How Much Does The Playstation 5 Cost

Don't Miss

Ps5 Exclusive Games: $118/118

How much will the PlayStation 5 cost?

The PS5 is ushering in a generation of games that will cost up to $70/£70 a game, which means youre going to have to get used to spending a good amount more on games if you want to get them as soon as they come out. Lets say youve just got a PS5, then your main choice of exclusives are Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demons Souls, costing $49/£49 and $69/£69 respectively on the PlayStation Store.

As getting one game for the PS5 doesn’t really make sense, were going to assume youll want both to get yourself started on Sonys new console. That means youll need to part with $118/£118, which is a pretty hefty amount for two games, one of which is basically an expansion pack to a 2018 game as well as a being available on the PS4 and the other is a remake, albeit a grimly beautiful one, of a 2009 game. Fancy a third-party game, with next-gen graphics? Then you could opt for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which will still set you back $59/£59, though the game has been discounted for the holiday season. While you can wait for game sales, getting a suite of PS5 games to get started with isnt going to be cheap.

Why The Ps5 Is $500

The price of the PS5 may be surprising for some, although rumors suggested before today that the cost of the PS5’s two versions would be $500 and $400. The PS5 Showcase certainly took its time getting there. After some surprise reveals of titles like Final Fantasy XVI and extended footage from games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the price was finally revealed. There are a number of factors to explain why Sony chose this price for the PS5.

The Xbox Series X was announced as being $499.99 last week, and if the rumors are true that it altered the PS5’s price, that certainly could’ve gone into Sony’s thinking process. This puts the price of the PS5 at $100 higher than the PS4, but still $100 less than the PS3. The PS3’s high cost hurt sales initially, so it’s a smart move from Sony to place the PS5 under $600. At $499.99, the PS5 can easily compete with the Xbox Series X and avoid the pitfalls of the PS3’s initial pricing.

Now that players know the price of the PS5, all that’s left is for pre-orders to go up. The next-gen console is scheduled to release in November. Now, all players have to do is wait.

Ps: How Believable Are These Leaks

The Carrefour product page is no longer online – if it ever was. Even if the screenshot is not a fake, the listed price could only be a placeholder. The prices for the PS5 consoles still agree with the assessment of some analysts – including Michael Pachter. However, it is somewhat doubtful that the PS5 controller will cost only 49.90 euros.

The Twitter leaker has revealed various information about the PS5 and the games in recent months. Some of them turned out to be true in hindsight. Among other things, he had correctly predicted the release for 2021 before the official announcement of “Horizon 2: Forbidden West”. However, he was wrong with his information a few times – for example with the date of the PS5 unveiling.

How is his prediction for the release date of the PS5 to be classified? Sony has recently emphasized several times that the production of the next-gen console is on schedule and that the release is planned for Christmas 2020 – in the USA this will start in November. Therefore, the leaker does not lean far out the window with his claim. Whether the PS5 will really appear in Germany on November 20th will only be certain when Sony officially announces this. * tz.de is part of the nationwide Ippen digital editorial network.

Michael Pachter Strikes Again

If youve been a long time reader here on PS5 Gamers, then you know we like to cover industry analyst Michael Pachters predictions as they are both relevant and interesting. Hes not always right, but he comes pretty close more often than not.

The latest news from him is a in June 2019 where he laid down some interesting predictions for Project Scarlett and PS5s price point:

The specs suggest $500 or so, but my bias is that Microsoft will announce $399 and Sony will follow suit.

I would love to see $399, but I find it hard to believe the new systems will go for that low. Its common knowledge that console manufacturers sell systems at a loss in the beginning. They reap the benefits later on when people buy accessories and games.

Even so, with the specs we are hearing about $399 would be a substantial loss. In Microsofts case, if the rumors are true about two consoles at launch , then we could have a base model for $399 and the enhanced for $499 or more, but nothing in the wind points to Sony have multiple consoles at launch.

Read on to learn more about the other hints weve seen on the PS5 price.

The Decoy Effect Vs Pushing Consumers Toward Digital

But pricing the PS5 against itself comes down to what is most important to Sony right now. Does Sony want to funnel PlayStation fans into digital ownership or is it more concerned about taking a loss on hardware sales?

Sony may want people to buy PS5: Digital Edition because it gets a higher profit margin from downloads versus physical media. That could serve the company well in the long run.

In that case, expect a $100 difference between the two PS5 variations.

But Sony may just want to guard against losses on hardware. If the PS5 is losing money at $500, which is possible, then the PS5: Digital Edition would lose even more at $400. The company would potentially make up that difference over time, but it may have reasons for desiring profits now instead of later.

In that case, Sony could deploy the decoy effect. The most famous example here is movie-theater popcorn. The vendor sells a small popcorn for $4, medium for $8, and a large for $8.50. In that situation, you dont even look at the small, you think about how you cant pass up on paying just 50 cents more to get a large instead of a medium.

If Sony would prefer customers spend more money upfront on the standard PS5, it could create a decoy effect with a $449.99 price for PlayStation 5: Digital Edition. If the full PS5 is $499.99 and especially if the PS5: Digital Edition is hard to find people will focus on just paying $50 more to get a no-compromises PS5 instead of any comparisons to the Xbox Series S.

Playstation 5 Stock Update: Overview

PlayStation 5 – How Much Should it Cost? PS5 Price

Thanks to COVID-19 complications, semiconductor shortages and overwhelming demand, the PlayStation 5 has remained extremely sought after since release.

So, are stock shortages becoming more infrequent – and will the PlayStation 5 be more readily available heading into the holiday season? In short, yes – hopefully.

