Ps5 Review: Performance And Load Times
With a powerful 8-core AMD Zen 2 processor, 10.3 teraflops of graphics power and a ridiculously fast custom SSD, the PS5 promises some of the best performance to ever come out of a games console. And while Ive only played a handful of titles that are designed to harness the PS5s power, Im already impressed by what Sonys console is able to pump out in terms of fidelity, framerate and, most importantly, load speeds.
This shouldnt come as a shock, but games look fantastic running on Sonys new console. Spider-Man: Miles Morales looked more akin to a high-end PC game than a PlayStation title, as I gawked at the gorgeous reds and purples of Spider-Man and his enemies popping off the screen in 4K. Thanks to the consoles ray-tracing support, Manhattans skyscrapers reflected off one another realistically, as did a series of lifelike puddles in a busy Times Square.
The PS5 version of Miles Morales has a special Performance mode, which turns off effects such as ray tracing and uses upscaled 4K in favor of a higher framerate. When I switched to this mode and zipped through the city at a silky 60 frames per second while still enjoying beautiful visuals, I felt like I was experiencing something that simply couldnt be done on previous-gen consoles. This made it extremely hard to go back to the PS4 version of Miles Morales, which often chugged below 30 frames per second.

Ps5 In 202: Possible Revisions Ahead
Those who havent been able to get hold of a PS5 yet may wonder if theyre better holding out for a major hardware revision of some kind a Slim model, or even a souped up PS5 Pro edition.
Those hoping for such news may be interested in a report from May that suggested a revision to the hardware was coming in late 2022, possibly to deal with the ongoing chip shortages. The rumor is that Sony may switch from 7nm chips to 6nm ones, which could give the theoretical PS5 revision a bit of a performance bump.
But take that with a pinch of salt as, historically, it would be unprecedented. It took between three and six years for smaller versions of Sonys consoles to appear in the past, and the first Pro model console the PS4 Pro also took three years to show up.
With the PS5 still flying off shelves, does Sony really have any reason to revive the hardware just yet?

Ps5 Redesign Reportedly Coming In 2022 With This Big Change
Redesigned PS5 with a new AMD chip could be in the works already
DigiTimes reports that semiconductor manufacturer TSMC is planning on producing a redesigned PS5 at some point in the second and third quarters of 2022. And it could deliver considerably more power.
The idea of a redesigned PS5 might seem a little premature given the current PS5 isnt even a year old yet. But the lack of stock and challenges around semiconductor supply did see Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki suggest stock shortages could be overcome with to electronic product design or finding other supply chain resources,
For example, we could find maybe second resource , or by changing design, we could cope with , said Totoki in Sony’s Q4 2021 earnings call transcribed by Seeking Alpha.
Its unclear whether Totoki is referring to the PS5 here or other electronics, or both. But combined with DigiTimes supply chain sources, the idea of a redesign PS5 doesn’t seem far fetched.
Formation Of Sony Computer Entertainment
At Sony Music Entertainment, Kutaragi worked closely with Shigeo Maruyama, the CEO of Sony Music, and with Akira Sato to form Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. on November 16, 1993. A building block of SCEI was its initial partnership with Sony Music which helped SCEI attract creative talent to the company as well as assist SCEI in manufacturing, marketing and producing discs, something that Sony Music had been doing with Music Discs. The final two key members of SCEI were Terry Tokunaka, the President of SCEI from Sony’s headquarters, and Olaf Olafsson. Olafsson was CEO and president of New York-based Sony Interactive Entertainment which was the parent company for the 1994-founded Sony Computer Entertainment of America .
The PlayStation project, SCEI’s first official project, was finally given the green light by Sony executives in 1993 after a few years of development. Also in 1993, Phil Harrison, who later became President of SCE Worldwide Studios, was recruited into SCEI to attract developers and publishers to produce games for their new PlayStation platform.

