How to replace a PlayStation Classic Controller USB Cable

The PlayStation Classic was a disaster from the moment early hands-on reviews criticized its game selection and design choices, and its launch did little to make anyone feel better about it. By the holiday season of 2018, the retro console was already being heavily discounted by retailers, who had plenty in stock.

How To Set Up A Playstation Classic

ByJames Bricknelllast updated 6 September 19

The PlayStation Classic is a mini version of the original grey PlayStation from the late 1990’s. It comes with 20 built-in games and two controllers for you and your family to indulge your nostalgia bones. Now you have one though you need to get it set up and ready to play.

Happily, the Classic is fairly simple to get going so we will take you through some simple steps with a little bit of advice on how to move forward once you are ready.

Playstation Classic Review: Best Left In The Past

Depending on how you look at it, Sonys either celebrating the original PlayStations near-25th anniversary with the PlayStation Classic or simply looking to join in on the cash grab Nintendo created by releasing miniaturised versions of retro consoles. After time with the PlayStation Classic, I believe its sadly more a case of the latter.

The PlayStation Classic is so similar to Nintendos NES and SNES Classic Minis that it comes with nearly all of the same flaws: a small selection of retro games output at a paltry 720p resolution, a power cable that doesnt come with a proper adapter to plug into a power socket and controller cords thatll barely make it to your coffee table, let alone your couch. Thankfully, the units controllers are USB which means you can use extenders to fix that issue, though itll be at an additional cost youll also have to dish out more cash for that power adapter if you cant plug the PlayStation Classic into a spare TV port or something.

The PlayStation Classic comes with two controllers at the very least, though theyre modeled after the PlayStations original controller design and not the far superior DualShock one that continues to prove itself today . The controllers are responsive enough, but an actual control stick makes all the difference I felt this the most playing through Resident Evil: Directors Cut and yearning for Resident Evil: Directors Cut DualShock Ver. instead.

The PS1 Classics struggles are compounded by a lack of upscaling beyond 720p, and the unavoidable fact that even its few classic games are from that pioneering 3D era that simply hasnt aged as well as the 16-bit generation before it or the 128-bit era after.

What’s Not In The Box

Playstation gift from classic PS controller cable cord ...

Has you can see from the above picture, and the Classic that is in your hand right now, there isn’t a lot of cables or anything else in the box. One thing you will have noticed straight away is the lack of power adapter. Don’t worry if you didn’t pick one before you bought the Classic if you own a modern smartphone then use its power adapter for now.

Later on, if you want to buy one, you can pick up this Anker 2 port wall plug from Amazon that will run it just great. For now, let’s just grab your smartphone adapter so you can get started playing today!

A wall adapter is required to use the PlayStation Classic since it doesn’t come with one in the box. This is the charger I bought for my PSC, and I pretty much always go for Anker products. They are reliable and cheap, the perfect combo.

One may also ask, does the PlayStation classic come with 2 controllers? Last week, Sony announced the PlayStation Classic, a mini console similar to the NES and SNES Classics that will give players the chance to play 20 pre-loaded PS1 games. PlayStation Classic comes bundled with two controllers, but they are original PlayStation controllers – the ones without analog sticks.

Also Know, is the PlayStation classic discontinued?

It was in the news quite a while ago that Sony had stopped producing these in light of how poorly they were selling. They’ll never formally announce discontinuing it – why bring up their massive failure – but it’s basically already happened, quietly.

How Long Are The Controller Cords For The Playstation Classic

So how long are the controller cords of the PlayStation Classic? According to Sony, the PlayStation Classics controller cords will be 1.5 meters in length. To put it in perspective, thats just slightly longer than the standard iPhone Lighting Cable, so its still pretty short for a comfortable living room setup.

Upon booting up the PlayStation Classic, you’re thrust into the home screen, which is reminiscent of the CD player on the original console. There’s a carousel with all of the games, as well as a virtual memory card that you can access. That works as you’d expect, but you can also create a suspend point anywhere in a game by hitting the reset button. I only wish the system let me create multiple suspend points — whenever you make a new one, you blow the last one away.

