Again, the PS5 can’t play PSP or PS Vita games. There are some exceptions: Patapon was remastered for PS4, and as such is playable on PS5. Similarly, Gravity Rush was remastered for PS4, and is playable on PS5. But the PS5 is not compatible with PSP’s UMD discs or PS Vita’s cartridges, and any PS Store purchases you may have made for either handheld are not compatible with PS5.

Which Ps4 Games Aren’t Backward

Sony’s page on the PS5’s backward compatibility has a lot of helpful information about how backward compatibility works on PS5.

It contains the PS4 titles that do not work on PS5, which are as follows at the time of writing:

Sony states that “This list is subject to change and excludes demos, media, and non-game applications.” Previous versions of the list included more games, so it’s possible that some of the above will become playable on PS5 in the future.

This list likely won’t disappoint many people. None of these games are among the PS4’s greatest hitsin fact, the publisher of Afro Samurai 2 even removed it from the PS Store and issued refunds due to overwhelmingly negative reception.

When browsing the PlayStation Store, you’ll see a Playable on: PS4 only tag for any games that don’t work on PS5. You may also see the following message for any games that have minor bugs when played on PS5:

When playing on PS5, this game may exhibit errors or unexpected behavior and some features available on PS4 may be absent.

Keep in mind that PlayStation VR games are playable on PS5 too, but you’ll need all accessories, including the PlayStation Camera . You may also need one or two PlayStation Move controllers for some PS VR titles.

So how about PS4? The bad news is that PS4 is not fully compatible with PS3, or any other PlayStation console for that matter at least not in the way you might think. You see, you cant just pop a PS3 disc into your PS4, or download any PS3 game via the PS Store. They simply wont work.

What Is The Ps4

As the name might suggest, the PS4 is Sonys 4th home console. Its the successor to the PS3, a console that you all learnt about in our is the PS3 backwards compatible article and an absolute beast of a machine that is still very much current today.

Sonys name appears three times in the list of the top 5 best selling consoles of all time. The PS4, rather fittingly, sits at Number 4, with 115.9 million sales under its glowing blue belt.

Playstation Now: A Different Kind Of Backwards Compatibility

To get around this problem, Sony has looked to the sky and found a solution in the cloud. Cloud computing, that is. Rather than trying to emulate the PS3 hardware natively on the PS4, Sony’s PlayStation Now service streams PS3 games over the Internet from custom-built PS3 servers installed in data centres across the world. These servers are effectively super-powered PS3s, but instead of hooking up to a regular TV, they stream the gameplay over the Internet to the PS4s and PCs of PlayStation Now subscribers.

As neat as it sounds, there are two big catches with PlayStation Now. The first catch is that it needs to stream HD video at a speed fast enough to hide the delay between player input and the action on screen. As a result, the streaming service requires a stable Internet connection of 5Mbps or more. Any time your Internet goes below that, you’re going to notice massive hiccups and interruptions in gameplay. Worse, if your connection drops at any point, you’ll be booted from your game completely and you’ll lose any progress since your last save.

What Services Work On The Ps4

Like the PS3 in its active service days, the PS4 is more than just a games console. It boasts tonnes of multimedia tools, apps, and streaming platforms such as Netflix, Sky, Amazon, and more.

I think Ive lost count of how many films my mate Josh has downloaded on his PS4 from the PlayStation Store, and its perfect for upscaling DVDs and playing Blu-Ray discs of your favourite films.

And, of course, it plays games as well. It wouldnt be a good PlayStation if it didnt!

Since the consoles birth in 2013, there have been a whole host of epic titles for gamers to sit in awe of. The controller should come with a drool catcher thats how good these graphics are.

How To Play Ps4 Game Discs On A Ps5

Since the PS5 is backward compatible with the PS4, PS4 games can be played on the new console.

To play a physical PS4 game disc on a PS5, simply insert the PS4 game disc into the PS5 console. You may be prompted to download an update. Then, select the game hub from your Games home page.

Quick tip: If you have a PS5 Digital Edition, you won’t be able to use physical game discs since it does not have a disc drive to read them.

More Ps4 Games Confirmed To Not Be Backwards Compatible On Ps5

UPDATE: Ubisoft has removed the post with the information below, citing inaccuracies. What is and isn’t accurate, Ubisoft doesn’t say, but presumably more information about these inaccuracies will be shared soon.

ORIGINAL: A few more games have joined the ranks of the PlayStation 4 titles that won’t be backwards compatible on the PlayStation 5. Ubisoft listed nine more products that won’t be backwards compatible on the new console with each of those titles not originally found on the list of 10 incompatible PlayStation 4 games Sony shared a while back. This makes for 19 total titles that won’t be backwards compatible on the PlayStation 4 which isn’t too bad considering how many games there are but is still a higher number than originally expected.

More than half of the games listed by Ubisoft are Assassin’s Creed titles, though one of them is a collection with a few others included. The PlayStation 4 games from Ubisoft that won’t work on the new console are Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles Trilogy Pack, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles India, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles China, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles Russia, Risk, Star Trek Bridge Crew, Werewolves Within, and Space Junkies.

Will The Ps5 Be Backwards Compatible

Yes, the PS5 WILL be backwards compatible – and with more games than we’d originally anticipated.

In an interview with The Washington Post , SIE CEO and President Jim Ryan confirmed that “99 per cent” of the “thousands” PS4 games that they’ve tested will run on PS5.

That does beg the question of what titles are included in the final 1%, of course.

Sony’s PlayStation 5 will only feature backwards compatibility with PS4 games – meaning that PS3, PS2 and PS1 titles will miss out.

This is due to it being “based in part on the PS4’s architecture.”

In the most recent PS5 tech deep dive, they revealed that they are aiming to make the top 100 PS4 games available for launch on the new console.

However, Sony have confirmed that 4000+ PS4 titles will be supported on the new system.

All is not lost as many PS3 games are available via PlayStation Now, PlayStation Plus or by purchasing them os the PSN Stire plus any PS1 and PS2 games that are included.