Playstation 5 Release Date And Availability
The PS5 launched in the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea, the PS5 on 12th November 2020. It arrived in the rest of the world on 19th November 2020.
Since the day it his stores, demand has outstripped supply. Most retailers are still struggling to get hold of PS5 stock even now. And when it does appear online, eager customers as well as bots are snapping it up within minutes.
Hoping to secure a PS5? Check out the quick links and tricks at the top of the this page. And here’s a detailed explanation of why it’s hard to find a PS5 deal in 2022, as well as a few extra tips to boost your chances.
in December 2021, Sony released announced a slew of new coloured accessories for 2022. Fans can now order “Galaxy-inspired” DualSense wireless controllers in Cosmic Red, Starlight Blue and Galactic Purple, as well as official coloured PS5 covers.
And in March 2022, Sony rolled out the first major PS5 software update and confirmed that VRR support will hit the PS5 in the “coming months”.
Ps: What We Want To See
A smaller consoleThe PS5 is a mammoth console. In fact, it’s the biggest console in modern history. But bigger doesn’t always mean better, and the PS5’s size makes it impractical for those who don’t have the shelving unit to house it – and, let’s be honest, not many of us do.
With the PS6 , we’re hoping that Sony can learn from its mistakes, making the next-gen console smaller and more streamlined, while allowing for adequate airflow.
More affordable expandable internal storageIt will be possible to expand the PS5’s internal storage by popping off the side panel and installing an SSD, once Sony drops a software update to enable it – but it’s not that simple. The PS5 only accepts compatible NVMe SSDs, which match or excel past the existing drive specifications, and they don’t come cheap.
These types of SSDs are typically pretty pricey, meaning that players may opt for external storage instead – but unfortunately, these externals storage options don’t harness the raw power of the PS5. With the PS6, we hope that Sony will make expanding internal storage easier – perhaps taking an approach similar to the Xbox Series X’s expandable storage card.

Ps5 In 202: Spartacus The Game Pass Clone
While individual PS5 exclusives are interesting, whats more exciting is Sonys reported plans to beat Microsoft at its own game by introducing a Game Pass-like service to PlayStation in the spring.
Codenamed Spartacus, the service will reportedly allow players to play a selection of classic and modern games for the cost of a monthly subscription fee. It will apparently merge PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now into one service, with Sony apparently keeping the formers branding while phasing out the latter.
The new look PS Plus will now come with three tiers: the first being what it is now , with the next tier offering a library of PS4 and PS5 games, and the final one providing all of the above, plus extended demos, game streaming and titles from the PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP platforms.
Where To Buy Ps5 In The Us
For the US, we see consoles about once a month at major retailers but it still sells out in a matter of minutes at the likes of Amazon and Walmart – both of which just held a restock.
Still, here are the US stores that carry PS5 and Digital Edition consoles regularly. We update this list as soon as we get news of an upcoming restock with the announced time and date so you can be best prepared to bag a console.
Sony’s official PlayStation Direct store is usually the first place to sell consoles during each restock cycle. In order to buy one, though, you need to register your details and receive an exclusive email invite to each restock event. These usually take place about once a month. A public sale often goes live if any consoles are still available after the invite phase.

Ps5 In 202: Expect More Stock Shortages
Bad news for people still banking on PS5 restocks: Sony isnt expecting the hardware shortage to end in the first half of 2022.
Recently, Sony reduced its production target for April 2021 to March 2022 from 16 million to 15 million, and while the projection for the following fiscal year of 22.6 million is obviously better, manufacturing partners are reportedly worried that this is somewhat optimistic.
The most positive estimate comes from AMD, which produces the chipset for the PS5. Back in October, CEO Lisa Su said: I expect it to be from June-September of next year 2022 when, perhaps, it will be possible to go down to a video game store or a department store to buy a PlayStation 5 or an Xbox Series X without it being an impossible task.
The perhaps may be doing some heavy lifting there, as a lot of non-AMD components make up a PS5, but its something to hold on to if youre still on the hunt for hardware in 2022.
Youtube Search Through Voice Command
Another feature were excited to bring to more PS5 players is the ability to search for content on YouTube through Voice Command . From anywhere on PS5, including during gameplay, you can say Hey PlayStation, find on YouTube. The YouTube app will open and relevant search results will be shown.
Note: Voice Command is currently available in English for PS5 players with accounts registered to the U.S. and U.K.

Ps5 Pro: Release Date Price Specs And More Rumors
As we approach the hard-to-get PS5’s one-year anniversary, it’s time to turn attention to a possible more powerful new model of the PlayStation 5.
Senior Editor / Advice
I’ve been reviewing hardware and software, devising testing methodology and handed out buying advice for what seems like forever I’m currently absorbed by computers and gaming hardware, but previously spent many years concentrating on cameras. I’ve also volunteered with a cat rescue for over 15 years doing adoptions, designing marketing materials, managing volunteers and, of course, photographing cats.
Almost a year after Sony launched its cutting-edge PS5 console, chances are you’re probably still , desperately trying to find one that’s not part of a sure-I’ll-pay-$500-more bundle. It’s never too soon to start thinking about the next console you might not be able to get, though after all, if there’s something as good or better on the horizon, why not give your Twitter trawling a break? Thus arise the nascent rumors about a new PS5 Pro. At the moment, the sole tip-based leak comes from reputable Moore’s Law is Dead , which claims that Sony’s working on a new, higher-specced model of the PS5.