The most important part is the games, and that’s a bit of a mixed bag. Some titles, like Final Fantasy VII, are recreated well. As soon as I started it up, I couldn’t help but play until I defeated the first boss and struck a blow against the Shinra Corporation. Jumping Flash, which I never spent much time with before, was pretty fun and an intriguing window into early 3D platforming. And Metal Gear Solid still looks and sounds impressive, especially after slogging through the first stage of Syphon Filter .

But the emulation isn’t always consistent. Ridge Racer Type 4 has significant frame-rate dips and jitteriness that makes playing the game a huge headache. That’s a particular shame, since the original was a graphical milestone for the 32-bit era. There’s no longer any sense of speed, and I had a hard time steering without analog controls. I’m surprised Namco’s developers haven’t complained that Sony’s slipshod development turned one of the highlights of the PlayStation into an unplayable mess.

Subpar and missing games

I dont love all of the games in the library. Cool Boarders 2 plays like an awkward mess that has me pining for 1080 Snowboarding. The original Rayman is fine, but its nowhere near the best 2D game the system could have included, especially when Klonoa: Door to Phantomile isnt on the list. And as much as I love the recent Persona games, I dont think anyone needs to play through the series cumbersome first installment., especially when PlayStation RPG classics like The Legend of Dragoon and Suikoden II arent on the console.

Then you have other disappointing absences like Tony Hawks Pro Skater, Crash Bandicoot, Jet Moto, and Wipeout. Licensing may have played a part in keeping some of those games out , but I wish something could have been done to include them.

Also, sometimes Im disappointed by the game Sony chose to represent a series. Why put in Twisted Metal and Jumping Flash instead of their superior sequels?

Another short controller cord

You know what other idea Sony took from Nintendo? A frustratingly short controller cord. Look, I understand why the controllers arent wireless. Having that physical connection to the console is a small part of the retro charm . But I wish the cord would still reach from my TV to my couch. Im old now its not comfortable to sit on the floor in front of the TV.

Playstation Classic Review: A Disappointing Dose Of Nostalgia

Playstation Classic Controller Cord Replacement

The PlayStation Classic is a mistake. It’s a quick attempt by Sony to cash in on the micro-console trend, something Nintendo kicked off with the NES and SNES Classic. There’s definitely room to improve upon the idea of a tiny retro console, but Sony simply didn’t. What we’re left with is a machine that has an odd collection of games and a problematic controller and, perhaps most damning of all, betrays the memory of the original PlayStation.

Okay, maybe I’m being too dramatic. Younger gamers who didn’t grow up with the PlayStation might find something to enjoy. It gives them a reason to explore the first generation of 3D titles, even if some are too ugly and awkward to play for very long. And at $100, it’s an easy gift option. But it’s hard not to be disappointed.

The Best Playstation Classic Deals In March 2022

Limited stock of the retro console has bumped up the price

Sony unveiled the PlayStation Classic back in 2018 in an attempt to emulate the successes of Nintendo’s NES Classic Mini and SNES Classic Mini. All these years on, the plug and play mini-console is no longer manufactured so it’s difficult to find it in stock, let alone at a reduced price. That means any stores that still sell it have bumped up the price given the limited stock.

We had previously seen the console for as low as $40/£45 in some cases, but it’s now around double that price at most retailers. That makes it about the same as the launch price of the PlayStation Classic, which was $99.99 in the US, £89.99 in the UK and $149.99 in Australia. If you do still want to relive your gaming past, we’ve nevertheless gathered together where you can still buy the PlayStation Classic for the best prices below.

The PlayStation Classic comes with two replica controllers in the box, along with an HDMI cable and a USB cable. It needs a USB AC adapter for power though so you’ll need to get one of those separately or use the 5V charger from a phone or tablet.

It’ll be interesting to see if any remaining stock eventually gets discounted. For those of you looking for a console with a more modern touch, you’ll want to check out where to buy the PS5 or follow our PS5 restock live blog to ensure you’re the first to know when stock is available again.