The latest word on stock shortages actually came straight from Sony, who noted in a call to investors in August 2021 that it should be able to produce 12 million PlayStation 5 units before the end of the current fiscal year – 31 March 2022.

This relates back to the semiconductor shortage that has plagued the industry since the pandemic began.

How quickly it can start delivering this new wave of consoles remains to be seen, of course, but the hope is that the worst of the shortages is now over.

In reality, seeing the PS5 in the wild will remain extremely unlikely for months to come. Xbox head Phil Spencer noted as much recently, stating that shortages of the Xbox Series X and Series would continue into the early part of 2022.

That means you’ll still have to be extremely vigilant for stock updates from the retailers outlined above. They may be more frequent nowadays, but stock is by no means flowing normally.

Ps5 Price: How Much Does The Ps5 Cost

The PS5 price comes in at $499 – the same cost as the Xbox Series X price. That shouldn’t come as a surprise to many, seeing as it’s difficult to imagine the PS5 price exceeding $500 when it’s up against the affordable spread put out by Microsoft.

However, the cheaper PS5 Digital Edition price is $399.99 / £359.99 / AU$599.95, which does flag some concerns considering the Xbox Series S’s $299 price tag. However, Sony has always been quick to point to its prioritization of value over price, so if you’re looking for those heavy-hitting PS5 exclusives it might be worth shelling out for the more expensive console. Plus, the PS5 Digital Edition runs the same specs as the fully-fledged console, further cementing its position in the market as a high value for money option.

That means bargain hunters can still experience everything the PS5 has to offer while foregoing the opportunity to play physical PS4 and PS5 games or save cash by buying in the second-hand market. It’s an excellent proposition that will certainly capture those going for sheer value for money at launch.

A Lesson In Economics: How Inflation Will Affect The Ps5 Price

From what I recall, I got a decent grade in economics in high school, once I was out of my general education in college, I left math on the side of the road and never looked back. For the sake of you, my dear readers, I will once more tread that narrow path suspended above a black abyss of confusion and uncertainty.

First things first, a quick lesson on inflation for the benefit of myself and anyone else reading this whos last brush with economics was in high school. So, the straight vanilla ice definition of inflation is as follows:

A general increase in prices and fall in the purchasing value of money.

Essentially what this means is that inflation occurs when prices go up as a result of high demand and low supply. Take the PlayStation 3 for example. Everybody wanted it, but no one had it in stock. This kind of situation creates inflation over time because manufacturers can charge higher prices for items that are equally high in demand, but low in supply.

The process of inflation also affects how much a single dollar is worth. Of course, a dollar is always a dollar, but the actual value of it changes based on inflation. For example, a dollar today is worth far less than a dollar two decades ago. A dollar from then would be worth over twenty dollars today!

A recent article from IGN discussed the cost of gaming in regards to inflation over the years. Colin Moriarty, the articles author made an excellent point in regards to the price of game consoles:

Playstation 5 Price: Recent History

Here

After much waiting, Sony announced the price and release date of the PS5 on 16th September 2020.

The company set the price of the PS5 Digital Edition at £360 , and the PS5 disc edition at £450 . That came as a pleasant surprise to those who’d expected the PS5 to be priced higher than the rival Xbox Series X. Prices remain rock solid with demand continuing to outstrip supply in 2022.

But how does the PS5’s price compare to that of its predecessors?

The original PlayStation and PS2 launched at £299 in 1994 and 2000 respectively. The PS3 was quite the step up in 2006, with the entry-level 20GB model starting at £425 although that was more or less in line with inflation with regard to the original PlayStation, and there were also the significant hardware upgrades to factor in, not least of all being the Blu-ray optical drive.

Nonetheless, the PS3 was initially criticised partly for its seemingly high price. The 60GB model’s $599 price tag took particularly heavy flack. By the arrival of the PS3 Slim in 2009, though, all seemed to have been forgiven.

The bigger public surprise was saved for the 2013 PS4 launch, however, when the PlayStation price dropped down to £350 and heralded the arrival of one of the best-selling games consoles of all time.

Playstation 5 Specs And Features

When lead system architect Mark Cerny gave an interview with Wired magazine in April 2019, the world began to discover a little more about the next generation PlayStation that Sony has been working on for four years.

Although tight-lipped about the exact capabilities of the new device at the time, the article made clear that Sony would be delivering a fundamental change in the gaming experience for users a real step up from the PS4 or its Slim and Pro cousins.

Since then the full PS5 specs have been confirmed:

  • The console will have an 8-core, 16-thread CPU.
  • The graphics will run on a custom AMD GPU.
  • The new console will have custom 825GB SSD storage built-in.
  • The optical drive will run 4K Blu-ray discs.
  • The PS5 is expected to have a revamped user interface
  • The controller will have adaptive triggers and haptic feedback for a more immersive gameplay experience.
  • The memory interface will be 16GB GDDR6 / 256-bit
  • The memory bandwidth will be 448GB/s
  • The IO throughput will be 5.5GB/s , typical 8-9GB/s

  • The PS5 will support USB HDD external storage for PS4 games

Spare Dualsense Controller: $69/59

Sonys DualSense controller is a rather special peripheral given its advanced haptics that can when implemented well deliver a more tactile and immersive gaming experience. . But you only get one DualSense controller in the PS5s box. While the controller is easily recharged via USB-C, it only lasts some four to six hours.

So you might want to have a spare controller handy for when your main one runs out of electrical juice mid-gaming session. Or if you have friends around and want to play some split-screen multiplayer when the coronavirus pandemic subsides. To do that you need to fork out an extra $69/£59, which isnt an unreasonable price for a pretty advanced controller. But a second DualSense means the cost of owning a PS5 creeps up yet again.
