The next-generation of consoles is almost upon us, with fans now privy to every bit of information regarding the PS5 and the Xbox Series X. By now, players should be able to make a clear preference regarding their choice of next-gen console.

While players quite often end up buying both the consoles, the majority likes to stick to one console. There are several factors that come into play when deciding between consoles.

Factors such as pricing, hardware, or first-party exclusives play a crucial role. However, one other factor that is important to many players is Backwards Compatibility, i.e., if the console can play games from previous consoles.

This is because players, over the duration of the current or previous generation of consoles, would have a substantial collection of titles.

How To Play Backwards Compatible Playstation 4 Games

The PS5 will be able to play nearly every PS4 game thats available through backwards compatibility. Sony also promises that some games will actually be able to take advantage of the extra power on the new console to provide a Game Boost for faster or smoother frame rates. That said, Sony also warns that some functionality from PS4 titles may not be available, and there may be errors or unexpected behavior when playing backwards compatible titles on the PS5.

Playing PlayStation 4 games off a disc

The simplest way to play backwards compatible games is to simply put the disc into your PS5. Some games will require an update to be installed, but beyond that, its just plug and play.

Playing digitally purchased PlayStation 4 games

Digitally purchased games are slightly more complex, although itll still work similarly to downloading any other digital title. Players existing PS4 games will continue to show up in their game libraries on the PS5, just like they currently do on the PS4. To install and play one, a player will have to select the game from their library and download it.

And unlike PS5 games , PS4 games can be installed and played directly from an external drive.

Sony also notes that itll offer an option to transfer both digital downloads and save data from a PS4 to a PS5 over Wi-Fi or a LAN cable.

Do Ps5 Games Work With External Usb Hard Drives

They do not. Even USB SSDs are far, far slower than the PS5s built-in storage, so all PS5 games must be installed to the consoles internal SSD.

If you were hoping to be able to use a large external hard drive as cold storage for PS5 games i.e., clearing space on the internal SSD by moving installed games to a USB HDD, rather than deleting them and having to re-download them later thats unfortunately not an option. In fact, the PS5 doesnt even let you copy PS5 save files to a USB drive the only backup option is cloud storage, which is available exclusively for PlayStation Plus subscribers.

Explorations for allowing players to store PS5 games on a USB drive in a future update are underway, Sony says in its PS5 FAQ.

Anything goes for PS4 games, though. You can copy them from a PS4 to a PS5 using Sonys built-in data transfer feature, and/or put them on a USB 3.0 drive that you plug in to the PS5. You can play PS4 games directly from USB storage to get some performance improvements, or move them to the PS5s internal SSD to take advantage of upgrades like further reductions in loading times.

The PS5 user interface might fool some people into thinking that the console offers something akin to the Quick Resume feature thats available on Xbox Series X and Series S … but no, it does not.

PS5 Backwards Compatibility: Will the PS5 be able to play ...

Sony’s page on the PS5’s backward compatibility has a lot of helpful information about how backward compatibility works on PS5.

It contains the PS4 titles that do not work on PS5, which are as follows at the time of writing:

  • Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma Volume One
  • TT Isle of Man – Ride on the Edge 2
  • Just Deal With It!
  • Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
  • Shadwen

Sony states that “This list is subject to change and excludes demos, media, and non-game applications.” Previous versions of the list included more games, so it’s possible that some of the above will become playable on PS5 in the future.

This list likely won’t disappoint many people. None of these games are among the PS4’s greatest hitsin fact, the publisher of Afro Samurai 2 even removed it from the PS Store and issued refunds due to overwhelmingly negative reception.

When browsing the PlayStation Store, you’ll see a Playable on: PS4 only tag for any games that don’t work on PS5. You may also see the following message for any games that have minor bugs when played on PS5:

When playing on PS5, this game may exhibit errors or unexpected behavior and some features available on PS4 may be absent.

Keep in mind that PlayStation VR games are playable on PS5 too, but you’ll need all accessories, including the PlayStation Camera . You may also need one or two PlayStation Move controllers for some PS VR titles.

Does Save Progression Carry Over From Ps4 To Ps5

Now this is a tricky one. If youve invested hours into a game, only to discover all your work, loot, and statistics will disappear on the next-gen consoles, you might be less inclined to play those games on the PS5.

When playing PS4 games on the PS5, you can transfer your cloud save data over to the new console pretty easily, but when it comes to PS4 games to the upgraded PS5 version, its slightly different, as it depends on the developers.

However, this could all change as we go further into the generation, with developers making U-Turns if backlash from fans is strong enough. Indeed, Insomniac now allows saves from Spider-Man PS4 to carry over onto the PlayStation 5s Remastered version, following criticism from fans.

When it comes to cross-saves between Xbox and PS5, many of these titles such as Fortnite, Call of Duty, Minecraft, No Mans Sky, and Rocket League support cross-save progression. However, the likes of Among Us, Outriders, Apex Legends, PUBG and Borderlands 3 do not.

Playing the other 99 percent of PS4 games on PS5 is simple. Then visit the Library on your PS5’s home screen, find the PS4 game you want to play, and download it.

To play disc-based PS4 games, you must own the standard PS5 model with a disc drive. Just insert the disc, let the game install, and you can play it. You’ll need to keep the disc inserted to play the game. Since the PS5 Digital Edition lacks a disc drive, you can’t play physical PS4 games on it.

That said, the backwards compatibility on the PS5 wont always be perfect. Sony says some PS4 titles may exhibit errors or unexpected behavior when running on the next-generation hardware. Certain functionalities in the game may also not be available when playing it on the PS5.

The other issue is your game saves. Nishino’s blog post mentions a variety of ways you can transfer PS4 game saves to a PS5, including the option to simply bring them over using an external USB storage device. But he also notes: “The ability to transfer game saves between a PS4 version and a PS5 version of the same game is a developer decision, and will vary title by title for cross-generational games.”

So don’t be surprised if Sony still needs time to iron out the console’s backwards compatibility. The company’s support document on the feature is also advising users to first try out the PS4 game on a PS5 to see if theyre happy with the experience before making add-on purchases for the title.
