Kingdom Hearts. A game series started on PS2, that managed to fit in eight titles and multiple collections across consoles and portables alike before Kingdom Hearts III even launches on PS4 and Xbox One. The multiple non-numbered entries since Kingdom Hearts II have been a source of confusion for many and a seemingly impenetrable wall for those who are curious to check out the series and see what the fuss is all about.
Well, this is about to change. For the few select people who take the time to read this article, at least. The Kingdom Hearts series can be divided into what I consider essential, important, and unimportant titles, and the collections easily allow you to play the most important games as long as you own either a PS3 or PS4. Ready to dive into the series that managed to make a fusion of Disney and Final Fantasy work?

The game that started it all. Three kids, Sora, Kaiki, and Riku, live in totally-not-Japan, playing together on a mostly deserted island known as Destiny Island in their free time. They dream of seeing what lies beyond the boundaries of their tiny world and are building a raft to make this dream come true. After calamity strikes the island, however, they wont able to journey together.

This is another that we would say is for the completionists out there only. There are things to like about Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded, but in all honesty, it is one game that you can move past without missing too much of value. And again, if you just want to be up on everything to do with the narrative, this one also has a movie edit of all the cutscenes that you can sit back and watch at your leisure.

Kingdom Hearts Unchained / Union / Back Cover
Here is where things get even more complicated! By the way, that is not an X, that is pronounced as key as in the letter Chi.
This is a browser/mobile game that takes place before everything thus far as a prologue to the entire series.
It also has a companion film, Back Cover, that introduces several important characters that are crucial to Kingdom Hearts III and beyond.
The game and companion film explains the origin of Keyblade wielders, the Ancient Keyblade War, and gives insight to characters we have already met!
Pc Gamers Can Finally Play Kingdom Hearts On March 30
19 years after the first game launched, Square Enix is launching 11 Kingdon Hearts ‘experiences’ on PC.
Square Enix launched the first Kingdom Hearts game for the PlayStation 2 back on March 28, 2002. 19 years later, we’re finally getting the option to play not one, but 11 Kingdom Hearts “experiences” on PC.
Square Enix announced that a huge selection of Kingdom Hearts games will be hitting the Epic Games Store exclusively on March 30. The 11 experiences the Japanese developer/publisher references are spread across the following series entries:

In a word, yes, Kingdom Hearts III can absolutely be the first entry in the series you play, but if you want to have a better understanding of what’s going on, you’re going to need to do some light research. Here’s a couple of steps you should take before, and during, play if you want to get your head wrapped round what’s happening in Kingdom Hearts III.
Kingdom Hearts Iii + Remind
The conclusion to what the creator of the series, Tetsuya Nomura, has called the Xhanaort Sega. This story sees Sora and his friends confront the protagonist of the entire series in a thrilling conclusion. However, upon beating the game you soon realize this isnt the end and the story is continued away later with the DLC to Kingdom Hearts III titles ReMind. In the DLC we not only get to see the battle from our friends perspectives but also get some more bread crumbs as to where the series might go next.

Kingdom Hearts III may have arrived more than a decade after the last numbered entry to the series, but thankfully we didnt have to wait nearly that long for the next chapter in Soras story. The DLC expansion Re Mind is out now on PlayStation 4.
As Re Mind is a follow-up to Kingdom Hearts IIIs ending, you will need to already own the game as a physical or digital purchase. Then youll need a cleared save file meaning that you have to have beaten the final boss and completed the main story. Once you have both those things squared away, install the DLC from the PlayStation Store, download the latest game updates, and youll be ready to play.

How To Play The Kingdom Hearts Games
Before we explain how to play the games in order, youll first need to know how to actually play them at all. Its hard to think of any other series that has managed to span a stranger series of consoles over the past 20 years than Kingdom Hearts, so gathering everything you need has been tough in the past.
Thankfully, for the most part, you can rely on the Kingdom Hearts 1.5 Remix, 2.5 Remix, 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue to cover almost all of the older games – as these collections combine nine adventures into three simple packages on Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.
On top of that, youll also need console games Kingdom Hearts 3 and Kingdom Hearts Melody of Memories, as well as the mobile games Kingdom Hearts Union X and Kingdom Hearts Dark Road to round out the list.
However, with this method, you wont actually be able to play every Kingdom Hearts game. In the 1.5 and 2.5 Remixes, the Nintendo DS games Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and Kingdom Hearts Re: Coded feature as cinematic cutscene-only experiences that just recap the story of the games.
Additionally, some titles such as Kingdom Hearts Union X and Kingdom Hearts Dark Road are no longer playable because their online servers have been shut down. However, offline story-only versions of the games will still let you experience the stories – with Dark Road adding its final chapter later this year. Kingdom Hearts 3d: Dream Drop Distance
This title first launched on the Nintendo 3DS and features Sora and Riku and their quest to become key masters. Fans of the franchise refer to this as one of the stranger entries in the Kingdom Hearts franchise, but it is worth playing as a lot of what you will see here is extremely relevant when you get to the last game in the series.

Kingdom Hearts 0: Birth By Sleep A Fragmentary Passage
While Dream Drop Distance sets up the clash to come, A Fragmentary Passage sets up the starting points. This short entry follows Aqua during her exile in the Realm of Darkness before the start of the Kingdom Hearts. Easily beaten in a few hours, the story ends by setting up where all the main characters begin in Kingdom Hearts III. While its still unknown if Riku and Aqua will be playable in Kingdom Hearts III, we do at least know they will have large roles to play.
Can I Skip Re Coded
Re: coded is honestly 100% skippable. The gameplay is just boring compared to 358/2 days, and the plot honestly adds nothing of importance to the story. But if you absolutely gotta know what happens theres the cutscenes available on the 1.5 + 2.5 collection on ps4, and likely many videos summarizing it on youtube.

Kingdom Hearts: Re: Coded
Before arriving at Kingdom Hearts III there are a few more books to read, to put it in some way. Kingdom Hearts: Re: coded, original mobile phone title and later recreated on Nintendo DS, arrives through 2.5 ReMIX with all its remastered cinematics. Here you can leave the command at the table and simply enjoy a kind of movie that will help you to chain with the events of the impending new episode. Its duration is only 3 hours.
Kingdom Hearts: Melody Of Memory
Taking place moments after the conclusion of ReMind Melody of Memory gives an even greater look at the future of Kingdom Hearts. Changing the style of the game from action RPG to combat rhythm game was an immense deviation in the Kingdom Hearts franchise, but a welcome one. See what Soras friends are up in this small story update.

If you want to play the Kingdom Hearts series in its full chronological order this is the list you need. It takes you from the series earliest moments – depicting the great Keyblade War that reshaped the entire universe into what we see in later games – all the way through to the end of the Dark Seeker Saga – which concluded in Kingdom Hearts 3.
