Playstation State Of Play Event Possibly Coming Next Week With Surprise Announcement

PlayStation State of Play February 2021 Livestream

We might be getting a State of Play very soon.

By Md Armughanuddin

Sony is all set for a new State of Play event, and despite rumors suggesting that it has been delayed, it seems like we might end up getting this month as well.

Its been a year since the PlayStation 5 was launched, but we havent got any big exclusives as such apart from Demons Souls and Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart. Some of Sonys biggest IPs are still missing from the fray, including fan-favorites such as God of War and Horizon Forbidden West.

A while ago, it was leaked that Horizon Forbidden West has been delayed to 2022. The game was slated to release this year itself, but will now be arriving in the first quarter of 2022 as per reports. This was quite disappointing news for a lot of fans, as they were eagerly looking forward to playing it this year itself.

It seems like Sony is gearing up for another State of Play event, and there could be something exciting coming up there.

What Is Sony’s Playstation State Of Play

The “State of Play” title seems to riff on something akin to the State of the Union, but it’s a digital presentation that Sony conducts several times a year to offer major announcements related upcoming games and, in some cases, consoles. The October 2020 event offered an extensive look at the PlayStation 5 a month before its release. Before that, an focuses on games like Godfall and Hood: Outlaws & Legends.

They ultimately serve a similar function to Nintendo Directs.

Which Playstation Studios Games Can We Expect To See

If the rumors are true, then what can we expect from the next State of Play? The most recent one heavily featured Horizon: Forbidden West. There, they showed off the new environments and traversal features, alongside a lengthy combat clip. Horizon: Forbidden West is also the next upcoming full release for PlayStation studios. Taking that into account, we can safely expect to see more of it.

The recently announced Ghost of Tsushima: Directors Cut is also another likely candidate. It will feature graphical improvements for the PS5 version, and an expanded zone and story featuring Iki Island. This upgraded version of the game is set to release on August 20. If any State of Play is going to happen this July, it will most likely be part of the show.

XboxEra.com founder and industry insider Shpeshal_Nick also hinted at the new God of War possibly being shown off:

Im being told well see our first gameplay of the new God of War at Sonys show too. Will be exciting to see.

Nick

Details have been sparse on the sequel, so any new information will surely excite fans. For now, all we know is that it will also be available on PS4 and that it was delayed to 2022. Oh, and of course, the ominous words Ragnarök is coming from the teaser trailer.

What Was Revealed At The Last Sony State Of Play

Sony’s last State of Play took place on July 8 and focused on Deathloop, giving us an even more in-depth look at gameplay and what players will be faced with when it launches. We also saw several indies too, with trailers for Sifu and Moss 2.

The State of Play before that on May 27 and focused solely on Horizon Forbidden West. The showcase featured 14 minutes of gameplay from the highly-anticipated sequel and, while we didn’t get a release date, we did get our best look at some of Aloy’s new abilities and some of the new machines she’ll be facing off against. You can check out the gameplay trailer above.

When Is The Playstation Showcase

The PlayStation Showcase takes place tonight, Thursday 9 September at the following times:

  • 9pm BST

PlayStation

This is likely the announcement of a software update, which has been in beta testing. If rolled out, this would add M.2 SSD support, 3D audio support for speakers built into TVs and some changes to the dashboard.

Other suspected announcements include trailers for the likes of Horizon Forbidden West, Deathloop and maybe even Hogwarts Legacy.

One thing there won’t be is any updates for is the new PSVR headset, which has already been detailed at a developer summit. If we’re lucky though, we could get some other hardware announcements – perhaps a tease at a Slim or Pro version of the console? Here’s to hoping.

Indie Game Updates And Reveals

The PvE and PvP battle royale fighter Hunters Arena is coming to the PS4 and PS5 for PlayStation Plus members next month from August 3 to September 6.

Playstation State Of Play Set For Next Week

Sony will share more about the future of PS5 in the next State of Play presentation.

When Sony once again decided not to have a presence at E3 2021, many suspected that the company would be holding its own independent event by the end of the summer. That theory has proven to be true, as Sony has announced a PlayStation State of Play for next week, where they will share updates from PlayStation Studios and talk about the future of the PS5.

Sony announced the next State of Play with a post to the PlayStation Blog earlier this morning. The next State of Play presentation will take place on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at 1 p.m. PT/4 p.m. ET. Here, we can expect to get some big announcements from Sony and its stable of developers.

