Many popular PS1, PS2, or PS3 games were re-releasedsometimes even remasteredfor the PlayStation 4. Since those reboots are now PS4 games, they do indeed work with the PS5.
For example, The Last of Us originally came out on the PS3 and this version doesn’t work on the PS5. But The Last of Us Remastered came out on the PS4, so that copy absolutely works on the PS5.
The same goes for PS1 and PS2 classics such as Max Payne, Jak and Daxter, the original GTA trilogy, and many more, all of which saw PS4 re-releases that now work on the PS5.

A Sony support page previously listed 10 games that were incompatible with the PS4. In a welcome twist, this has now been stripped back to just seven – meaning Sony presumably found a way to get three of them running on the next-gen console.
Notably, most of the below include VR content. Thankfully, there aren’t any major AAA titles. There are several Assassin’s Creed games that use VR. Reports claim that while they can boot up on PS5, they encounter a barrage of bugs, which would explain why they’ve been pulled.
One name has stuck out more than others though, until earlier this year, Joe’s Diner was on the list. The underrated 2015 game tasks you with playing a waiter who has to keep order in a diner that’s been built on an Indian burial ground. Think Poltergeist meets Mystic Pizza.

Alongside a sterling roster of launch titles, the PS5 will also run a number of top PS4 games you may have otherwise missed.
The powerful machine is “99 per cent backwards compatible” with PS4 games, according to PlayStation boss Jim Ryan.
Sony has assured fans they can play an “overwhelming majority” of PS4’s 4,000+ games at launch.
That means blockbuster titles like The Last of Us 2, Grand Theft Auto 5 and Fortnite are available to play from day one.
You’re free to either download them if they’re linked to your PlayStation account, or stick in your old disc.
Unfortunately for gamers, Sony hasn’t published a confirmed list of backwards compatible games yet.
However, we do have a list of the handful of games that DON’T work on your PS5.

Can You Play Ps4 Games On Ps5
According to Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment around 99% of the current PS4 games are supported on PS5. Initially, we knew that the top 100 PS4 games based on sales and other numbers were supported on PS5.
However, it has now been revealed that almost all PS4 games can be played on a PS5. This is a huge step for Sony, as the community has always favoured backwards compatibility. Moreover, Jim Ryan has also confirmed that Sony will be supporting the PS4 for at least 4 years more.
Quote from The Washington Post confirming backwards compatibility,
Ryan also said that of the thousands of games tested for PS4 backwards compatibility, 99 percent can be played on the next console.

So Ps5 Or Xbox Series X: Who Takes The Cake In Backwards Compatibility
The winner will have to be the Series X in this regard. This is because they switched to using Hyper-V and Virtual Machines in 2016. Hyper-V allows you to run a software version of a computer. This is called a Virtual Machine.
To know more about this, check out Microsofts take on it by . Hyper-V basically allows the Xbox 360 and Xbox One games to run on their respective consoles OS. This is applied to any hardware that the developers choose.
Another nifty feature that the Microsoft Team adopted was mipmap modding. A mipmap is an additional copy of a texture in smaller resolution. Every mipmap is 1/4th the resolution of its predecessor mipmap.
A game engine can use mipmaps and apply them to a model where the given resolution fits best. This helps with performance as smaller resolution mipmaps are less resource-heavy on the engine. It also results in improved anti-aliasing more edges are smoothed over with mipmaps.
Sony, on the other hand, makes use of Native Execution. This means that they make programs that are designed to run with a particular processor and its set of instructions only. This makes it vulnerable to hardware changes as we have seen in the case of backward compatibility from the PS5 to PS4.
Will The Ps5 Be Backwards Compatible
Yes, the PS5 WILL be backwards compatible – and with more games than we’d originally anticipated.
In an interview with The Washington Post , SIE CEO and President Jim Ryan confirmed that “99 per cent” of the “thousands” PS4 games that they’ve tested will run on PS5.
That does beg the question of what titles are included in the final 1%, of course.
Sony’s PlayStation 5 will only feature backwards compatibility with PS4 games – meaning that PS3, PS2 and PS1 titles will miss out.
This is due to it being “based in part on the PS4’s architecture.”
In the most recent PS5 tech deep dive, they revealed that they are aiming to make the top 100 PS4 games available for launch on the new console.
However, Sony have confirmed that 4000+ PS4 titles will be supported on the new system.
All is not lost as many PS3 games are available via PlayStation Now, PlayStation Plus or by purchasing them os the PSN Stire plus any PS1 and PS2 games that are included.
You can also play some older classics that have been remastered for the current generation of consoles – two that stand out are Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and the Spyro Reignited Trilogy.
