It’s All About The Gpu
Laptops that rely on their processors’ integrated graphics are useless for VR applications. Just as when shopping for a gaming laptop or a mobile workstation, your first priority must be a discrete or dedicated GPU, and a good one. Even avid gamers are often satisfied with a GPU capable of showing 60 frames per second on a laptop screen or desktop monitor, but on a headset that frame rate can at best look choppy and at worst cause nauseaâa sustained 90fps is more comfortable.

The Oculus Quest 2 May Be A Better Purchase
Though it doesnt boast the power of the PS4, Facebooks Oculus Quest 2 headset easily trumps PSVR in terms of accessibility, immersion and even pricing. True, you wont be playing No Mans Sky on Quest 2 anytime soon , but what games you can play on Quest you can play without wires and a full 360 degrees of tracking. For games like Red Matter and Superhot VR, it offers a much more compelling end-result. Plus the base 64GB model is $299, which is $50 cheaper than PSVR and you dont need a console.
Plus Quest 2 is just at the start of its life, with at least a few more years of exciting releases ahead of it. And if you ever want to upgrade, you can instead buy a PC and play exclusive Oculus Rift titles like Lone Echo and Asgards Wrath. If you buy an Oculus Quest, you know youll be set for a little while. For PSVR, that might be a different matter. You can read more on the comparisons in our PSVR vs Quest 2 article.

How Playstation Vr Is Better And Worse Than Oculus Rift And Htc Vive
How does Sony’s breakthrough console-based VR experience compare to its PC-based rivals? It’s a series of compromises that you may or may not want to make.
So you’re thinking, maybe, about buying something that does VR. Maybe. You’re on the fence. You’ve heard it might be cool. But what to buy? There are lots of different headsets to choose from. Some of them work with phones. Some work with PCs. And then there’s the PlayStation VR.
The PlayStation VR is, in some ways, similar the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. They’re the best ways to experience VR, but they only work on a Windows computer. But in other ways, the PSVR is quite different from its PC cousins.
Here’s what you need to know now that the PSVR is finally on sale. I’ve played with it for a couple of weeks, and I’ve been torn on it. It’s better than other VR…and it’s worse.
How? Read on.
The Walking Dead: Saints And Sinners
VR Platforms: PSVR, Steam, Oculus, Windows
And finally, here are some for the more advanced user, starting with Saints and Sinners.
This is not just one of the better Walking Dead video game spin-offs, it’s one of the better zombie VR games. It’s a tense survival horror game that offers perhaps the most authentic and believable feeling of trying to get by in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse that we can remember, as well as moral choices to savour, or agonise over, as you meet the various factions holed up in a ruined New Orleans.

Best For The Tightest Budgets
- Not quite capable of 60fps gaming at high settings in AAA titles
- Only 256GB of storage in test configuration is restrictive for gaming
Virtual reality demands anything-but-virtual hardware. Exploring the immersive, interactive worlds of today’s VR games and applications takes considerable processing and graphics power. That means that, with one notable exceptionâthe standalone Oculus Quest 2, our Editors’ Choice pick for cable-free virtual realityâyour VR headset must be tethered to or plugged into a high-end PC.
What kind of PC do you need? Beefy gaming desktops are a common option, but not everyone has the space or the desire for a bulky tower. Being able to move your VR machine from room to roomâor take it on the go, if you need to show off VR demosâis more appealing.
This is where a VR-ready laptop comes in. Unfortunately, the average consumer laptop is not suited to the requirements of virtual realityâchances are, it doesn’t have a sufficiently potent graphics processing unit , or it has an HDMI port for an external monitor when most VR headsets dictate a DisplayPort connector instead. You’ll have better odds of success with a specialized laptop designed for gamers or digital content creators. Most of all, you’ll need to know what you’re looking for to make sure your headset is compatible. What does it take to get virtual? We’ll tell you.
Screen Storage And Battery
After meeting the VR hardware requirements, other factors come down to your personal preferences and needs. You’ll find both 15.6-inch and 17.3-inch laptops compatible with popular headsets , but of course you’ll be wearing your headset while playing, not looking at the screen. The display size you pick should depend on how you use your laptop when you’re not using VR.
Our laptop buying guide will walk you through the pros and cons of different screen sizes. If your work is mostly confined to your desk, a 17.3-inch notebook is a plus, though some can weigh a barely luggable 8 to 10 pounds. If you’ll often take your laptop on the go, a lighter 15.6-inch system makes sense. In addition to the screen size, you’ll want to assess the display characteristics, notably the peak refresh rate; modern gaming laptops have “faster refresh” screens than most older models.
All laptops have their own visual styles, as well, ranging from businesslike bland to gamer garish. The difference is totally subjective, but you don’t want to be stuck looking at something you don’t like. For example, Alienware machines tend toward flashy; most Gigabyte machines look much more conservative.