Save the date!

PlayStation

The Showcase will weigh in at around 40 minutes and include updates from PlayStation Studios and some of the industrys most imaginative developers, for games releasing this holiday and beyond. And stick around after the presentation to get more updates from some of the studio teams featured in the Showcase.

With a run-time set for 40 minutes, we can expect to get a lot of information at the upcoming State of Play. That said, Sony has not named any specific games that will be at the event, as they have with previous showcases. The company also confirmed in the blog post that there will be no mention of the upcoming PS5 PSVR at the event.

When Is The Next Sony State Of Play

Sony has not yet confirmed when its next State of Play event will take place and we’d be surprised if it came soon. Many suspected that it would put out an event around Gamescom 2021 but instead Sony decided to go out on its own with a September showcase for the PS5 games headed our way in 2022 and beyond.

This shouldn’t have been a surprise as the last State of Play was on July 8 2021, a date completely separate from either of the huge E3 2021 or Summer Game Fest events. It looks like Sony has its own plan and won’t blindly follow the rest of the gaming industry on when to make announcements.

So far this year we’ve seen State of Plays take place on February 25, April 29, and May 27. This sporadic, yet frequent release schedule indicates that we might get one more State of Play in what remains of 2021, but we wouldn’t be shocked if the next didn’t land until 2022.

What Can We Expect From The Next Sony State Of Play

Neue " State of Play"

Because we don’t know when the State of Play will be taking place, we also can’t predict exactly what we will see. Highly anticipated titles like Horizon Forbidden West, God of War: Ragnarok and Gran Turismo 7 are sure to steal the spotlight in future showcases, but we’ll have to wait a little longer to know for sure.

Nearer their release dates, we’ll probably see State of Plays for Forspoken and too.

The last State of Play on July 8 focussed on smaller games, like Deathloop and indie titles. This shows that blockbusters aren’t the only games that will headline the event. This means that other PS5 exclusives like Stray and Ghostwire: Tokyo could get their own State of Play showcase too.

We’ve also been expecting to hear more about Sony’s PSVR 2 at the next State of Play event. However, it looks like that won’t be happening at the Thursday, September 9, PS5 Showcase 2021, as Sony has made it clear the next-gen PSVR won’t be making an appearance.

State Of Play August 2020 Ps5 Event New Ps5 Backwards Compatibility Details

After a bunch of confusing messaging regarding how PS5 backwards compatibility works with PS4 games, Sony needs to not only clear the air from a communications point of view, but also provide folks with some actual PS4 games running in an enhanced form on PS5. Our money is on top PS4 exclusive title The Last of Us Part 2 being showcased at higher resolution and frame rate. Sadly, we also think that Sony will draw a negative line under PS1, PS2 and PS3 backwards compatibility on PS5 also thanks to PlayStation Now.

Genshin Impact Still Refuses To Increase Anniversary Rewards Despite Fan Outcry

Sony just seems pretty uncomfortable talking about its holiday 2021 slate of games, as the biggest story is likely to be a delay of Horizon into 2022, which I mean, is acceptable to fans, but not exactly good news. Elsewhere, we have Deathloop, Kena Bridge of Spirits and the Ghost of Tsushima Iki Island expansion. Its not nothing, but its not Microsofts Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite, either.

As Ive said before, Sony is in the fortunate position of being able to go almost completely radio silent and have that have no effect on PS5 sales at all. High demand and mass shortages continue to have the PS5 selling out almost instantly whenever it appears, something that will continue to happen into next year. It really doesnt matter if Horizon lands this year or next, as the PS5 will sell either way.

It is weird, however, how quiet Sony is being. They missed E3 and they have not done anything like a significant showcase since then, even though we are now on the verge of the holiday release season, and its already been reported their biggest game is probably delayed out of that window. One way or another, we should be hearing something from them soon, and I hope they consider going back to more regular, substantive updates. And hey, maybe think about going back to E3 next year.

What Could We See

We have no clue what we will see yet but we could see something on the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut. Outside of this, we are awaiting more details on Horizon: Forbidden West, God of War: Ragnarok.

Deathloop recently received a State of Play so we likely won’t see that but it could be mentioned. Releasing just under two weeks after that is Kena: Bridge of Spirits, something we would like to see more from.

Death Stranding: Directors Cut is also just a few weeks away so, hopefully, we will see some more information on this. We will update here as soon as we figure out what we will see in the next State of Play.