And it’s a lot less likely, but I’d really welcome a cheaper “PS5 Slim” along the lines of the Xbox Series S, targeted at newbies and more price-sensitive gamers.

Ps5 Review: Backwards Compatibility
The PS5 works with nearly all PS4 games, which is a huge step up from Sonys complete lack of backwards compatibility last generation. I tested close to a dozen PS4 games on PS5, including The Last of Us Part II, God of War, Mortal Kombat 11, Tetris Effect and Resident Evil 2, and almost all of them loaded faster and ran better than they did on my launch PS4. Both digital and disc-based PS4 games worked without a hitch on my PS5, and my physical movies worked just fine on the systems 4K Blu-ray drive.
The PS5 allows you to take advantage of any PS4 Pro enhancements a game offers, so games that have higher resolution or frame rate modes benefit the most from Sonys new console. As someone coming from a launch PS4, the ability to finally enjoy God of Wars high-frame rate mode or play Tetris Effect in 4K felt almost worth the price of admission on its own .
The PS5 is designed to work with most first-party and officially licensed PS4 accessories, and I had no issues bringing my existing last-gen gear over. Pairing my DualShock 4 to the PS5 was as simple as plugging it in via USB cable, and my existing headsets worked just fine with the DualSenses 3.5 mm audio jack.
Third-party wired controllers, such as my Hori Fightpad and Victrix Pro FS Fight Stick, also worked perfectly as I mashed buttons in Mortal Kombat. Just keep in mind that the DualShock 4 only works with backwards compatible PS4 games, so you wont be able to use it for PS5-only titles.
Where To Buy Ps5 In The Uk
For the UK, the PS5 is in stock most weeks now. It stays available anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days depending on the retailer, the number of consoles in stock or the quality of bundles on offer. Check the quick links below to find out the latest on retailers that hold PS5 restocks in the UK.
Similar to BT, the PS5 is an EE customer exclusive. Anyone currently on an EE contract – or that signs up as a new customer – can add the PS5 to their plan if it’s in stock. You simply pay a part of the cost upfront and then pay off the rest of the console over the next 11 months on top of your existing monthly bill.

Ps5 Review: Ports And Expansion
The PS5 has a fairly standard array of ports, complete with some welcome modern conveniences. You get a Hi-Speed USB Type-A port up front, as well as a USB Type-C SuperSpeed port. Its nice to see a console finally feature USB-C connectivity out of the box, especially for connecting modern accessories and storage drives.
In the back, youll find two SuperSpeed USB-A ports, an Ethernet jack, an HDMI 2.1 port and an AC adapter. The PS5 has ditched the PS4s optical audio port, which may be a bummer for folks with high-end audio devices with optical connections. However, some companies are already offering optical-to-HDMI splitters, such as Astro with its Astro A20 headset. If you want to expand on the PS5s built-in 825GB of SSD storage, theres PCle 4.0 M.2 expansion slot that you can access by opening up the console. Note that not all SSDs are supported, you will need one that hits Sonys fairly strict requirements , such as the Western Digital SN850, Samsung 980 Pro, or the upcoming Sony-produced Nextorage M.2 NVMe SSD.
At launch, the expansion slot was locked but the latest PS5 software update has unlocked it which enables users to add an additional SSD for more storage. We tested out the process ourselves while the feature was still in beta, and enjoyed some excellent results.
Ps6 Price: How Much Will It Cost
Again, at this early stage we’ll have to rely on history to suggest what the new console might cost. The PS3 launched at £425 in the UK. When the PS4 arrived it cost a lower price of £349. Finally, the PS5 launched at £449, the highest of the three.
More like this
On the one hand it’s easy to imagine this upward trajectory continuing, but it’s also important note that the growing popularity of game streaming could counter this. Game streaming relies on a good internet connection to stream games to your console without any disc or download, both PlayStation and Xbox are introducing streaming facilities and they’ll be far more developed by the time the next console comes around.
Essentially, game streaming means that the bulk of the computing is done in the cloud and less demand is put on your console. This could mean that consoles of the future rely on super-fast internet connections but actually need less expensive, powerful internals. We’ll have to wait and see.
