection. Whether the USB hub is built in your external HDD or you just use an additional hub to connect to PS4, both wont work.
    • Not a NAS drive. Network Attached Storage external hard drives are NOT supported by PS4. So just pick a regular USB drive instead.
    • Wired Connection. PS4 system doesnt approve wireless external hard drives.
    • Single-Layer drives. If a dual layer external hard drive connects to PS4, only the first layer will be recognized and the other PS4 system will ignore.
    • Full Dedication. Note that PS4 system will totally format and encrypt your external hard drive with special file system that only works on PS4. So, unlike the backup storage solution, you cannot use this drive on a PC or MAC.

Once you find the drive that meets with all these standards, be sure its fully compatible for use on PS4.

How To Set Up And Use External Storage On Your Ps4

If you’re out of space for PS4 games, connecting an external drive is the easiest way to get more storage. Here’s how to use an external drive on PS4.

Depending on which model of PlayStation 4 you have, the system came with either 500GB or 1TB of storage. And while this is enough to store several games, chances are that you’ll run out of space before long, especially since games get larger all the time.

Having to uninstall games every time you want to play a new one is a hassle the solution is adding an external drive to get more storage. Here’s how to set up and use an external drive on your PS4.

Case : Ps4 Usb Storage Device Not Connected

If your USB drive is plugged into PS4 but its shown as not connected or PS4 keeps saying usb storage device not connected, you should consider the compatibility between them. It is possible that some old USB storage devices are not compatible with PS4.

In addition, the USB interface of PS4 is different from other game consoles and it is very difficult to plug in a drive. You might not have properly plugged into the port if the interface of your USB drive is too big. Therefore, it might seem like the drive is connected to PS4 but in fact it isn’t.

In this case, you should use a branded USB drive, for example, Samsung, SanDisk or Sony to connect to your PS4 for file transferring because these USB drives have better compatibility.

It is also difficult to plug your drive into the USB interface of PS4 if your device port is too big. If so, please use a USB 3.0 cable to connect your storage device to PS4. Once they are properly connected, your PS4 should be able to read the USB drive.

What’s The Best Format Should A Usb Stick Be For Ps4

For some weird reasons, the USB format for PS4 is FAT32 or exFAT. When you start formatting your external hard drive with a computer you get a choice to choose the file system you want. There are currently 2 choices that are provided by the windows operating system. These are exFAT and NTFS.

If you are planning on using a hard drive as external storage with PS4 then you need to select exFAT as a format system. The exFAT was introduced back in 2006 and FAT32 as compared to this is too old. Use the correct USB format for PS4 to get the best results.

    Ps4 External Drive Usage Tips

We’ve covered most of what you need to know about PS4 external drives, but there are still a few points to keep in mind while using one.

First is that you can connect external drives to your PS4 without formatting them for game storage as above. This is an option even for devices that don’t fit the above requirements, like USB 2 drives and small flash drives.

When you connect a drive like this, your PS4 can play videos and music stored on the drive. In addition, you can move replay clips and save game data to these drivesâperhaps for backup purposes.

If you disconnect your external drive, any games stored on it will still appear on your PS4. But when you try to select one without the external drive connected, you’ll see a message that it’s not playable until you connect the drive.

Be aware that you can only have one external drive used for games connected at a time. Even if you have two compatible drives connected, you have to choose one of them to use as extended storage. If you need even more space, it’s also possible to replace the internal hard drive of your PS4. This is slightly more complicated, but still an easy process.

Finally, if you experience an error with your external PS4 drive, see the PS4 extended storage error codes section of Sony’s PS4 external hard drive support page. Most of the error codes are fixable by formatting your drive again or disconnecting and reconnecting it. Be sure to restart your PS4 if you run into trouble, too.

What Is Ps4 Usb Storage Device

The PS4 USB storage device is a peripheral device that holds users data and files apart from the local HDD. It connects externally through the PS4 USB ports and works either as an extended storage or a backup medium. You cant use the same PS4 USB storage device for both purposes at the same time.

The first support for the PS4 USB storage device appeared in 2015 with the PS4 system software v. 2.5. Before that date it was not possible by any means to use a USB storage device with the PS4.

Worth it to say that any USB storage device works well with PS4 as a backup medium. Theres no condition/restraint on that.

Later, in 2017, Sony announced the support for the extended storage with version 4.5 of the PS4 system software.

Unlike the backup medium, there are several conditions that the USB storage device must meet before using it as an extended storage. Youll learn more about that later in this article.
