Ps Vr Tracking Problems
Its easy to spot a problem with tracking meaning the camera is not properly able to follow your headset or controllers. Look out for the following:
- The on-screen image/world is moving without any input from you.
- The on-screen hands or controller is moving around without any player input.
- Youre getting the Outside of Area message on-screen.
Firstly, double-check your set-up. Make sure all cables are plugged correctly. Now check all the lights on the headset are on. If you are in full VR mode all lights on the front and the back should be on. If only the lights at the back are on youre in Cinematic mode.
Now check that the PS camera isnt getting confused by other light sources, or not enough light. Other light sources include reflections in windows and other reflective surfaces such as mirrors, natural sunlight, TV screens, LEDs or lamps, and make sure the player isnt sitting directly under a big light source. Also check that there is other ambient light and youre not completely in the dark.
You can check reflections and other light sources by choosing the following options on the menu: Settings > Devices > PlayStation Camera > Adjust PlayStation Camera. You can take the lights and surfaces out of the frame, or move the camera itself to take them out of the frame.
Lighting And Camera Calibration
PS VR uses the visible light spectrum to track your Move controllers and headset. If you have bright lights in the camera view, it can negatively affect your tracking quality.
Keep it dim. For the best tracking, youll want a dimly lit room with the blinds closed as the PS VR setup manual explains.
Test for stray lights. Stand where your camera is and face the direction its looking. Do you see any small lights? Big lights? Open windows? If so, resolve this, cover them up, or shut them off. This is also stated in the PS VR setup manual.
Dont change your lighting situation. If you switch on/off lights in the middle of play, it may affect your tracking. Any time lighting changes significantly, the system should be able to adjust accordingly, but weve found that re-calibrating yor PS VR camera may help. See below!
Calibrate your camera. Follow these steps to recalibrate your PS VR camera:
- Navigate to the âSettingsâ tab in the PlayStation menu
- Move down to âDevicesâ

What If Canned Air Doesnt Work
If canned air doesnt do the trick, its time for some troubleshooting. Analog sticks can sometimes drift in specific games, so test another one to make sure its not just happening in one game. If it is just one game, try either updating the software or, if possible, adjusting the controllers dead zone settings. It may be that a simple dead zone tweak can get rid of the problem.
Its also possible that theres an intermittent connection between your PS4 and DualShock 4 controller. Fortunately, this is a simple fix. All you need to do is press and hold the reset button on the back of the controller. After that, plug it back into the system and sync it. That should fix any wireless connection problems.
If neither of these do the trick, then your controller likely needs a deep cleaning. Canned air just wont cut it youll need to take it apart and clean out the joystick connections. This is an advanced fix, since the controller has many small parts and delicate cables. Still, it only requires a few basic tools as well as household items such as cotton swabs. To learn more about how to disassemble and clean a DualShock 4, check out this YouTube video from the crew at How-FixIt.

Dealing With Steam Patrial Controller Support
reWASD can help you out even if the game from Steam has partial controller support: you can unmap all the controller buttons, then assign keyboard keys to them, and use the gamepad fully. Even though sometimes it’s enough to add Hardware mapping, the KB& M to the controller style is still the most popular in our community. That’s why Steam partial controller support is no longer a problem at all!