Playstation Vr Works With Steam Vr But Theres A Catch
- Steam VR is now usable with PS VR via third-party drivers
- Games that use Vive motion controllers will not work
- Games that use a keyboard and mouse or conventional controllers work
Valve may have acknowledged Sonys ascendancy by bringing support for the DualShock 4 to Steam, but if its virtual reality youre after, your options are HTC Vive or the Oculus Rift. That is, until now.
An enterprising company by the name of Trinus VR has made it possible to use PlayStation VR with Steam. By releasing a set of drivers, it is now possible to use Steam VR on a Windows PC.
But there’s a catch. It wont work with games that need Vives motion controllers. Although;it does just fine with those that work with a keyboard and mouse or the Xbox 360, Xbox One, or DualShock 4. The refresh rate is stuck at 60Hz for now though.
There arent too many configuration options at the moment and you will need to connect the PS VR breakout box to your PC as well as require a USB 3.0 port. A complete rundown of the downsides to using PS VR with Steam VR can be found in the video below:
As for PS VR itself, our impressions indicate that while it is the cheapest fully-fledged VR headset at the moment, the overall experience leaves a lot to be desired. More so if you plan on playing it beyond the initial novelty. At the recent PlayStation Experience, Sony announced just one game for PS VR, making us wonder if well see anything of value after the initial hype dies down.

How The Playstation Vr Is Better
The headset feels and looks fantastic.
The PSVR attaches easily, and it feels s a lot more comfortable on my face than any other headset. Its lenses also get less smudgy and foggy, which leads to crisper visuals.
It’s less expensive than systems such as Oculus Rift and HTC Vive that require a PC.
The PSVR costs $400 for the headset, or $500 for the bundle . The bundle is worth it if you don’t have those controllers or the camera.
And the PS4 only starts at $300, or even less if you get a used or discounted one . And at least 40 million of us already have a PS4, so that cost is already baked in. But the bottom line is that the PSVR hardware and a full system — including a PS4 — is more affordable than the equivalent PC setup.
It’s the cheapest way to explore “room scale” VR
Phone-based VR headsets such as the Gear VR and Google Daydream View just let you look around — you can’t move and pick up things realistically. The PSVR can track your head in 3D space, and it tracks your hands using PlayStation Move controllers. It can even use the regular PS4 DualShock4 controller, which does a nifty job of moving in VR for some games. This means you can move around a bit, poke your head towards virtual things for a closer look, and reach out to grab objects.
It works with older accessories
It’s already got enough good games

Processor And Memory Concerns
Outside of the graphics card, component hardware requirements for VR are somewhat easier to hit. As far as the CPU goes, the Oculus Rift S and Vive Cosmos both say you’ll be okay with a Core i5-4590 or equivalent. That’s a quad-core desktop processor that Intel introduced in 2014 . The Valve Index requires a dual-core CPU as a bare minimum, but recommends four cores or more.
The same goes for the Oculus Link cable that connects an Oculus Quest 2 headset to a PC to play games like Half-Life: Alyx. The minimum for AMD CPUs is equally undemandingâthe Ryzen 5 1500X, a desktop quad-core that dates back to 2017.
What to know when looking at CPUs: While four processing cores are really a necessity , any modern 10th or 11th Generation Intel Core i5 laptop chips, or AMD Ryzen 5 4000 or 5000 series ones, will be fine for even the latest VR apps. A Core i7 or a Ryzen 7 will give you ample headroom for future software.
What’s nice: You’d be hard-pressed to find a current- or previous-generation gaming laptop that won’t meet those CPU minimums. Gaming laptops almost universally use one of Intel’s or AMD’s H-series CPUs, which are higher-powered processors than the U-series silicon in most thin non-gaming laptops, and a minimum of four cores. Any late-model Core i5, i7, or i9, or a Ryzen 5 or 7 H-series chip, should do the job nicely for VR.

Good For Vr Players Building Out A Compact Pc
- Fast frame rates in multiplayer titles

Decades after the 1992 flick; The Lawnmower Man;got our hopes up ,;virtual reality ;is finally happening in a big way.
The simplistic, though still impressive, Google Cardboard and Samsung Gear VR platforms have both been around since 2014. And Google’s updated;Daydream View;landed in late 2016, upping the sophistication and comfort factor, while delivering a more robust environment for developers. These modest VR setups had you strap your smartphone into a viewer fitted with lenses, allowing your phone to become both the screen and the graphics-rendering device charged with creating an immersive world.
These were impressive early attempts at “cheap VR,” but the screens on most;smartphones;just don’t pack enough pixels to deliver a sharp image a few inches from your eyeballs. And even since then, today’s smartphone graphics chips aren’t;quite;up to the task of rendering complex 3D worlds with high-resolution textures in a way that passes muster up that close. It’s tough to feel truly immersed in a virtual world when you’re staring at a grainy screen, blocky text, and distant mountains that look pixelated.
