Carefully Pry Off The Potentiometers

How To Fix Controller Drift PS4! PS4 Analog Stick Drift Easy Fix!

Flip over the PCB to pry the potentiometer from the main analog stick housing. The module should come off easily. Dont attempt to force it out if its stuck, because that can lift a pad. A tiny sliver of solder might be holding back one of the leads. Heating the offending pad with the soldering iron should release it.

Repeat this procedure for another potentiometer. Skip to Step 13 if you only need to replace the potentiometers.

Can I Fix Stick Drift

Its called controller drift, or analog stick drift, because one or both thumbsticks will drift, or move, in an undesired direction even when you arent touching them. To fix Xbox One controller drift, you need to take the controller apart and repair or replace one or more components related to the analog sticks.

What Is Thumbstick Drift

Your Xbox One controller has two analog sticks, or joysticks, that allow you to do a variety of things while you play. Usually, they work exactly how theyre supposed to. But when analog stick drift occurs, objects youre controlling will move across the screen even when youre not touching any buttons.

Why Is Stick Drift So Common

8 Cause: Good Old Wear And Tear

Naturally, the most common reason why controllers run into drift, sooner or later, is because they are prone to wear and tear. The joystick component, responsible for the longevity of your controller and preventing drift, has an operating life of about 2 million input cycles.

My Left Analog Stick Moves Down Alone What Should I Do

my left analog stick moves down alone? what should I do?

control already open but not found the problem

by tomincevic94

well, after looking everywhere, i came across this. didnt think thered be any way THIS is what would fix it. it did though. perfectly. hope more people see this.

I found this topic after having my controller keep slowly moving upwards all the time, but thought the idea of just buying a new controller, a bit too excessive.

So I played around with various other options and finally fixed it by moving the stick in different positions and blowing as hard as I could around the ball at the base of the controller stick, to remove any dust etc which may of got inside.

It works perfectly now.

You can use the ps4 web browser to know when it’s fixed, by moving the cursor in different directions and then see if it carry’s on moving by itself or not

Update: I also found it useful to get a thin piece of card and slide it down between then start to rotate the controller stick, as this removes other gunk that blowing wont always get rid off.

Replace The Analog Sticks

Someone with good knowledge and proper tools can also replace the analog sticks by themselves. However, that would require a soldering iron and other tools as well.

Unless you are an expert and have all the necessary tools to do it, I would suggest that you just buy a new controller instead. It would be much cheaper and less hectic. Not to mention, tampering with the controllers will also terminate their warranty.

What If Canned Air Doesnt Work

If canned air doesnt do the trick, its time for some troubleshooting. Analog sticks can sometimes drift in specific games, so test another one to make sure its not just happening in one game. If it is just one game, try either updating the software or, if possible, adjusting the controllers dead zone settings. It may be that a simple dead zone tweak can get rid of the problem.

Its also possible that theres an intermittent connection between your PS4 and DualShock 4 controller. Fortunately, this is a simple fix. All you need to do is press and hold the reset button on the back of the controller. After that, plug it back into the system and sync it. That should fix any wireless connection problems.

If neither of these do the trick, then your controller likely needs a deep cleaning. Canned air just wont cut it youll need to take it apart and clean out the joystick connections. This is an advanced fix, since the controller has many small parts and delicate cables. Still, it only requires a few basic tools as well as household items such as cotton swabs. As this step involves making some changes to the Windows registry it is important that before starting, you have a Restore Point set. If you arent 100% sure how to create a restore point, open the start menu, type Restore, then select Create a Restore Point when it shows on the list. From the new window that appears click Create in the bottom right section of the screen, then follow the instructions given by Windows. Once you have successfully made a restore point you can continue with the steps below.

To start, press Windows Key + X and select Run from the list. In the Run text box type regedit and press Enter, you will now see the Windows Registry open in front of you. Using the left pane navigation area go to the following location:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\MediaProperties\PrivateProperties\Joystick\OEM\VID_0079& PID_0006

Note: The final location might differ a little depending on your device so you may need to check the other VID_ folders until you find a game controller name you recognize within.

Now inside the VID_0079& PID_0006 folder , you will see a file called OEMName. Double-click on this file and enter the name of your controller into the Value Data box, exactly the same as it is listed on your computer. For example: Controller for Xbox One controllers. If you are having trouble locating the name or cant find it, you can try entering Logitech Cordless RumblePad 2 Into the box.

How To Replace The Shockers On Your Dualshock Controller

  • Remove the analog sticks by pulling outward on them very carefully.
  • Use a desoldering pump to remove the solder that connects the shockers to the DualShock controller. Do this by heating the solder with a soldering iron while sucking the solder with the desoldering pump.
  • Add solder flux to a solder wick.
  • Add solder flux to the pieces you’ve removed the solder from.
  • Use your iron and your wick together to maneuver around the pieces and clean it up a bit more.
  • Wipe it down with a paper towel.
  • Use a hot air gun to gently blow hot air, in bursts, onto the pieces until they release. Give the shocker a gentle pull while you do this. Make sure you don’t let the circuit board get too hot or pull too hard on the shocker.
  • Allow the circuit board to cool and install the new shocker. If the holes to your board aren’t open, use your desoldering pump and soldering iron at the same time to help remove the excess solder.
  • First, put a layer of solder flux on the pieces.
  • Second, apply a layer of solder to each piece.
  • Wipe off the circuit board with a paper towel.
  • Flip the circuit board back over and put it back in place in the DualShock controller.
  • Replace the screw in the center of the circuit board.
  • Use your tweezers to install the red ribbon back into the top of the circuit board.
  • Replace the battery holder onto the circuit board. .
  • Replace the battery in the battery holder and re-connect the red and black wires to the circuit board.
  • Replace the screws.

