An email which has been posted online seems to confirm earlier reports that players subscribed to PlayStation Plus at a discount may have to pay the discount back to Sony in order to upgrade to PS Plus Extra or Premium.

The revamped PlayStation Plus service launched in much of Asia this week, and is due to roll out in Japan, the Americas, Europe and Australia in June.

Its since been claimed by some Asian players that anyone who purchased PS Plus subscriptions at a discounted price, including those who chose to stack subscriptions before the option was disabled earlier this month, is being charged extra to upgrade to a different PS Plus tier, wiping out any previous savings they made buying reduced cost memberships.

    Earlier in the month, it was reported that Sony was discontinuing its traditional digital PS Plus vouchers. These allowed you to purchase one month, three month, or 12 month memberships from third-party retailers, which you could then redeem on your account in order to extend your subscription. Occasionally, these would be discounted.

    On the official PlayStation website, it was directing customers towards PS Store credit, which you can obviously use to purchase subscription time. Now, with the service available in Europe, its released some new wallet top-up denominations specifically for its revamped PS Plus tiers. Major UK retailers like Shop To and now allow you to purchase £84 of PS Store credit, which is the cost of PS Plus Extra for a year.

    There are also rebranded options available in the US, like $110, which is the price of PS Plus Extra and tax. Were not convinced this format is as clean as the old option, where you just bought how much subscription time you wanted and didnt need to worry about PS Store credit, but we suppose with three tiers on offer, this is ultimately more manageable for retail displays.

    Anyway, thats the situation right now: PS Plus specific vouchers are out, but rebranded PS Store wallet top-ups are in.
