Given the ‘Plug and Play’ feature of a modern HDD, connecting your PS4’s external hard drive to the PS5 via its USB port at the back of the console will allow you to immediately play the PS4 games stored on the device.

You can also download any owned PS4 games direct to the HDD through the PS5.

The next-gen console also includes a feature to automatically install any PS4 games to the HDD. This ensures the PS5’s internal 825 GB SSD can remain available for next-gen games that require the SSD to run.

To enable this feature, simply go to the PS5’s settings and select Storage. Here, scroll down to Extended Storage and click on the option ‘Install PS4 Games to USB Extended Storage’.

To make sure everyone’s on the same page, we’re going to start from scratch.

To move content between your PS4’s system and extended storage, you’re going to need a PS4 that you’ve updated to version 4.50 or higher and an external hard drive that’s between 250GB and 8TB, and uses USB 3.0 or higher and a USB-A connection.

You can check what software version your PS4 has: just head to your PS4’s Settings, select System, and then System Information. It should say next to System Software.

We’ve also got a guide outlining the best external hard drives for the PS4, so be sure to check that out if you’re undecided on which external hard drive to buy.

It’s also important to note that you can only move your PS4 games and not your saved data. Nor can you save or move any video clips, screenshots, or themes onto your extended storage device.

If youre like most people, you have a lot of games on your PlayStation 4. And if youre like most people, you dont have enough storage space to keep them all. Thats why many PS4 owners are looking for ways to use multiple hard drives on their consoles.

On a PS4, you can use only one external drive out of all the connected drives for playing games at a time. You will have to switch off the current drive in order to play games from the other one.

Lets understand the process of using multiple hard drives on PS4 in the sections below.

How To Transfer Games From One External Hard Drive To Another Ps4

  • Connect the first external hard drive to your PS4 using the USB cable.
  • Go to Settings > Devices > Storage Devices.
  • Select the first external hard drive and press the Options button on your controller.
  • Select Copy to USB Storage Device and press the X button on your controller.
  • The game will be copied to the external hard drive and will be available to play from there.

Can You Copy Ps4 Games To External Hard Drive

Head to the PS4 home screen and select System. Scroll down to Storage and select System Storage. Select Applications and youll see a list of all your installed games. Your PS4 will transfer your games from to your external drive and automatically delete the old versions from your console once complete.

    Use An External Storage Drive

Move PS4 games to External Hard drive (PS5 Preparation!)

The next option, which is my favorite, is to use an external hard drive. You may already have one connected to your PS4 for storing extra games. If not, it’s easy to format a drive for use on both consoles.

Plug your drive into the PS4, then navigate to Settings> Devices> USB Storage Devices.

Select your drive and then choose Format As Extended Storage. Select Next, then Format, and Confirm.

To start transferring your games, back out to the settings menu, select Storage, and when it’s done calculating, pick System Storage.

Follow the prompts to select the games you want to copy to your drive and select Move to Extended Storage.

Before you unplug the drive, go back to USB storage devices and select Stop Using This External Storage to safely unplug your drive.

Plug the drive into the PS5. Go to Settings> Storage> External Storage> Games and Apps. You’ll be able to see the games you just moved over.

Now you have a choice: Either move your PS4 games onto your PS5 or you can leave them on the extended storage drive.

The PS5 lets you play your PS4 games right from the external drive, so that’s where i’m planning to keep them. This will save space on your PS5’s too-small internal drive for PS5 games, which can’t be played from the external storage drive.

But once those bugs get worked out, and until we get the option to upgrade the internal drives on the PS5, I think storing all the PS4 games on the external drive is a great solution.

Is It Possible To Use An External Ssd With My Ps4

Yes, you may connect an external SSD to your PS4. However, keep in mind that the PS4 does not include a SATA port, so if your SSD doesnt have a USB connection, youll need to purchase a SATA-to-USB adapter.

Additionally, you may need to format your external SSD before using it with your PS4. To do this, connect your external SSD to your computer and open up Disk Management. Then, right-click on the drive and select Format.

File format should be set to exFAT or FAT32, and the Allocation Unit Size should be set to Default. Click OK to format your external SSD.

Once your external SSD is formatted, you can connect it to your PS4.

If you have already updated your PS5 to the latest firmware version, the PS5 system allows you now to transfer PS5 and PS4 games to an external disk in order to free up part of the PS5s limited internal storage space. Youll miss out on the super-fast SDD loading, but if you want to play more than a few games at once, youll probably welcome the extra capacity.

Install Games And Date To The Ps5 From A Ps4 Disc

Many PS4 discs are compatible with the PS5, and can be installed on the new system the same way they always have been. Just pop in your PS4 disc to install the game.

You’re going to need the disc version of the PS5 rather than the digital version to use this method. But odds are you already had this in mind when you decided which system to buy.

One thing to note here: If you have an external drive attached, there’s a default setting that will automatically install PS4 games to the external storage. That’s a win for me, but you can turn that option off in the settings if it’s not what you want.