How Do You Fix Analog Stick Drift On The Ps4

In most cases, you can fix analog stick drift on your PS4 controller without opening it up or sending it off to be repaired. The best method is to give it a good clean using a can of compressed air. So once youve got this piece of equipment, follow these simple steps:

  • Disconnect your controller and turn it off. You can do this by pressing the PS button for 10-20 seconds.
  • Push your left analog stick to the side and blow your compressed air into the base. Dont get too close- the nozzle should be at least three inches from the controller.
  • Give your right analog stick the same treatment.
  • Now try and get your sticks moving smoothly. Click them a few times , then move them as far as they can go in all directions. This should help dislodge any debris that the pressurized air didnt manage to get rid of.
  • Hopefully your controller will now be working just fine. But if it isnt, it could be that some parts are worn out, and you need a replacement controller.

Even if your PS4 controller is working fine, its a good idea to give it a good clean with pressurized air about once a month. This will help prevent any build-up of grime, and make it last longer. Its also good for hygiene!

    How To Succeed At Desoldering

We recommend using a desoldering pump rather than desoldering wick/braid because the latter is more appropriate for SMD soldering work. The braided copper significantly increases the thermal mass of the joint, which leads to longer dwell times and consequently increased risk of PCB delamination and/or lifted pads.

The copper braid relies on capillary action to gradually wick away solder. The desoldering pump, however, instantaneously sucks molten solder out of the joint.

The process of soldering and desoldering becomes impossible when your components and/or the tips suffer from oxidation. The hot soldering iron tip also begins to oxidize when exposed to air. The oxide layer acts as an insulator and prevents the tip from heating the joints. Adding extra flux on the joints chemically scrubs them clean.

Removing oxidation involves coating the tip with fresh solder and then wiping it off in either the brass tip cleaner or a slightly moist sponge. The refreshed tip will appear shiny and conduct heat better. Repeat this process periodically to maintain thermal efficiency.

You Might Not Need To Desolder Everything

The Alps Alpine branded analog sticks used in DualShock 4 wireless controllers can be split into three discrete components for the context of this repair: the main housing and two potentiometers. The former contains a spring-loaded joystick constrained along a two-axis gimbal mechanism.

The loss of spring tension in this gimbal assembly is one of the two primary contributors of controller drift. The joystick will not return to the center position as the springs deteriorate over time. This can be verified by checking for play in the mechanism.

Excessive play allows the joystick to be moved more than a few degrees off-axis before you can feel return pressure from the springs. Controller drift occurs when this axial play increases beyond the preset dead-zone threshold of the sensors.

These sensors, or potentiometers to be precise, bring us to the remaining two physically distinct pieces of the analog stick assembly. Moving the joysticks rotates the two potentiometers, which record joystick movement along the X and Y axes. These components are the culprits in an overwhelming majority cases of controller drift.

Potentiometers translate rotational motion into voltage signals by sliding one electrically conductive piece of metal across another one. This high-friction affair eventually wears out these sensors until they output faulty signals, which manifest as controller drift.

If you have just recently purchased a game controller to use on your Computer and the right analog stick isnt working, dont stress! Your controller almost certainly isnt broken or faulty. Its just a super annoying bug in Windows and Steam that causes the right analog stick to function as individual buttons rather than a directional axis. Its also possible the joystick doesn’t even work at all. Whichever issue your controller has, this guide will show you how to get your right analog stick working again, regardless of your controller’s manufacturer.

I recently discovered this fault after purchasing Shadows of Mordor on Steam with the intent of using my Xbox One controller to play it. As soon as I launched the game and changed the in-game options over to Gamepad/Controller I noticed the right analog stick wasnt rotating the view. Instead, two directions would function as buttons instead of a directional axis. The same thing happened in The Witcher and . After searching for hours I managed to piece together two fixes. They may work individually for you or you may need to use both combined, just work your way through the guide from top to bottom, checking after each to see.

On this new page select Controller from the left-hand menu and choose General Controller Settings from the middle of the window.

Steam will now redirect you to a new page where you can make adjustments to your controller. There are 6 options on this page, leave all of them unticked. I have tested Xbox and Generic controllers using the boxes ticked and both controllers had no limited or no function from the right analog stick. As for PS4 controllers, I cannot comment, however, with two out of three controller options not working properly I’d assume there could be a bug with it too.

With all the boxes unticked, check to see if your controller works in one or more of your Steam games. If it doesnt you will need to follow the steps in the next section.
